Just ok
Round was just ok. Course itself was in good condition except for a couple of greens and fairways. Price was reasonable thru golfnow given the course shape and pace. Pace of play of out twosome was good on front 9 but really slowed on back. Waited on probably 6 out 9 of the holes. Course was challenging. Better shape than previous years I played here. Staff was ok.amenities around club were fine. I’d play again if at a cheap price. Just ok round overall.
Slow pace of play
With the course being worked on for improvement, it has become extremely crowded. I never had any issues as far as waiting to tee off on every hole.
The bad part is the starter allows singles to go out in front of threesomes. And to top it off the single is walking. Now that doesn't make any sense. Hickory has never been this crowded since I started golfing 16 years ago. So maybe they are not trained properly for these situations. Hopefully they resolve this matter and pace of play can be back to a normal 4 hour round.
Nice Course
A lot of hills and slopes so you get some challenging lies. Will be back
Course is in good condition, little slow for a weekday morning
Best condition in 20 years
Hickory Hills is in surprisingly good condition. So much better than other years that I’ve played here. The greens are in great condition but earlier players did not take care of ball marks and were dragging their feet. Too bad, because they would have been fair even though the slopes make them very challenging. I booked 3 consecutive tee times and the staff was very accommodating. We had a great day!
Nice afternoon!
The course is in better shape than I expected.
Haven’t played here in a few years and was pleasantly surprised by the course conditions. Most greens are in great shape.
Great Course - No personnel
The course is a great condition, beautiful layout...
No refreshment cart;
No ranger moving slow golfers along.
So if you don't mind waiting and trying to self-regulate pace of play...
Worst golf experience
Hickory Hills provided unequivocally the most unpleasant golf experience I could ever imagine. From start to finish I felt like I was in an episode of either the Twilight Zone or Punk'd.
The process of checking in for our tee time felt as if I was checking in for a flight to North Korea. The starter completely ignored my playing partner and I after hearing our tee time to chat with a coworker in front of us.
The group in front of us rolled up with cases of outside alcohol, then got into a shouting match with the starter before they even got to the tee box (which had at least a dozen carts lined up due to overbooking of the tee sheet. They also were able to bring the excessive amount of booze with them despite the show) They also played 3 balls each, drove their carts on the greens and tee boxes, and drove back down the fairway to pick up our balls multiple times. We immediately were hit into twice on hole 2 with no 'fore,' and no apology on the third tee. This happened several more times throughout the round. We didn't see a single ranger during our 6 hour round.
Honestly, I feel bad for the grounds crew here. They obviously are putting a lot of effort into the course and it could have been an enjoyable place to play if it weren't for the unpleasant staff, useless management and overall lake of golf etiquette and safety shown by its patrons. On almost every hole, someone in our group would be addressing the ball and about to swing only to be interrupted by a cart coming off the opposite fairway into ours to take 8 practice swings and chunk their ball 30 yards back into the trees separating holes. This course is TIGHT! It's absolutely insane how close some of the greens are to tee boxes, concession stands and other holes. If you have more money than brains and decide to pay $60 to experience this nightmare of a course, you may want to bring a helmet.
Shoutout to our playing partners who saved the round from being a total loss. We eventually were able to shake our heads and laugh at the absurdity of the situation.
