Stonewolf Golf Club
About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

View Tee Box #1 Photo submitted by Sundayfun on 10/21/2012
Always Great
Course is in prestine condition with tightly cut fairways and well manicured greens. This course is definitly my fsvorite local course and I would highly reccomend it to anyone.
Will be back
Tees, fairways, and greens all in great shape and for a great price. Will be returning to play.
Love it!!!!
Great challenging course, will force you to make desicisons on layup or go for it. Make sure you know your carry distance on this course and which way the greens slope because your ball if misplaced will roll right off the green then your in trouble because the green are surronded by bunkers. Take advantage of their fly over. Worth the price if this is to much for you try Clinton Hill. Havnt played Far Oaks yet but i think is a much better course then the overrated Gateway National but Ping to Callaway compared to Spencer T.
Food deal
They had a tournament that caused the place of play to come to a slow crawl but had a go back to #1 so we were still done in 4hrs. Fun layout!
Ask about greens before you book
The greens were in pretty good shape, but it was obvious they were fighting not to lose them. The greens were very slow and there were alot of temporary fans being used on the greens. Other than this the course was in good shape. The bunkers need to be redone, more dirt than sand. Pace of play was excellent, three hours on a thursday afternoon.
Number of golfers
I feel like there were too many players on course yesterday, it took well over 4 hours to play. Other than that things were pretty nice.
Beatiful Course, Buit The First Few Holes Have Blind Shots!
It was a very clean and scenic course. We played during "Cart Path Only" conditions, which means we did ALOT of walking to our golf balls out in the fairways. Greens and fairways were in awesome shape after all of the heavy rains. Green speed was consistent on all 18 holes! The first few holes had some blind shots to the fairway or green. Once you got past the 5th hole, everything was visible after that. The layout was unique. A few of the holes were so secluded that we only saw the hole we were on (trees). A few holes were next to houses. A good mix. Many fairways are narrow, or appear narrow. If you can keep the ball straight, you will score well. Pace of play was slow, probably due to cart path only. Took us almost 5 hours for 18. Enjoyed the rolling hills - Not a course you will walk!
Toughest first four holes in the area!
Toughest first four holes in the area! Chris and his staff do a wonderful job making you feel like you're a member. Brian and his staff keep the course in outstanding shape. Pay attention to the yardage markers off the key box on the first four holes or you can put up some big numbers. Definitely a shot makers course. This is not a course to break out the big stick and spray it or you will quickly find yourself in either a hazard, bunker, or four holes or you can put up some big numbers. Definitely a shot makers course. This is not a course to break out the big stick and if you spray it you will quickly find yourself in either a hazard, bunker, or OB! Love the WOLF!
Beautiful
I enjoyed this course a lot! It was a little wet from the storms the previous evening but that honestly was my only complaint. And I don't even hold it against them. Nice signage, cart paths were in fairly good condition, tee boxes and greens looks well taken care of.
A bit challenging on some holes but it only makes you better! I'll definitely be back!
Good challenging course
The tee boxes were in good shape. The cart path is all concrete. The fairways were almost all in good shape. There were spots here and there that needed attention, but overall in good shape. Good variety of hole layouts. Made for a fun round.
Great course
One of the nicest courses in the area. Very tough, sand protecting the greens. Can't wait to go back.
Somewhat over priced.
Got green fee for $35 on a hot deal. Fairways were in poor shape. Greens were nice though. The majority of the Bunkers were washed out, but I did see the grounds crew working on it. Would have been worth $20 tops.
Wonderful course!
This course was in great condition and the staff was friendly. I look forward to playing here again soon!
very challenging
Great time lot's of different holes to play very good shape
Great layout
Zoyza fairways were ok as it is not warm enough to grow turf
Greens were in great shape-rolled and cut today. True and relatively fast
Check in was very fast! Staff did good!
Played in four hours but jumped around to do so-no problem! Very enjoyable round !
eXCEELENT VIEW
THE VIEW OF COURSE S FANTASTIC. THe couse condition is OK.
Stonewolf
Nice course, well kept. Enjoyed playing there. It can be priced too high at times.
Exceptionally Designed, Great Challenge
Preface this review with the fact it was 35* and overcast with a slight breeze the day after New Year's. There was a group teeing off right before us and another starting 20 min later so the staff (very friendly btw) let us start on 10, so we didn't run into anyone all day! Obviously since it is winter it was cart path only, but that was the only thing that slowed pace. Also, since it was winter I won't focus on course condition, though it was very much playable. Now, the best part for last...what an absolute gem of a design...drastic elevation changes, forced carries, undulating greens, strategically placed/deep bunkers, water challenges all in a magnificently beautiful setting! I can't wait to play it again in season!!
Great variety
I wasn't sure which tees to play, so I picked the middle (blue). I will move back a set when I play there again, but it was nice not feeling beat up when I was finished. The course was in good shape despite recent heavy rain. The greens were slower than I expected, but with the multiple levels that was probably a good thing. Lots of elevation change throughout made the club selection on the tee very important. I really enjoyed the variety of holes. The short par 4's make for a fun round. I play very fast when I'm alone. Two groups let me play through with no trouble, and was able to play in 2 1/2 hours before it got dark. I will definitely play it again.
Great layout; not so great conditioning
The layout and routing are really interesting and often challenging. Greens where very good to excellent; fairways were good, but I have played better zoysia. Some of the traps were horrible; hard packed; bottomed out next to french drains. Signs that indicated to me that staffing of maintenance might be less than needed.
Would probably play again because of how interesting the layout is, but certainly would expect better conditions in traps (since there are so many).
