About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

Golfer Reviews
Great course. Definitely going again.
Fantastic golfing experience all around. Course was in great shape. Definitely a huge step up in challenge from other courses I've played. Every hole required management and forethought. NOT a place you can mindlessly rip driver off the tee. Lots of elevation change, and definitely lots of rough to challenge any shot that ventures much away from the fairway. Only complaint was lack of sand in many of the bunkers; hopefully they'll be filling and grading those soon.
course conditions
Pace of play is usally better but was slow on this day. The greens had been airated so putting was not very true. They need to work on the sand traps not much sand and they needed to be racked. Overall the course is in good shape i always enjoy playing at Stonewolf.
Fun Round
As usual, this course is in very good shape. The course is very well organized with tee times and pairing different groups. Pace of play is good. I highly recommend playing it.
Smoking deal for late Sunday
Had a great time, GPS carts worked fine. Need a score card with overview of hole to see some bunkers and other hazards. Don't get off line too far, no chance to get back in play, holes are lined with OTB and heavy woods, no chance to find your ball.
very good course to play
From the tee to the green, if u pay attention there are many hints on the course, if u confident with ur swing, u gonna have lots fun!
Could be better
In general, the course was okay. I think it plays tough, and maybe I played too far back. My concern was the greens. They were lumpy, had a lot of foreign grass in the bent, and bounced on every putt. They need to be rolled to smooth them out.
Also, staff never told us the back had been punched. That was not the problem, the foreign grasses and lumpy was the problem. Sand traps had not been raked.
On a positive, our GPS would not work, and the front desk immediately sent someone out that was very pleasant, and wound up giving us his cart, as he could not get it to work either.
All in all, a great course, that needs more maintenance. I would recommend the course, but not at their rack rates. It is a 25 course, at present.
shot makers dream
First time playing this course & I must admit, I was a little disappointed. I have played other Jack Nicklaus courses that were in better shape than this. Overall it was ok, but the grass was patchy around a lot of the greens, the fairways needed mowing, some greens had rough spots (which were taken out of play by the placement of the pins) but worst of all was the pace of play. Over 5 1/2 hours to play 18 on a Sunday afternoon...The course has a great layout and forces you to lay up off of several tees. this makes you think of how to play the course, not just go pound it as far as you can. Thanks Jack! All of the things I mentioned above can be fixed with a little TLC and I will be back to play again, but might I suggest a marshall or two to keep the pace of play at 4hrs?!
excellent course
Great job jack really challenging course with lots of fun holes to play
Excellent value for the money.
Zoysia fairways have not completely come in yet, but the greens, tees, and rough are in great shape. Beautiful clubhouse, nice course layout, elevation changes, good variety of holes, very friendly staff. Convenient location just off I-64. I highly recommend this course.
Only minor exception was the grill. I realize it was a Tuesday afternoon, but the service was terrible and the food subpar.
Pace of Play and Bunekrs
Pace of play has been terrible at this course every time I have played and there are no marshals to help speed up play.
Bunkers were in terrible shape with clumps of mud and not much sand. At an upscale course like this you should expect better
A Must Play Course
Wow! I played here on 5/2/2014 on my way back to Chicago from a St. Louis trip. Looked at the courses on my way back home and this one stood out. Have not played any other course in the area to compare with BUT this course was outstanding! First off, it is very challenging, especially if you have never played here before. Half of the front 9 holes are target golf where less than driver or 3-wood is needed off the tee since the fairway ends to waste area. But where the course becomes super challenging is the terrain of the course. Hilly is an understatement. Hole #1 is qualified for X-Game snowboarding competition. It is borderline silly. It is playable if you know where to hit your tee shot. Almost all the greens are tiered or have undulations, so they no bargains for being on regulation.
This course has changing elevation throughout. Not something you see in the Chicago suburbs. It is beautiful to the eye. You need to be a triathlon to walk this course, even just 9 holes. No 2 fairway play adjacent to one another. Fairway is fairly wide/generous but if you miss, you'll be penalized. Average number of water hazards and traps.
Condition of the course: Fairway was outstanding. Greens were a bit patchy from players not repairing ball marks. Almost all bunkers were under repair; dug out where you see the drainage pipe so they were packed down.
I can't wait to play this course again. I know a little more to position my shots. It will still be challenging. Wish there was a course remotely similar to Stonewolf in DuPage county. Bring lots of balls. Seriously.
Good value for a challenging course
I've played here a few times and really like the course layout.
Yesterday was a little on the busy side and cart path only so it made for a long day (5+ hours) Everyone is friendly and the scenery is nice.
Good Value
Played at Stonewolf as a 3some Monday at 3. We were one of few groups playing. Tee boxes, bunkers and greens were in nice shape for mid April.
impressed
from the second you walk in the clubhouse you're impressed. pictures of the designer jack nickalus everywhere. the pro shop has everything and a friendly guy behind the counter. golf carts have gps on them. classy. the course is difficult but really fun. it rained pretty hard on my girlfriend and I but it was still fun. only been playing a year and getting better. I enjoy a challenge. i'll be back.
Challenging course
First time out this season. First few holes are tough. Greens were in good condition. Sand traps were not in good shape, but we did just have 5 inches of rain this week.
Nice cours
We played the day after a good rain so the conditions were wet and soupy, but you can tell they take good care of the course and when played during peek season it is a very nice course! I would definitely rev come d this course and will be playing there again.
Like the course, but the conditions were tough
I have always like Stonewolf. This was about the fourth or fifth time playing it. 25 MPH winds with 40 MPH gusts make it very tough. Greens were a little bumpy, but it is early in the season. Suggest you try it after late April.
If you haven't already tried these out, you should check out Foxford Hills and Chalet Hills out in Cary, IL (about an hour north of Naperville). They both have some nice elevation changes, and they're both challenging yet fun, and they're usually in great shape and aren't too expensive. I'd also check out Bowes Creek and The Highlands of Elgin, both of which are in Elgin. Both are great courses, albeit a bit more expensive than the 2 in Cary that I mentioned. I'm originally from the St. Louis area, and I think Stone Wolf is certainly the most interesting course in the area (at least on the Illinois side of the river).
