Wonderful Steeple Chase
We love playing at Steeple Chase. Everything is great. Excellent course very challenging good pace of play the biggest problem no driving range. There is a golf course next door called Countryside which has a driving range but not close to the quality of Steeple Chase.
Steeple Chase Golf Club
The Good: Fun, playable Ken Killian design north of Chicago is one of the better Forest Preserve courses in the suburban area. Fairly benign front nine gives way to a very impressive closing nine with several great holes. Layout winds through wetlands (water is on 13 holes) and some woodlands. Very strong Par 3's throughout and nice variety of Par 4's and Par 5's on the back. Pretty good course conditions and large, slick greens that putt well. Good clubhouse and nice staff. Good value if you are a city resident or during twilight hours. GPS on carts!
The Bad: Sand complexes are visually impressive, but need more sand. Greens don't hold as well as they should. No driving range or short game area is huge omission. Lack of restroom areas or good signage is a negative. Pace of play can be an issue, particularly on the weekend afternoons. The front nine is relatively boring. A little overpriced at nearly $75 during peak weekend.
The Verdict: Steeple Chase is another good option in the northern Chicago suburbs. A fun course to play that won't break the bank. Very tough in the wind!!
Best Hole(s):Several great holes on the back, but the Par 4 15th is a standout. Tough driving hole and an approach that requires a shot around overhanging trees. The Par 5 18th has 2 huge ponds and very little room for error. One of the tougher closing holes in the area.
Great challenging course
The course is challenging but fair. The course is well kept and maintained.
The staff is friendly and professional
Bet value course in NW suburbs
Course is known as a "hidden" gem in Lake County. For residents, the prices are by far the best you can get anywhere for the quality of this course. It's a little steep for non-residents, but still a great place to play. Course is shorter than average, but the holes make you think about your shots and are challenging. I play this course 6-12 times a year. A lot of average/nice courses in the area, but this is the best choice by far. Conditions are always average or above, staff is friendly, and greens are taken care of nicely.
A good day!
Course is in real good shape. Greens are true and fast. Got around in just over 4hrs.
Fall Golf
Always enjoy this course, some very challinging holes 18 is a beaut
Course has been better
Lasted played this course last fall and I remember the conditions were much better. We found the tee boxes in fair shape, many bare spot and thin grass. We also found the condition of most of the greens to be a bit rough, numerous old ball marks. Fairways were in good shape, some areas in rough a bit thin.
Pace of Play
too many golfers on the course.
Wonderful Course - Great secret in Lake County
I play Steeple Chase routinely and I am always impressed with the great conditions of the course. Greens run true, fairways are properly cut and hazards are fair. Course staff is professional and courteous at all times. Pace is generally quite good and the layout is nicely created for walking or riding. Each cart has a GPS which improves pace and your scores.
I would recommend this course to anyone from beginner to skilled.
Not Worth The Trip or the Money
An unimaginative layout that is not well maintained nor aesthetically pleasing. Casual water dominated the fairways on the morning we played, yet there were no cart restrictions, leading to mucky, messy fairways. There was also no warning online or at check in regarding the fact that the greens had been punched with the larger sized holes and were nowhere close to being healed. It was like playing the old Price is Right game "Plinko" on the greens. The only positive was pace of play, as we finished in less than four hours. Still, this was my first--and needless to say--will be also be my last trip to Steeple Chase.
Fun course
Weather was great course was in great condition pace of play was great love the lay out great finishing hole one of my favorites
Excellent outing!
Course was in great shape, terrific outing!
Great course close to home
I'm thrilled with the course and its value. Highly recommend!!!
Great Conditions, Friendly Staff
A pretty, fun and playable course that is in excellent shape, and is well taken care of. Staff is very friendly, appreciates your business and does all they can to add to your enjoyment of the round. I was also very impressed with how nice they've been to my young sons when I bring them to the course for family night -- don't get that when I bring them to places like Pine Meadows.
Quick round
Surprisingly quick for a holiday weekend. Course wasn't busy, in good shape, challenging but playable. Would definitely play again.
Good Course. Early Season
Weather was supposed to be nice so wanted to get out there. Course was in surprisingly good shape for such early season. Nothing against the course/club....it was very hard to tell what the course is truly like because it was so early in the season. But...based on my experience, I would play there again.
Course Great, Staff Not
Beautiful course, great gps. No practice range, so hit balls at Countryside down the street. Only two hitting bays into nets that are in awful shape. Staff is very unfriendly, so I will not go back unless it is a
great deal.
Challenging course that is in great shape for a fall round
I had never played at Steeple Chase before but had played at the neighboring Countryside courses multiple times. I'm sorry that I spent so much time and money over there and not at this course. My biggest "problem" with the course is the practice area is almost nonexistent. There is no range but they have some nets set up that you can hit into. There is a large practice green but I did not see a short game practice area for pitching. If you are going to go to the course to practice, go to Countryside with their range, short game area, and multiple practice greens. If you are going to the course to play, go to Steeple Chase. There is no comparison when it comes to the course itself.
The course is in excellent condition for it being the middle of October. From tee to green, I do not have any criticisms about the condition of the course itself. The rough was, well, rough but I don't remember hitting off of any hard pan all day. The greens were smooth and very fast but fair. The practice green actually gives a very good representation of how the greens roll on the course. If your approach ends up above the hole, you're going to have a dicey putt that will pick up a lot of speed along the way.
That was probably my favorite part about the course. You have to play a "smart" game here as you can't just hit driver off of every tee and go flag hunting on each and every hole with your approach shots. The greens are well protected with bunkers and sometimes water. While there are not a lot of forced carries, water does come into play on 10 of the holes. There are two par 3's that are very visually daunting with a forced carry with water almost up to the front edge of the greens. The carts have GPS in them to assist with the distances to hazards and greens. I was also impressed that the GPS actually had the exact distance to the pin and not to just the center of the green. You will need it as there are plenty of blind shots around this course. The 18th hole is a prime example as it is a par 5 that is a true golf hole. You cannot see the green from the tee box as it dog legs to the left. Depending on your tee shot, you may have a second blind shot for your lay-up. The shot into the green is a forced carry over water and if you end up on the wrong side of the green, it will be a 3 putt. Be thrilled if you end up with par on this hole to end the round. I feel like the more you play this course, the better and better it will get.
For a Sunday morning, pace of play was amazing. I was part of a two-some that got paired up with another two-some. The starter on the first tee was on top of things making sure everyone got out on time. We had to wait to tee off on the second, third, and tenth tees to tee off but that was it. We got our round finished in approx 4 hours. The GPS in the carts also does a good job of letting you know if you are on pace or falling behind.
The bar/patio on the clubhouse has a great view over the water. The food was good and they have a great selection of beers and alcohol.
Overall, I was very happy with my experience even though I didn't shoot as well as I could have. I will definitely be back to take another shot at it next year and will recommend it to people who are looking for a picturesque, challenging course in the north/northwest suburbs of Chicago.
Course in good shape
First time playing and I would play again. Great Fall golf pace as we played as a twosome in just under 3 1/2 hrs. Course in good shape
Thank you for the review. Just wanted to address a couple of the concerns you had the morning you played here. Yes, the course was very wet. We had received over an inch of rain the day prior. The morning you played, was a busy day and our superintendent figured a "Cart Path Only" restriction would slow down play and deter many golfers from enjoying their round. Yes things were a bit sloppy on a couple of holes but no damage was done the day you played and as you mentioned the pace of play was great because of this decision.
2nd - Yes the greens were aerated the Sunday night prior to your round. They were top dressed with sand twice to fill in the holes as well as possible. The greens had been cut and rolled as well. They may not have been extremely fast or as smooth as possible, but they certainly weren't "Plinko" style. We began our "Fall Rates" that week - so Green Fees were at a $23 discount. Anyone that contacted us to book a tee time that week were notified of the green aeration. I am sorry you weren't aware of this prior. Many people also called in to ask if our greens were aerated and we openly told them they were. It is difficult to notify people of aeration online but that is certainly something we can look into in the future.
I am sorry you didn't find the condition of the course up to your standards, but we did have over 150 golfers play golf that day and we did have a couple customers express mild concern over how wet a few of the holes were. Aeration is a necessary evil, however, because of it we are able to keep our course in the best shape possible year after year. As stated earlier - because of the aeration - we began our Fall Rates earlier in order to discount green fees due to course conditions.
I hope you get a chance to play Steeple Chase again in the future as we feel it is a fun, fair, and challenging golf experience with exceptional course conditions.
Thank You again for taking the time to review.
