Pukalani Country Club has a unique location at the 1,100-foot elevation of the famous Mount Haleakala, an extinct volcano whose name means “House of the Rising Sun.” The dramatic elevation offers breathtaking views that span the West Maui Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. The golf course features wide, undulating fairways and fast, sloped greens. The gently rolling terrain can cause some tricky uneven lies. There are trees and well placed bunkers scattered throughout to provide further challenge. Pukalani Country Club has a unique feature on the par-3 third hole. The hole gives golfers the options of hitting to one of two very different greens, one which requires a tee shot over a tree-filled gully and another that requires a shot beyond a cliff to a pal tree-lined green.

Rustic but lovely

Golf course itself is in great condition, with great views. Loved the layout. The “clubhouse” is sort of a prefab affair but it works. The food at the small restaurant was pretty good and the staff was friendly. The only thing that was bad was the driving range. Really rough. Nice rental clubs. The whole experience is kind of quirky in a way but it’s fun and cool unless you are stuck on snobby resort golf.

We knew there was a good chance of rain but we got in 7.5 holes before the deluge started. The rain and flooding made the news, that’s how bad it was. Wished we could have gotten a discount for next time.

Not a good value

The only thing that makes it worth your time and money is the restaurant.

They are replacing their greens one at a time. The other 17 looked fine to me. Where they need to spend their money is the riding carts. They are old and in very poor condition. Mine had trouble braking.

The sand traps are not sand. They are packed hard dirt.

The views are nice, but not worth the money.

Great course

I was surprised to see a hot deal for $26.99 given what I paid for the other courses we played and was equally surprised at how great the experience was. The staff were friendly, the course was excellent, the sun was shining, the views were spectacular, the layout was challenging, and we got paired with a great couple. If I only had time for one game in Maui, this would be the course I would play.

Some may rate the course lower because of the worksite trailer clubhouse, but don't let that get to you. It was just fine. You gotta play this course.
