Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

Some things never change...
I want this course to be a good experience, but it just never is! The greens were so soft that a pitch shot would make a ball mark on the greens. Therefore, greens were just full of marks and imperfections that made putting very difficult. The pace of play was again just terrible. It usually starts on #11 and it never gets better. That was again the case yesterday. We waited every shot on holes #11 through 18. It ruins the experience. One tee box (#12) was soppy wet, I guess from a sprinkler being left on, we played in the afternoon with no rain the prior day.
Hole direction and cart paths were bad
Course was in fair shape. Some rough was very long and some around the greens were really bad 6 plus inches high. Cart paths had very rough spots and in some places were non existant. Direction between holes had no signs and was not intuitive. Lost time looking for next hole twice because of no direction. Didn't even identify cart return all could use easy improvement.
Beveraage Cart attendant was friendly and came aroung regular. Fairways were mostly good and greens were fair. Nobody was fixing ball marks ahead of us.
Horribly Wet Chewed up Greens & Cups
Refer to my 6/24/18 review for other comments. Pace of play today amazingly was not an issue....on the Labor Day holiday no less....finished in slightly over 4 hours. My comments that follow probably answer why pace was so good. Greens are ridiculously over watered (spike marks/ball marks/scuffs everywhere) and with the new flag in rule at least 1/2 the cups were damaged. Cups obviously hadn't been moved since previous day. So bad we were laughing by back nine. Crap shoot and a mine field of imprinted spikes marks from 3 feet?? Weather has been wonderful last few weeks and other courses played greens are just wonderful. Settler's has a pretty routing but golfers don't take care of the place - huge divots everywhere the list goes on. How about getting some divot mix on the carts? Course continues to go downhill over the last couple of years. Sand traps are not maintained at all. Just throw your ball out of them. The cart I got in was a sloppy uncleaned mess from previous players and they still don't have drinking water out on course. At least 6 flags placed on top of mounds/ridges and/or "tucked" into a side of green it wasn't pleasant. I like challenges/design the course provides and will reluctantly recommend....however it's not worth over $30....at any time. Beverages are ridiculously overpriced as well for the caliber of course. Practice putting green is stupid and they should at least consider building a new one representative of the course greens.
Nice local course
Course layout is solid, with all the elevation changes it makes for a fun round. Unfortunately the course conditions are awful. They cut the grass.....and that's about it. Some of the damage isn't there fault, but it's far below average compared to other local courses. Staff has always been nice, but the bar/pro shop area is very limited. Overall, I'll play here again when I find a deal.
Fowl
In addition to the fairways being in pretty rough shape, many of the greens had excessive ball marks (I’m positive golfers understand how bad form it is to not repair theirs), and the goose litter was disgusting and everywhere, especially #18.
It’s too bad really because it could be a great course. Just not worth the yuck factor considering all the wonderful courses around town.
Slow play
Five hours to play 18 holes of golf is just too long .
Greatocal course
Wavey greens and lots of elevation changes make this a fun coarse
Want to like it
I want to like it I do I do.
It is a cool layout ,Most of the holes can be good or very good.
But the property is old and beat up.
Bunkers are rocky and have concrete in them instead of sand. well feels like concrete.
Fairways always have water and soggy. Drainage is a bad word on this course. and the water smells don't touch it ever. comes of the hill.
Cart paths are so bad it is better to drive thru the woods.
It needs a overhaul and upgrade bad.
The staff is always friendly and I have never had a issue with them.
Just with so many course in this price range I can find one in better condition.
I keep hoping for some dollars to be spent.
Outstanding golf course.
The course is well taken good care. You’ll enjoy every hole played . Youll always want to come back and play. I will make sure my brothers from other states will play it guaranteed. We will see you soon again.
The mood was set from the start
They have no concept of spacing out tee times. When we arrived we were 20 mins early, 4:03 start time. Rolled up to the starter at 4:05 and he complained that we were late. He then let two walk ups tee off in front of us behind a foursome that had on experienced golfers in their group. On average we waited about 15 minutes in between each hole. I ended up playing number 8 twice cause i did not want to wait anymore.
Not the best twilight golf experience.
Worth the Challenge
Reserved today’s game thru GolfNow.com and got excellent value for the great condition of the golf course. The staff were very professional and friendly with some encouraging words before tee off. Not too many golfers playing today probably due to the hot and humid condition which favored the usual slow play of our group. I appreciate the rangers not being around the fairways to urge our group for faster play, hence we only have the challenges of the course to deal with. We had fun despite the mixed results of our games. We’ll be back to play this course again.
