Stonewolf Golf Club
About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

View Tee Box #1 Photo submitted by Sundayfun on 10/21/2012
Great course
Very challenging well kept golf course. I will definitely be back to play again.
Beautiful layout
This is a really good layout, some really tough holes (like #1) and some average ones, not really any easy ones. The course is in really good condition although the greens could be a little faster. All in all a very good course, and great value.
The inconsiderate staff allows people to start on back nine when busy
The staff allowed three groups to tee off on the back nine as we were making the turn. This jammed the whole course up for the entire back nine. We spoke to the assistant pro about this and he wasn't interested in what we had to say. He was in the middle of watching the World Cup on TV. This is the second time they have done this to me. Course bunkers were in bad shape. The fairways and greens were diseased. Would not recommend!!!
SLOW start slow play
They started us off over 1/2 hour late. (guessing they let members out without a tee time or just overbooked) No carts were available until time to tee off (first time this has happened to me ever in over 30 years playing golf; anywhere). POORLY managed on the day I played. Greens were uncut and extremely woolly. Ball bounced everywhere. Sand traps were all washed out. Looks as if it was better managed it would be a GREAT place to play and would love to go back and play at that time. Do not play on weekends.
Typical Nicklaus...
Love the layout. Jack makes the course easy to play from the right spots, but make errant shots and you WILL pay the price.
Really nice layout
Great course to play, but every green needed work(patchy colors). Fairways excellent, rough not too thick, most tee boxes in good shape, bunkers wet from previous day's rain. Two of us played in 3hrs 10min even though it was cart path only;course not crowded due to rain coming by 5:00pm. Few blind shots but gps and course markers very helpful. Will definitely play again this year!
Uhhh hello!?
I was playing alone and set an early tea time so I wouldn't be held back by groups. They start me off at ten which was fine. The maintenance guys start appearing at hole 15. The back 9 was fine as the guys were respectful and moved out of the way.
I make the turn and I see guys in front of me. Luckily they played quickly, but I was wondering why they start some out at 10 and some at 1. Seems like an eventual log jam waiting to happen. 1 was ok as there was a greenskeeper waiting off to the side. As I drove up he starting mowing the green and then stopped. I always feel rushed knowing they're waiting for me but I chalk that up to my own issue because the job has to get done.
Hole two through 8 was infuriating. I had a guy drive by me and meet up w another guy who was raking the sand. There are 2 traps with guys and machines feet from where I'm aiming. I was playing a nice round and fearful for these idiots I shank one way left off the course. I decided to skip the rest of the hole and move on. Next hole there is a blind shot to an elevated green. I hit away without knowing 2 more guys are right off the green. My ball ended up on the green but I was unable to see it. I ask one of the guys if he saw a ball come through and he said no. I walked up to see the ball but I was in disbelief that these guys work that close to where people aim with no regard. Anyway, the last few holes were filled w sounds of lawn mowers feet behind waiting for me to hit to make for a very in enjoyable round.
I got to 9 and finally got away from the oblivious crew. It was Tuesday at 10 am so the emergency sirens started going off. It wasn't my day. I was going to complain in the club house but figured they might just give me a rain check for the nine holes. It wasn't worth because I'll never go back. The maintenance crew needs some help in the etiquette department. They don't seem to realize why they have a job.
Very disappointing.
Poor bunker conditions. Greens slow and full of POA. Extremely slow! No pros monitoring pace of play! Cart quit on hole 15. Called pro shop and it was closed. Very disappointing!
Great course. Definitely going again.
Fantastic golfing experience all around. Course was in great shape. Definitely a huge step up in challenge from other courses I've played. Every hole required management and forethought. NOT a place you can mindlessly rip driver off the tee. Lots of elevation change, and definitely lots of rough to challenge any shot that ventures much away from the fairway. Only complaint was lack of sand in many of the bunkers; hopefully they'll be filling and grading those soon.
course conditions
Pace of play is usally better but was slow on this day. The greens had been airated so putting was not very true. They need to work on the sand traps not much sand and they needed to be racked. Overall the course is in good shape i always enjoy playing at Stonewolf.
Fun Round
As usual, this course is in very good shape. The course is very well organized with tee times and pairing different groups. Pace of play is good. I highly recommend playing it.
Smoking deal for late Sunday
Had a great time, GPS carts worked fine. Need a score card with overview of hole to see some bunkers and other hazards. Don't get off line too far, no chance to get back in play, holes are lined with OTB and heavy woods, no chance to find your ball.
very good course to play
From the tee to the green, if u pay attention there are many hints on the course, if u confident with ur swing, u gonna have lots fun!
Could be better
In general, the course was okay. I think it plays tough, and maybe I played too far back. My concern was the greens. They were lumpy, had a lot of foreign grass in the bent, and bounced on every putt. They need to be rolled to smooth them out.
Also, staff never told us the back had been punched. That was not the problem, the foreign grasses and lumpy was the problem. Sand traps had not been raked.
On a positive, our GPS would not work, and the front desk immediately sent someone out that was very pleasant, and wound up giving us his cart, as he could not get it to work either.
All in all, a great course, that needs more maintenance. I would recommend the course, but not at their rack rates. It is a 25 course, at present.
shot makers dream
First time playing this course & I must admit, I was a little disappointed. I have played other Jack Nicklaus courses that were in better shape than this. Overall it was ok, but the grass was patchy around a lot of the greens, the fairways needed mowing, some greens had rough spots (which were taken out of play by the placement of the pins) but worst of all was the pace of play. Over 5 1/2 hours to play 18 on a Sunday afternoon...The course has a great layout and forces you to lay up off of several tees. this makes you think of how to play the course, not just go pound it as far as you can. Thanks Jack! All of the things I mentioned above can be fixed with a little TLC and I will be back to play again, but might I suggest a marshall or two to keep the pace of play at 4hrs?!
excellent course
Great job jack really challenging course with lots of fun holes to play
Excellent value for the money.
Zoysia fairways have not completely come in yet, but the greens, tees, and rough are in great shape. Beautiful clubhouse, nice course layout, elevation changes, good variety of holes, very friendly staff. Convenient location just off I-64. I highly recommend this course.
Only minor exception was the grill. I realize it was a Tuesday afternoon, but the service was terrible and the food subpar.
Pace of Play and Bunekrs
Pace of play has been terrible at this course every time I have played and there are no marshals to help speed up play.
Bunkers were in terrible shape with clumps of mud and not much sand. At an upscale course like this you should expect better
