Stonewolf Golf Club
About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

Challenging course with many great holes
Our foursome enjoyed the challenges at Stonewolf and also the scenic beauty of the course. The course condition was not ideal but this was somewhat expected since we were playing in early November. The sand traps were the only significant drawback as the majority of them had no sand. Again, this may have been due to the time of year. We all agreed that we want to play the course again when the weather turns better next spring. It was a great value for the money.
excellent golf course, definetly not for a beginner, fairways and greens are some of the best in the area. book online,
I highly recommend the course, some of the holes require the player to think, using a driver off the tee on some of the par 4's require, you to manage your distance properly.
Good course, tough pin placements, good conditions.
Windy day. Apparently it was cart path only and no one told me (I had to rush to the teebox, even though I was 10 minutes early). It wasn't until hole 9 that someon yelled at me for being on the fairway (going in on the entrance and leaving on the exit posted). It would have been better had they explained that when I checked in. Only complaint with the course was the sand. Not raked, wet and hard as plaster board, so no way to dig into the sand to get the ball out.
Golden Wolf
To start with elevationnnnnnn, followed by strategically placed sand traps in the middle of course, as well as guarding the greens. The greens themselves are double tiered, small surface area, and false fronted. My advice for this track is to not get caught up in analyzing everything, because there is a lot to take in. Play conservative and don't force shots; windows of opportunity will present themselves...... be patient.
Jack always takes me to the woodshed
This is the only course in the area I play from the bunkers. My wife played it and after her third or fourth bunker abover her head she said" Jack Nickalaus is a golf devil. At lease Jack could have put in a rope ladder in for us short folks.". I alway curse this course. Can't wait to go back.
too much area to get in trouble, very tough for 16+ hcp
$18 was a super deal, just very hard course. Only thing that ticked our group off was we waived the leaf blower machine guy by us when we were ready to tee off. he didnt shut it down and wait so might as well let him go by. he kept the blower trailer he was pulling going and filled our golf carts with dirt/debris/etc. Who trained this guy!!
Good Day in October
Course is challenging, beautiful and fun. Greens in very good shape for mid-October, especially for a late Sunday game. Price is good for this course. More people would play golf if they could get this rate. Fairways in good shape for wet conditions. Bunkers could have used a little more maintenace.
Would love to play there often with the rate we paid.
They Overbook
Every time I play this course, it is a 5 hr round. You start a half hour after your tee time, and wait 15 mins or more between shots. The course is nice, if u can stand slow play.....I CANNOT! Oh, and I have NEVER, EVER seen a marshall ( although I have called the clubhouse to complain the last 2 times I've been there, while I'm waiting to take a shot.....ridiculous).
Great course in great condition
Great course in great condition. In the top tier of public courses in the area.
Needs better management
This is a nice course but the pace of play is terrible. How about a marshal.
Very hilly.
Very hilly! I walked and carried my bag.Wouldn't recommend that for MOST people.A couple of hills I hitched a ride EXTREME vertical rise.Enjoyed the course. Some holes had trouble with club selection mainly due to never playing here before.Bunker placement made for a tough round of golf.
Amazing value if you use golfnow.com
This course is as good as it gets for public courses. Rolling hill fairways, well manicured greens, picturesque tee boxes, and well designed private holes.
I used every club in my bag
This course was a lot of fun to play. It has a lot of variety in terms of elevation, distance and difficulty. Very scenic and a welcome change from the courses where it's driver, short iron and putt on every flat hole. This course requires accuracy, length at times and a lot of planning. If you can't keep it in the fairway or hit your distances fairly consistently, this course could eat you up. It's a course you need to know and luckily I got to play with a former member. If it weren't for him, I would have shot a much higher score.
On another note, they have started to aerate some of the greens.
Course is in great condition.
A shot makers course, need to be precise and hit to certain spots on the course, greens in great shape.
Great Time
Thank you so much for keeping the course that good. My daughter's and I had a great time and can't wait to get back!
Really Nice Shape
The only thing I can say that isn't great about this course, was the greens were a little slow, but my guess is they just over-seeded. They are usually pretty fast. Some of the bunkers were a bit shallow and firm like they hadn't been tended to in a while. It's my Hot Deal favorite course..
Tough for average players.
The layout is well-designed but extremely challenging at every level. You have to hit the ball straight and tight most shots, but quite a few shots you must shape. Great course for the highly skilled player.
Great course if you could just skip the pro shop.
One of the top three courses in the St. Louis area . The course was amazing . Good job greensman. Jack. Did a good job with this piece of earth. The staff in the pro shop were surly . When I told them I book with GolfNow they treated me like a second class citizen. I got stuck in a highway detour and the counter help said" tought luck you are on the tee box right now" . I had to put my shoes on in the cart as I hurried to the first tee box. All so I could get out before the eightsome behind me.
Nice afternoon on a challenging course
Nice to finally see this course. Played a round last year but on a day that was very foggy. Didn't see the first 5 holes that day and barely saw the remainder of the front 9 before the fog finally burned off.
Pros: Challenging course requiring lots of well placed shots. Greens in good shape and fair.
Cons: Very hot humid day and followed a threesome that didn't understand the idea of allowing faster players to play through. Hole 15 (a par 5) is under repair near tee boxes so they have it set up as a par three (temp tee boxes in the fairway)
