About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

Golfer Reviews
Great course, bad experience
It was too hot to play, which, when coupled with a wet course that meant carts had to stay on the paths and a lack of drinking water on the course, made it a bad overall experience. The course is a fun course and moderately challenging during better conditions, but the staff could have provided more watering holes on the course. We never even saw a refreshment cart until we drove off the course.
Wet day
The course, tee boxes and greens were in perfrect shape. We played on a rainey day and it had rained hard the previous two days so the bunkers were in poor shape. But looking at the course I doubt that is the case normally.
Great course, horrible staff
This course was one of the most beautiful and fun courses I've ever played. Cliff shots, accessible par 5s, and fun course to ride in the cart up and down hills. But when it comes to the staff, they need a reality check. The pace of play was awful. It took us 5+ hours to play on a Friday afternoon. They sent groups of 6 off in front of us on hole 10 while making the turn. They had no rangers making sure the pace of play was maintained. Waited 10 minutes at least per shot. 3 to 4 groups on every hole. The head pro told us right before we teed of the pace would get moving after the first tee. He eneded up playing behind us the whole time and if be thought that pace was normal he must not know how to run a golf course. The staff was incompetent and things need to be run differently there. I would go back strictly for the course design and views. But if I had to wait that long on each hole, I'd complain and demand my money back.
Great course but...
Really enjoyed this course and it was a really great deal. However, there was a foursome in front of is with an extra two people watching them that took forever. We waited a minimum of 5 minutes every hole. The rangers yelled at them, but they did not speed up. They had a 12 year old with them who was not playing but would just drive the cart around. The watchers would hang back so we couldn't hit even if the golfers were on the green. The little kid would play in the sand and not rake anything. If it wasn't for the group in front of us, everything would be 5 stars. Staff is very friendly and cart girl comes by every 3 holes.
Terrible Greens
I love the golf course and continue to give the course a chance at getting the greens at least close to the level of the numerous surrounding courses where the greens are truly excellent but once again bad experience. The greens once again were rough, slow and just plain awful. The Head Pro was very courteous and yet when I asked how are the greens he said 'they are excellent'. I can only come to the conclusion he unfortunately does not get a chance to play at Spencer Olin, Far Oaks, Annbriar to name a few in the area that truly do have 'excellent' greens. While the price is good, there are simply too many other courses in the area where the greens are in great condition. Disappointed yet again.
Great course
Went out just expecting a decent time and was amazed with the beauty and overall play of the course. I am definitely going back here very soon!
Great Course, Great Value
Great course, excellent condition and challenging all for a great price! If in the area a must play.
Terrible greens
The course overall was set up very nice. I could only use my driver on a couple holes which was fine by me, precise golfing is usually fun. The bad part of the day was waiting 5-10 minutes on the tee box and sometimes out in the fairway. The greens were by far the worst I have played in a long time, it looked like they hadn't been mowed in a week. The bunkers were absolutely atrocious.
tough course
Alot of blind shots. Patchy greens on a few but overall greens in great shape. Play was slow because of people making the turn off 10 and starting before last tee time of day, ours, gets started. Beautiful course. Very challenging.
Must play stl metro course
This course offers positional play, let it rip driving holes and short and long par 3's. The Illinois soil makes for near perfect fairway and rough conditions. The only negative is the greens curently have a surface that is not very predictableball speed wise.
Play the twilight at 30.00 and have a great round.
Great time!
Second time playing the course but I have to say the condition was outstanding! The fairways were just about perfect. The greens hold beautifully. Very much worth your time to play Stonewolf!
Great course
Very challenging well kept golf course. I will definitely be back to play again.
Beautiful layout
This is a really good layout, some really tough holes (like #1) and some average ones, not really any easy ones. The course is in really good condition although the greens could be a little faster. All in all a very good course, and great value.
The inconsiderate staff allows people to start on back nine when busy
The staff allowed three groups to tee off on the back nine as we were making the turn. This jammed the whole course up for the entire back nine. We spoke to the assistant pro about this and he wasn't interested in what we had to say. He was in the middle of watching the World Cup on TV. This is the second time they have done this to me. Course bunkers were in bad shape. The fairways and greens were diseased. Would not recommend!!!
SLOW start slow play
They started us off over 1/2 hour late. (guessing they let members out without a tee time or just overbooked) No carts were available until time to tee off (first time this has happened to me ever in over 30 years playing golf; anywhere). POORLY managed on the day I played. Greens were uncut and extremely woolly. Ball bounced everywhere. Sand traps were all washed out. Looks as if it was better managed it would be a GREAT place to play and would love to go back and play at that time. Do not play on weekends.
Really nice layout
Great course to play, but every green needed work(patchy colors). Fairways excellent, rough not too thick, most tee boxes in good shape, bunkers wet from previous day's rain. Two of us played in 3hrs 10min even though it was cart path only;course not crowded due to rain coming by 5:00pm. Few blind shots but gps and course markers very helpful. Will definitely play again this year!
Uhhh hello!?
I was playing alone and set an early tea time so I wouldn't be held back by groups. They start me off at ten which was fine. The maintenance guys start appearing at hole 15. The back 9 was fine as the guys were respectful and moved out of the way.
I make the turn and I see guys in front of me. Luckily they played quickly, but I was wondering why they start some out at 10 and some at 1. Seems like an eventual log jam waiting to happen. 1 was ok as there was a greenskeeper waiting off to the side. As I drove up he starting mowing the green and then stopped. I always feel rushed knowing they're waiting for me but I chalk that up to my own issue because the job has to get done.
Hole two through 8 was infuriating. I had a guy drive by me and meet up w another guy who was raking the sand. There are 2 traps with guys and machines feet from where I'm aiming. I was playing a nice round and fearful for these idiots I shank one way left off the course. I decided to skip the rest of the hole and move on. Next hole there is a blind shot to an elevated green. I hit away without knowing 2 more guys are right off the green. My ball ended up on the green but I was unable to see it. I ask one of the guys if he saw a ball come through and he said no. I walked up to see the ball but I was in disbelief that these guys work that close to where people aim with no regard. Anyway, the last few holes were filled w sounds of lawn mowers feet behind waiting for me to hit to make for a very in enjoyable round.
I got to 9 and finally got away from the oblivious crew. It was Tuesday at 10 am so the emergency sirens started going off. It wasn't my day. I was going to complain in the club house but figured they might just give me a rain check for the nine holes. It wasn't worth because I'll never go back. The maintenance crew needs some help in the etiquette department. They don't seem to realize why they have a job.
Very disappointing.
Poor bunker conditions. Greens slow and full of POA. Extremely slow! No pros monitoring pace of play! Cart quit on hole 15. Called pro shop and it was closed. Very disappointing!
