Hapuna Golf Course stretches along the beautiful Kohala coastline before rising to over 700 feet above sea level. The snow-topped Mauna Kea volcano serves as a dramatic backdrop and there are seemingly endless views of the Pacific. Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay collaborated to create a visually stunning links course that utilizes the natural contours of the landscape and silky fescue grasses. The design team has received praise for not only the challenge of the design but also for how seamlessly it blends into the existing environment. Palmer incorporated several risk-reward opportunities, especially with the par 5s, the14th is a good example. There are many ways to play this hole, which features a large ravine on the right and a wide, but shallow green. Long hitters can reach the green in two but short hitters prefer two shots and a par 3.

Take My Picture- you won’t see me there again

This course seems to be the ignored step child compared to the main course at Mauna Kea.

Greens were great. That is the only good thing I can say.

The pro shop is small with with very little desirable merchandise. The carts are old and we’ll beyond their life expectancy.

Almost all of the fairways are spotty with a lot of bare areas and dead patches. The bunkers were well below average at best. It didn’t look like they had been raked in weeks. The Nenes were at least at home in the standing water in a few of them!

My wife and I played as a twosome, which seemed to be the popular thing on this day, as we followed a twosome and saw a couple more. Two ridiculously slow guys were in front of us and continued to hit multiple balls on practically every shot. There was not a Marshall or course assistant to be seen all day, leaving us to finally skip ahead late on the back nine. 4 hours to play 18 holes is very frustrating.

Upon finally finishing, there were no employees except one still working. Nobody in the cart area, nobody in the pro shop…at 3:00 on a Saturday.

Totally disappointed as this used to be a great tract in a great location…but it has fallen so far it isn’t even funny.

Avoid playing here.

Great layout, good mix of holes, difficult to good birdie opportunities. Condition were very good. Able to play 3 hours after a torrential downpour.

Hapuna golf course

Nice course and layout. Played 18 holes in 2 hrs. Only thing is when you go to Hapuna golf course website. Look at golf photos. They show holes along ocean front. There are zero holes along the ocean. Very misleading. Extremely disappointed. Won’t play again

Fun course

It played a little short the day I went out. I played from the regular tees, but it played more like 5500yds, than 6000yds. When a par 5 is just over 400 yards, then we've got a problem. That being said, I still had to make approach shots and putts I was disappointed to shoot 80 with as short as it was playing.

The greens were fair and the view is beautiful from anywhere. This is one of the nicest courses on the big island plus the starter was super nice.

I will come back and play it again. I actually prefer it over Mauna Kea mostly because of the cost.

Overall great course

The good: course layout is a bit different in an exciting way compared to some of the other local options. Pace of play was excellent. Value/price was reasonable (we had a hot deal). Greens were fast and rolled well.

The bad: some burnt out spots mainly in the fairways, but less than some of the other courses nearby.

Excellent - highly recommended

I always play Hapuna when we visit the Big Island - 2 or 3 times a year. Although the course can occasionally be a bit dry, it's consistently in very good shape and the greens are fantastic. I love the layout which can be manageable from the middle tees, or really hard from the backs...especially if the wind picks up. Pro-shop is well stocked and all the staff are friendly and helpful. Hapuna can be a real bargain (for Hawaii) with a Hot Deal rate.

Beautiful course, views, lots of hills up and down……. and Windy!

We got to play this beautiful course with a great hot deal. We started off on the driving range where you get free balls hitting into at least a 25 mile an hour wind which gave us concern for the day. You must play with a cart because it is a long walk up and down between holes, the fairways were in great shape so were the greens. They are tricky with lots of minor undulations. On about half the holes the wind was very slight and then one other holes, rolling hard and direction changed often. We started playing at about 11 AM and finished by 2:30. Oh things moved along just fine. In fact, it wouldn’t be a bad thing. If you played slow, the views are so beautiful! 18 is a real tricky finishing par four with a blind drive you don’t want to hit far and green sits atop a very high and steep mound.

Get a chin strap for your hat.

Fun course, good condition, beautiful views. Wish the wind didn’t blow my ball off the tee and hat off my head.
