Challenging but fun
The course is a true test of a golfer’s skill.... and patience. Lush rough around the greens and the fairways will eat up your swing, and the slopes of the greens require tactful shots to ensure you’re not 3-4 putting. Overall, excellent course for the money.
Improving - Some Sand Traps Maintained
Many have complained about the conditions at Big Run. Frankly they are not as bad as some have described. My round today the greens were very smooth but also slower than many courses in the area. That being said if they were any faster play would slow to a crawl as many hole positions would end up unplayable. The superintendent was in a really bad mood as several of the flags were in areas I've never seen in a long while....despite playing this course well over 50 times plus over the years....I've lost count which is a good thing. Green speeds as far as I'm concerned made the course very playable. Decent grasses in most places. Lots of hills dales and fun putting challenges. Read my previous reviews. Many sand traps still not maintained but I saw quite a few that had been....so hit and moss on that. Very good value for senior at $40 during the week. I heartily recommend this place....it's a challenge even from the green tees with a slope of 133. Most people have no business playing regular white tees or the orange tips.......which can gum up speed of play at times. We had a wonderful afternoon....4 hour round, nice folks and really decent conditions. Hoping the old school bar will reopen for post round beverages soon......the clubhouse/locker room/bar are like going back in time.....a favorite clubhouse of mine. It's just not the same on the outdoor patio. Also fyi we had a few bugs flying around so it may be time to pack the bug spray. Always a solid 4 star experience in my book.
Poorly managed
Don't waste your time or money on the course. First and last time there. Such a shame, could be an amazing course
Great Layout - Terrible Condition - Rip Off
Had high hopes to try a new course after seeing all of the positive reviews. The course has a very interesting and challenging layout, and is one of the few chicagoland courses with any type of elevation whatsoever. I really was a big fan of the course design.
Unfortunately the course was in absolutely horrendous condition, the fairways hadn't been cut in days, the greens were incredibly slow and clearly had not been cut in days either, not to mention incredibly inconsistent hole to hole in terms of speed and condition (symptom again of not being cut in days and grass growing better in one place on the course vs another). As an example. I'm a 5-8 handicap and typically try to play at 6500, however, had to scoot up to the forward tees at 5900 because the ball got absolutely 0 rollout in the fairway.
End of the day I felt incredibly cheated on the $70 greens fees, I'm hoping it was a fluke because I really wanted to like the course and would love to play it in good condition. It was just simply unplayable
A challenge
Very challenging course. Pretty long with trees and hills and definitely not for short hitters.
Some holes are pretty ridiculous with hills and and blind shots but definitely worth the round and a good challenge.
Challenging and well kept
Don’t let the outdated clubhouse and practice area fool you. This is an underrated course that can play tough. I really like the many elevated tees and greens. Also, a good value on any day.
This could be a much nicer course but it does not seem to be as well taken care of as it once was. Rumors of them selling the course and it appears to be true. Fairway grass was almost as long as the rough in certain areas. Sand traps were almost unplayable with the amount of rocks in them. Will not be returning unless a large price drop.
Needs new ownership!!!! This course could be one of the best!
I dream of the day this course is bought out by someone who actually wants to make it shine. All that farmland across the street and this club has never built a nice practice facility with a driving range. Obviously the current owners do not care about making this course special because if they did you would have the best course in the state of Illinois. A good renovation with an architect such as Tom Doak would absolutely make this the number 1 golf destination around and also may even attract a pro tournament.
