Great conditions already
Beautiful sunny day, had to play. Staff very friendly. Course surprisingly great shape. Keep up the good work.
Round on a sunny fall day
The course is picturesque and was in good condition. The fairways nice and soft, the greens were a tad slow (I think speed of 8 or 9). We were unfortunately stuck behind a sluggish 4 ball and was a bit frustrating with the wait times else it was। Great round. I say unfortunately cause otherwise the course was almost empty
Nice Course, Bad Greens
Nice course, good value and fun. But the greens were in awful condition.
Perfect
I played golf today. Everything was perfect.
No complaints.
Strongly recommend my friends to play here.
Counter agent was excellent.
Classic yet far from old. Great greens!
Was happy to play Sportsman's for the first time with our golf group. None of them recall playing this course (we're usually in the DuPage county area) and all were very happy with the course in general.
Despite rain the night before, the course drained off extremely well and the greens were running fast and true. In fact, all in our group raved about the greens after the round. For this time of year, you couldn't expect much better.
We thought the course might be short (by the scorecard numbers) and you'll find this at many classic, older courses, but then while playing, we were surprised to find a number of very long and challenging par 4s, all legitimate par 3s that require precision, and a couple of par 5s that challenge your skill if not your power.
It is apparent that where this course may lack in some distance here and there, it definitely makes up for that with appropriate bunker placement and fast, undulating greens. None of our guys avoided every bunker and all of us were finding them more often than we typically do. I find that a credit to a well-though-out design.
I heard staff mentioning that there were course changes coming soon but he didn't mention specifics. I can't imagine what changes they are looking for because nothing really felt out of place or lacking but I can understand why people would like to see an update from time to time.
Whether this existing design or another, we look forward to playing again.
good round.
pretty good round at sportsmans in Northbrook today. Course layout is great and a good challange. fairways were in great condition and greens were rolling faat. Only problem was pace of play, my tee time was at 7am so I thought I would beat the busy rush but course was jam packed. Round was 4 and a half hours. To long for me, last few holes i just wanted to get over with as fast as possible. still a great course and a fun round overall.
Perfect if not for unfortunate Staff
I have been playing this course for about 10 years now. The course is always really well kept, especially after severe weather. I would love to give this course 5 stars but the inhospitable attitude i continually receive from the entire staff has unfortunately compressed my ability to enjoy the game as much as I should, especially with such a nice course. The prices are a bit high, but the with location along with course quality, it is understandable. So, if you're not planning on continuous rounds here, I would suggest it. Otherwise, find a more friendly atmosphere to play.
First Time - Very pleasant surprise
Course was a pleasant surprise as I don’t play north very often but thought I knew all the courses in area. Last minute out of geographic necessity. The on course staff could have been the shining stars. Everyone from pro shop to greenskeepers checked on us to make sure all was good. Course was in great shape for a muni/park district. Challenging enough, but also plenty forgiving, stayed low 80’s. Very fair price. B+ only because nobody’s perfect.
Sporty Sportsman’s
Enjoyable early morning round at Sportsman’s CC. As first time visitors to Chicago area, we were looking forward to experiencing a mature parkland course and Sportman’s didn’t disappoint. Nice layout. Green complexes were good, however many unrepaired ball marks ... strange for an early morning round. That said, I’d be pleased to play again.
Great early times available
Great condition. Played early 6 am on Sunday. Finished in 3.5 hours !!
Can’t figure out why this course needs renovation which is scheduled soon, too bad.
I suspect they will create more hazards and water run off areas which is the trend, these old parkland tracts are disappearing.
Fair challenge
Good old fashioned venue. Not too hard; not too easy. A fair test of your golf skills,
Not good
This was the 4th and last time I’ve played this course this year. My father was in from out of town, so I took him and my brother out for a round after Father’s Day. My 6 yr old son also came with. After filling out a waiver form for him to ride on the cart, I was informed that he wouldn’t be able to ride on the cart, because there was a 4th member to our foursome that grabbed a time online, and that we I had to share a cart with the other golfer, and that my 6 yr old son could walk. They didn’t want to give him another cart, because they would only allow 2 carts per foursome. After arguing The staff recognized that the other golfer went early and that it didn’t matter. So they were just rude just to be.
After that annoyance, the greens were TERRIBLE. They had just been aerated and not properly cleaned. It was like trying to putt on a obstacle course. The fairways were in good shape though, and the course is a fun course, that I previously enjoyed playing.
Wide open spaces
First time playing this course. This course if very forgiving with wide fairways and good sized greens with minimal break. This course would fit average golfers perfectly. The greens, fairways and tee boxes were well maintained. GPS, a range, separate putting and chipping greens to warm up. This was worth every penny at just $38 @ 5:30 w/ cart. I would come back.
Enjoyable Experience
Sportsman's Classic 18 is a true traditional golf course with trees, well-placed bunkers, and challenging greens. Don't let the short total distance fool you as there are a number of full-sized par 4's in excess of, or almost 400 yards. Fairways are well manicured with good roll if you hit straight. If not, rough is a decent height and trees come into play. Greens are not easy to read and speed is medium with typical public course problem of unprepared ball marks.
well maintained
compared to florida courses, looks green and beautiful
Greens in bad shape.
I have played this course over 50 times in the last 10 years. This was the worst I have ever seen the greens. There were aeration holes the size of quarters that made putting like a game of Plinko. The rest of the course was in excellent shape. I will not be coming back until the greens are in better shape.
