Makalei Golf Club

The course is working to build its new club house so the golf shop and bathrooms are operating out of large mobile trailers. Staff is very friendly and the starter was great about providing key information about the course and how to play particularly holes. The course was a very good condition and surrounding forest that fronts most every fairway is lush and impenetrable (lost balls) if you hit errant shots. There's a significant amount of terrain elevation change between teeing areas to greens on most holes.

Overall great value and very fun course.

A fun round in the mountainous terrain. Challenging slopes, rock walls and peacocks make this course stand out. Tough to maintain a good score but, very entertaining and demanding imagination and creativity.

The old clubhouse is gone (we played there last 2 yrs. ago), no food or beverage services. The course itself is in very poor condition, except the greens,which were acceptable, but there is a lot of pig-related damage to the fairways and near the greens! The grass on the fairways was in terrible condition, and a lot of areas had not been mowed lately. We have played this course many times in the past and have never seen it this bad, so sad!

Huge elevation changes throughout course. Faced with uneven lies regularly. A challenging track that needs to be played a few times to know where to place shots. Fairways are sketchy, greens roll nice but show wear. Lots of great views. Lots of peacocks

Don’t waste a vacation day at this course. It feels like a farmer cut a path through his cow pasture and called it a golf course. You will lose balls hit in the fairway due to uncut wild grass and pig damage. The greens have pig damage on most. On the mainland, this course would be about $25 to play. It was worse than almost all muni courses. A small trailer for a pro shop and outhouses throughout. Very disappointing for a course in Hawaii

Course conditions are awful. Pace of play was 5 hours plus. Inattentive staff.

Forcing everyone early backs this course up and creates the slow play, many were giving up and leaving the course because of poor manGement

Great course on an excellent weather day and I was impressed by all of the staff interactions. Got paired up with a couple of regulars and they helped navigate me around the course, pointing out lines and where ideally not to miss. Lots of elevation and so severe downhill, and uphill, holes and so that made it interesting and fun. Greens were excellent and actually had less break than I accounted for. Tees and fairways were fine, but overall had bare spots in places but my play wasn't really affected. Trailer for a pro shop and so light on the amenities, but that is of low priority for me. Good guide book as well and scorecard had pin locations for 1/2/3 sections. Would definitely play again. Hot deal with GolfNow was excellent but even with regular rates this is a good deal on the island.
