Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

Fun and challenging
I had not played this course in a few years so wanted to give it another try. I had a great time on a windy but nice summer day. The course was in good shape and the staff was very friendly. There were a few slow groups ahead of me so the starter let me skip a few holes to get ahead of them and I was allowed to play the holes I skipped at the end of my round. Much appreciated! I would recommend the course to anyone looking for a fun and challenging layout!
Not bad but small improvements needed
Really want to like this course more than I did today but there were some basics that just made it not great. The greens and fairways are all in great shape. Tee boxes are well maintained as well. The challenges: 1st, while I like the “Links” Style, there is some much needed trimming near the tee boxes that would allow you to actually see what you’re hitting at. (#4 Blue tees, #16 blue tees as examples) I hit down on the group in front of us at least once because their carts were obscured from view from the tee box on a par 3. Secondly, it’s a course with minimal shade on the front and portions of the back. There are no water coolers on the course anywhere. With a heat index of 103, just a few water coolers and cups would have gone a long way to make the round more enjoyable rather than having to hope the cart girl would cruise by and I’d have to buy water.
Golf Visions spoils another course
This course has always offered a challenge with nice tee options and generally, overall good conditions tee to green. (Prior to Golf Visions management)
Much like other Golf Visions managed courses, conditions have turned to far below "good".
One player with us lost a ball off of the first tee in piles of grass clippings, just off of the fairway.
The greens are horribly slow, inconsistent and many require repairs. While a course cannot oversee all players; given the recent weather we have had, even a low quality superintendent and crew with daily course maintanence should provide much better conditions.
My back yard is in better shape than these greens!
Just like at other GV courses, the greens are terrible and can help to spoil a good round.
Waste of time and money!
ISSUES - No drinking water bad rangering
See my review dated 7/16/17 for tips and other comments. Course was a tad wet this day but in really decent shape given all of the recent rains. Sick and tired of Settler's lack of amenities - GET SOME WATER JUGS OUT ON THE COURSE!! CLEAN YOUR CARTS! Redo the practice putting green so it's more representative of the other greens and at least have some nets do you can take a few warm up swings. Routing doesn't come back to the clubhouse until after 13 and even then that's not convenient. Having to depend on the nurse service for water or really overpriced beverages is hit and miss. Pace of play can be hit and miss too. Today thank god was 4.5 hours....usually 5.5 hours with play slowing to a crawl on the back nine. Broke 80 but my day was ruined by a stupid ranger who decided he wanted to watch my approach shot on the 12th hole directly in my line of sight behind the green. We were well on pace. I tried to wave him off or at least get him to move out my line. Then when I addressed the ball he then slightly moved his cart. I backed off tried to wave him off again addressed my ball and guess what he slightly moved again right as I was about to hit. Thanks ranger rick. I had to back off again. My playing partners actually yelled at him when he drove off. What an idiot.
I like the track overall but having to deal with idiots who work at the place means I won't be back this season. Recommended only because the routing and generally decent conditions make up for significant issues. $30 value. Play when the tee sheet is light.
Things that need to improve.
They had the dirtiest carts I ever rode in. 12 carts at the curb and all were disgusting. There was no water anywhere on the course and only one washroom.
Generally a very nice layout to this course. Many fine holes....but there are some blind shots and issues where the foursome teeing off is not able to see tha the foursome in front is still in the fairway. the course should provide something to notify the foursome it’s ok to hit. also, water stations on both 9’s seem very reasonable and responsible. Lastly, the biggest issue was the pace of play. The front nine seemed reasonable at just over 2 hrs, but the back nine ea terrible. I hope to give it another try where our experience will be better.

Very challenging course and in very good shape. I will be playing there again!!
One of the best value courses in west Chicago suburbs
It may not be the best course, but if you're looking for a good value play in the west suburbs, check out Settler's Hill. Built on a landfill, it tends to get pretty wet in the spring and after extended rain, but if you can avoid that, you'll be treated to a fun layout.
The par 3s aren't long, even from the tips (the 7th is the longest at 205) but they offer great variety. The 4th, 7th, and 16th are all played from an elevated tee box that really makes you really think about club selection, especially if the wind is blowing as it usually is.
The course eases you into the round with a pair of short par 4s - the opening hole plays just 337 from the tips and is downhill with little trouble ahead. But the third hole is a par 4 that plays 471 with a somewhat blind landing area.
The par-5 6th and 11th are where the course gets really interesting. 6 is treelined, but gives ample landing area, provided you don't carry it too far left to cut down the line on your 2nd shot. A good drive sets you up to go for the green in two, but you must carry a Scottish-like bern in front of the green. 11 features an intimidating tee shot featuring a forced carry over water to a landing area lined by trees on both sides. You're then forced to lay up to a downhill fairway or try to carry a creek to a raised green that slopes back to front.
I've been fairly critical of most Chicagoland public courses because I feel they are all the same; not much variety. But Settler's Hill doesn't fall into that category. It's a fun track to play with a good mix of tough holes and holes you can take advantage of. With a weekday walking rate of $38, twilight rate of $27, and weekend walking rate of $46.50, it's hard to beat.

91 degrees.......no water
There are 0 water buckets on this course so if its hot your spending 3 to 8 bucks everytime the cart girl comes just to stay cool. Rain has all the bunkers destroyed but love this course.
Favorite in the area
I was home visiting for Memorial Day weekend and played while I was in town. The course was in great shape; fairways, greens and tee boxes. Staff was very friendly but the pace of play was very slow and no water coolers on the course. I will always recommend this course, the layout and elevation changes are very unique to the area and makes for a fun day of golf.
Once is probably enough
Golf here a few times a year but this year, probably our one and only time. Many soggy holes and if it were just water...but, some areas just too smelly to enjoy and there is nothing but an outhouse until you finish 13 so in other words, no acceptable facilities on the course. Starter and ranger were excellent, very friendly, engaging. Great customer service.
Average
Weather was very hot, it was a holiday weekend but yet it seemed the grass had not been mowed in a while. Balls lost in the first cut just off the fairway....not cool.
Not the best time i’ve had
Me and my two friends played on the course today... as on the day before I was checking the availability to see if I could walk in and play 18 as there was very little people there or even cars in the parking lot alone. Asked if there was any openings and got denied. So today me and my friends walk in to play 18 and got accepted in this time, i mean im just saying the friendliness of the staff the past couple of days has been really poor and I golf at this course to at least a few times a year. But the pace of play today was entirely too slow, as we hit the four hour mark on hole 13. The greens don’t really seem like they been taken care of as of late as the ball bounces more than it rolls, and the fairways were still soaked and marshy from the rain days before, the tee boxes have so many divots where it’s almost impossible now to tee off without having your ball or feet in some weird position or area. Feel like they really let the place go, and wasn’t exactly a fair value for our money for sure.
Unique, Challenging, Fun.
great experience. challenging course. A rough way to start 2018.
Course layout was very unique, and extremely challenging.
Outstanding course finally got some warm weather pin placements were a bit unreasonable but too bad so sad it was great to be out there
Not good for the money
No water on course
The course was not in the best condition
Greens and tee boxes were sub par at best
This course is not very good nice compared to what is around
