Golf Advisor: Top Military Courses in the U.S. (2021 #10)
Reviews
Very happy
Was quite happy with the conditions of the course.
It had been a couple of years since I played all 18 holes here.
Course was in great shape, fairways well manicured and greens in good condition. Always enjoyed the layout and I'm glad I came back. Good value for the money..
Course Was Rough
The course played fine. However, it was in rough shape...especially many of the tee boxes. If they weren't rough and bumpy (i.e., not flat), the grass appeared diseased or dead.
military steer away from this course
the local jobs for the military are long random hour, which are not set in stone. We often golf as singles bc its hard to plan for golf. When we have free time, we try to play. This morning I called at 0600 to see if they can put out a single... the unprofessional clerk (he is known for this) said the earliest is after 1400. That's crazy bc golf now had whole lot of tee times in between. I can't tell if this dude is lazy or thinks that he owns the course. MWR and the base you guys should know us military golfers rather go somewhere else that deal with the attitudes here.
Hidden gem
Well maintained greens and fairways. Lots of interesting holes. Every hole was playable for par from the regular tees. Would definitely play it again.
Good Time
I had never played this course even though it is within 15 minutes from where I live. The staff was friendly and the course was in decent shape even though the weather was hot. 89 degrees for the better part of the round. The wind picked up after the 12th hole which made the last 6 holes difficult which did in the decent score I had going but overall my sons and I had a good outing. I didn't understand the pin placement on the 16th hole though. It was on a slope on the ridge of the green where the green was flowing down to the lower level from a high platform and the ability to make any put outside 2 feet was impossible. Why would anyone put a pin placement on a 45 degree slope on a family weekday course. Other than that the course was challenging but not hard and you could make some scores if you had it clicking that round. I had 5 good scoring holes out of the 18 and I thing that I could have had 4 more if my front 9 game was more in tuned. I am a 22 handicap and am 70 years old and thought the day overall was good. The staff was great.
Value
The best value for the cost in north-eastern illinois. Friendly people both staff and players.
What has happened to a nic course
Played yesterday here and the fairways and greens need water badly. The greens are ridiculously slow.

Good value
Not a perfect course but nice layout and reasonable price. Rough is too long and caught the clubs too deep. Greens could have been managed better. But overall good for the money.
Person in the pro shop very rude could not understand the price from the golf now.com Did not agree with the price from Golf now did not want to to give me a riding cart overall not pleasant the course was in great shape
Great course for the money
Pros
- course was in good shape (Late October)
- course layout is tough (Blue Tees)
- good price for 18 w/cart ($25)
Cons
- impatient groups behind made us rush shots
- cart was included in our fee, but they made us pay a $2 deposit for the key and when we returned the key, they said you dont get that money back, which makes no sense so be aware
Justin, my name is Adam, the GM at VMGC. I'm glad you found our course conditions good for late season golf. I am truly sorry you felt rushed. Also, I'd like to find out more about the deposit you had to pay, this is not, and has never been our policy for cart keys. Please if you have a moment, look us up and contact me please via phone. Thanks for your business.
