Makena Beach & Golf Resort

       About
Opened in 1993, Makena Golf Course in Maui's southern region is a championship Robert Trent Jones Jr. design. The course navigates around Hawaiian lava rock walls, natural streams and gullies with views of the Pacific Ocean and mountains at many points. There are four sets of tees, the championship set playing to 7,038 yards. Makena's signature 14th hole is a par 5 that plays 620 yards long, second longest in Hawaii, but downhill the whole way.

Beautiful scenery
Really a beautifully laid out course. Sand traps could use better quality sand. Cart GPS is very good and helpful. More flexibility in when course closes would be appreciated; i.e., if someone has two holes to play and has to return cart, leaves bad taste. Ranger needs to nudge slower players.
Spectacular course
I played Makena while visting with my family in March and just had the best time. The views, especially on the back nine, were just stunning with some great holes spanning lava rock crevasses. I played the Kapalua Plantation course a few years ago which was equally beautiful but at nearly three times the price was not nearly the value.
Great discounted value for a beautiful course!
I booked this 1:30 tee time at golf-now for a very good price. Included a GPS cart, some range balls and some cold water in the cart cooler. The course was in very nice shape overall. Pace of play was a bit slow, but you'll get that sometimes at a resort in Hawaii. Staff was friendly and helpful. The course was on the challenging side for me (20 handicap) but quite playable. Some good targeting required, but not overly unforgivable. Some spectacular views of Molokini, Kaho'olawe, Makena, whales breaching. If you can get a discounted tee time (under $100), it's a very good deal! I will definitely be playing there on my next trip.
lots of challenging fun
It was a busy day on the course but done in 4 hours. Trent Jones challenge and reward but playable for all in the group. Staff some of the best we came across on the island, great pratice faucility. All in all great time.
Could be a great course.
The course has all of the qualtities to be a great course but it just needs a little more tender loving care. We played Wailea Emerald the next day. For relatively the same money, it was no comparison. The Emerald was in better shape, the service level was higher, and the experience was worth the money.
Best value on Maui
Good, challenging course, well maintained, but nearly every hole offers stunning views.
Great course, great experience
This course is well worth the $99 green fee i paid. I had to pay $30 for my wife to ride in the cart, which i thought was a bit much. The staff was very friendly, and helpful. The gps in the cart was better than any course I have played, you don't need your own hand held device as it has layup distances. The tees and greens were in great shape. The fairways had some soft spots, but overall a 9 out of 10 for quality of golf. I had to skip hole 10 to pass 2 groups that would not let me play through, but once i skipped them, I finished in 3.5 hours. The pro shop has the apparel that I love, Puma and Travis Mathews. Good restaurant, friendly staff there as well. I would definitely come back and play Makena.
Terrific features and fantastic views.
Greens tuff. Pace of play was fantastic. Terrific photo ops for my rider.
GPS not properly calibrated, cart would stop when on concrete cart path or 60 yards from green. Pro shop gave lame excuses.
Great views and course is in very nice condition. Slow play is a problem.
beautiful course
i would rate this course above torry pines south. it has similar ocean views but the views are visible from more holes
Best Value on Maui, Great Golf Course
I played the course 3 times between Nov. 18-29, 2012. I also played 5 other courses during my visit and Makena is the Best Value. The course is better than maintained, but I wouldn't call it pristine. They are putting work into the course, it can only get better. The views are spectacular and they treat you excellent! A must play on maui.
A must play on Maui
We had a great experience at Makena. The course in lovely with stunning ocean views. The course has a good amount of challenge and some very challeenging and interesting holes. Hole 6 and 12 are spectacular as are many of the ocean view holes. Maui is haveing a draught and the fairways are a little dry, although green. The greens are is perfect condition and very challenging. I am and up and down or two putt player and I had several 3 putts as the speed and break are challenging to read. Best of all we rarely saw another player and Makena feels very much like a private club. The staff is very friendly and engaging. We arrived early and were ready to go so they sent us out early.
They have a special price if you return within 5 days and we will play again on our last day here.
We loved Makena.
Great service, great views
Makena is a great course and pretty good value for Maui. The service from the staff was top notch. Water bottles provided in carts as well as marshall handing out cookies while on course. The cold towel after the round was a great touch. Hole 6,7,8 are quite the trio.
Wonderful vistas from many holes.
From at least half the holes, one gets fabulous views of the Pacific Ocean and the nearby islands. Greens were fast, and with the severe slope on many of them, a 3 putt is not uncommon. Many interesting and challenging holes. The "flyover" feature on the GPS is a great feature!
Awesome course!
This course has it all. Friendly staff, great conditions and decent pace of play. The layout is awesome -- challenging but not ridiculous.
Excellent course
1st time played. Will play again. Great location at the end of the penninsula. Weather was great.
Challenging course with tricky greens and great views.
Played early morning on Nov 21, 2012. Fairways and tee boxes were excellent, some greens had sandy bare spots but most were excellent. Staff was excellent, very friendly. Pace of play was good, got bunched up a couple of times, but finished in just over 4hrs. Several work crews were on the course which tells me they are investing to make it even better. Sand traps are difficult but in great condition. Other golfers said good things about the course. The trees and lava fields add more challenge, and the greens are well defended.
This course has beautiful vistas.
I enjoyed playing Makena, It offered affordability compared to other championship courses in the area. The course was fun to play and in reasonable shape.
Great course. Beautiful views. Super staff. Not too crowded.
Great course. Beautiful views. Not too crowded. Great pace.
Great views and golf holes
Many great golf holes that requires all the clubs in your bag. Much improved since I played here 2 years ago.
