Wolf Hollow Golf Club
About
Wolf Hollow Golf Club originally opened in 1928 as Lena Golf Club. The course tumbles across northwest Illinois' gently rolling hills, incorporating quite a few elevation changes into the layout. The golf course has a true risk-reward design that will thoroughly test your shot-making abilities. With proper course management and a bit of luck, there are several birdie opportunities to be had. Measuring in at just over 6,400 yards from the back tees, the course manages to give you a few lengthy holes but it will also put your short-game skills to the test. The 16th is one of Wolf Hollow Golf Club's most intimidating holes because this par 4 has trouble everywhere. A creek and tall grasses guard the left of the fairway and the small green requires a nearly perfect approach shot.

Always enjoyable
I've played Wolf Hollow at Lena, IL many times over the last 20 years and always find it a pleasure. The course is well maintained, even in the drought conditions we are experiencing this year. It has an interesting variety of holes and, as a senior, can be played at a reasonable distance from the gold tees. The pro, Doral, is always welcoming and the bar staff is as well, The menu is limited and that's just fine for a quick after round lunch experience.
My only concerns were the sand traps, which were rather thin and hard and the areas of cart paths that are dirt and gravel and rough, though I realize that the cost of completing paths could be prohibitive. Regardless, those are minor issues and I will continue playing this enjoyable course.
Friendly Course
This is the third time I’ve played at Wolf Hollow and it rarely disappoints. Playing on a holiday weekend poses it’s own issues and even with paying to play 18 with a cart, it was even cheaper than other 9 hole courses. We ended up playing 9 holes with a moderately slow Memorial Day weekend pace. It wasn’t unexpected, I plan on coming back sooner than later on a more player friendly occasion.
4.75 Stars
Almost perfect in every way Wolf Hollow is worth a trip and several trips back. Wonderful topography and routing. Excellent conditions, nice folks, fun challenging golf holes and great rates. $30 w/cart during the week and lunch is included (hot or brat, chips, soda). Steal of the year!! Big uphill finishers on each nine. Highly recommend this place. You won't be disappointed and it's well worth the drive. Play Wolf Hollow and others in the area Freeport Club, Park Hills (36), Woodbine Bend, Lake Carroll and home made Brush Creek9 - don't bother playing those overpriced Galena resort courses. Great bangs for your golf buck in NW Illinois. Can't wait to return next year!!
Great setting
Played this course with an old friend who just moved here from Utah. We've known each other for about 45 years and worked and played a lot of golf together in California; mostly private clubs like Bel Air CC, Calabasas CC, Mountaingate CC and Riviera CC, where he was a 7Hcp member. This review is as much his as mine. Being an Illinois native, I am used to the landscape, while he was amazed by the setting. Among rolling hills and elevation changes, he loved the surrounding cornfields, noting the distant windmills farm and wild prairie grasses. It suits my eye he says, the fairways and greens were in excellent shape. Me being 70 yrs and he 81 yrs, he shot his age for the first time the week before. We'll be back many times.
