9th hole cart path fairway Photo submitted by HOTSPOTTS on 05/09/2018
Nice afternoon!
The course is in better shape than I expected.
Haven’t played here in a few years and was pleasantly surprised by the course conditions. Most greens are in great shape.
Great Course - No personnel
The course is a great condition, beautiful layout...
No refreshment cart;
No ranger moving slow golfers along.
So if you don't mind waiting and trying to self-regulate pace of play...
Worst golf experience
Hickory Hills provided unequivocally the most unpleasant golf experience I could ever imagine. From start to finish I felt like I was in an episode of either the Twilight Zone or Punk'd.
The process of checking in for our tee time felt as if I was checking in for a flight to North Korea. The starter completely ignored my playing partner and I after hearing our tee time to chat with a coworker in front of us.
The group in front of us rolled up with cases of outside alcohol, then got into a shouting match with the starter before they even got to the tee box (which had at least a dozen carts lined up due to overbooking of the tee sheet. They also were able to bring the excessive amount of booze with them despite the show) They also played 3 balls each, drove their carts on the greens and tee boxes, and drove back down the fairway to pick up our balls multiple times. We immediately were hit into twice on hole 2 with no 'fore,' and no apology on the third tee. This happened several more times throughout the round. We didn't see a single ranger during our 6 hour round.
Honestly, I feel bad for the grounds crew here. They obviously are putting a lot of effort into the course and it could have been an enjoyable place to play if it weren't for the unpleasant staff, useless management and overall lake of golf etiquette and safety shown by its patrons. On almost every hole, someone in our group would be addressing the ball and about to swing only to be interrupted by a cart coming off the opposite fairway into ours to take 8 practice swings and chunk their ball 30 yards back into the trees separating holes. This course is TIGHT! It's absolutely insane how close some of the greens are to tee boxes, concession stands and other holes. If you have more money than brains and decide to pay $60 to experience this nightmare of a course, you may want to bring a helmet.
Shoutout to our playing partners who saved the round from being a total loss. We eventually were able to shake our heads and laugh at the absurdity of the situation.
Extremely rude staff and Ranger
The staff in the club house was very rude. I said hello and the man goes off about how we will get kicked out of the cart touches the grass.
The round started on a low note right there.
We understand cart path only, but he was very stern for no reason.
The ranger had extremely poor manners. Multiple groups were complaining about him. He would drive while people were in the tee box. He was also checking everyone’s cart multiple times through the round.
Ranger made tons of noise and also was giving negative comments to each group.
Pace of play was very bad.
I would not recommend the $70 for a tee time here.
Wacky layout
The most confusing course layout ever. VERY easy to find out you’re playing the wrong holes. Halfway house always closed. 2 sand traps total on course.
Screwy course
Chanllenging
Very Challenging course, 1st time playing it, also referred to by locals as "Hackery Hills". Very true if you are not in the fairway off the tee, you are in the tree lined rolling hills on all holes. The earth rolls on both sides to unknown OOB hazards, ball recovery nill, no sand, excellent scoring holes though especially par 3's, overall bogey golf is possible, as long as pace of play is moving. For a Tuesday afternoon very disappointing on pace of play, golfers taking Mulligans, searching for balls, zig zagging, wait times ridiculous between holes. Players in patient, who wouldn't be, no Rangers, or refreshments on course at all, no drinking water on the course. I can't imagine playing this course on the weekend with full 4 some-somes of hung over golfers, golfers zig zagging, and getting frustrated for a 6hr round.
Well maintained course
The course was well maintained, and offered a variety of holes and related challenges. The price was also reasonable. The staff was professional, friendly, responsive, and efficient.
Ridiculous, layout
I gave this course a port review for a few reasons. The biggest reason is the layout is extremely funky. The holes are way too close to each other and some of the greens are very close to buildings. It’s not in the best shape and the cart rental procedure seems excessive. Basically I’m not a fan and don’t plan to return.
