Stonewolf Golf Club

About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

Walters Golf Management Hits a Hole in One!
Walters Golf has some of the best courses in the St Louis area and Stonewolf may very well be there flagship. Bogey Hills, Gateway National, Pevely Farms, and Bent Creek are beautiful courses that I really enjoy playing but Stonewolf does not take a backseat to any of them.
This course is difficult. Numerous bunkers and the greens are smallish or multi-tiered. There is water but it really doesn't come into play. The Bermuda grass fairways aren't still waiting for spring but there is still enough to hit on.
Staff was nice enough but the GPS didn't work on the carts but there are enough markings on the course sprinkler heads and yard markers on the cart paths to compensate.
Even for a golf now deal, the course was a bit pricey, $37.00 , but if I am going to pay a course like this is worth the money. Walters consistently offers the best prices for the quality of course which is why I look for their courses first on Golf Now.
Great shape!
Stonewolf by far is the nicest, most well maintained course we’ve played this summer. No bare spots in the fairways and the greens were not ate up. A bit pricey but thanks to TeeOff, it was a great value!
Nice day!
The coarse was great. The greens ,not all, were in good shape. Just a very nice time. The carts were very nice with gps and score card built in!
Gorgeous layout but challenging
This is one of my favorite courses in the area. You better bring your A-game and play smart on a few of these holes.
Sevensome
It all started when we walked in—I should’ve known things were off when I went to put mayo on my sandwich and found a lovely patch of mold. I flagged it to the young lady behind the counter, and in a dazzling display of customer service, she handed me a mold-free sandwich like she’d just saved the day. You’d think in this day and age, if one’s moldy, they’d toss the whole batch. Not here. The next person got their own little helping of fungus.
Out on the course, all was fine until hole 3, when pace of play hit a wall—like a guy who’s been on a cheese-only diet for two months (which, frankly, is safer than eating here). I first blamed the foursome ahead. Then the group ahead of them when I saw them on hole 7. But then it became clear: the problem was a sevensome. Yes, seven people playing as one group. My phone even tried to autocorrect it—because that shouldn’t be a thing.
When I asked about it at the turn, one of the beer-sipping Hoosiers turned to me with a big grin and said, “Yeah,” like he was quoting Toby Keith—“That’s something to be proud of.” Never mind the dozen groups behind them grinding their teeth.
I got a rain check instead of a refund, but honestly, I’d rather not give them another red cent after that whole fungal, slow-play fiasco.
Stonewolf on a tuesday afternoon
Great course, great price on weekdays, not too many golfers. Grounds crew held us up for almost 10mins on two holes by standing in the fairway. Stepping to the side and allowing us to hit quickly would have kept the pace of play flowing. Other than that- awesome round.
Great Course
Great course conditions and layout. It was very hot the afternoon I played and the staff put out coolers with free bottled water on a couple of the holes.
Excellent and challenging.
The course was excellent and challenging. A lot of rain the day before limited the golf cart abilities. The layout was great and staff was awesome. Only complaint was the pace of play. We didn't have a tee time in front of us but there seemed to be a huge bunch up between several people on every hole. But I would definitely recommend this course to the more experienced golfer.
I Thought Stonewolf Was Heading In The Right Direction – But No
Just when you think Stonewolf has turned the corner in the right direction, you experience some head scratching things.
Their GPS in the carts never works, plus, it is an unusual location (in front of the passenger). The practice green was not mowed. They do not move the tee markers everyday – leaving dead grass where the markers were once were.
Pace of play was unacceptable. 2 groups on nearly every tee. No ranger on the course to correct this. Water in numerous bunkers (8, 10, 14). Hole 12 had a “swamp” in the middle of the fairway. The driving range has 3 tiers, the lower tier where we hit balls was fine. The 2nd tier is in awful shape.
They have removed strips of sod in numerous fairways. Looks awful and not sure if they are going to put new sod down (2, 3, 5, 6). White tee on hole 9 had bad spots. 10th fairway had bad sections.
The greens are ok. Little spongy & mushy from them overwatering. Lot of footprints because of this. 8th green was beat up.
On hole 12, a tree is getting too tall now and is blocking the view of the left side of the hole.
They have fixed the small sink hole, which damaged the cart path on hole 6. The weekday senior rate is $45 – which is a nice price.
Great, challenging course.
The course was in great shape. The greens were true, fast, and difficult. Great layout. It’s a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Can’t wait to play it again.
Our go to course
My son and I play stonewolf regularly. Twilight rates are a decent value and we love the layout. Course is usually in a pretty decent condition.
