Good Course. Early Season
Weather was supposed to be nice so wanted to get out there. Course was in surprisingly good shape for such early season. Nothing against the course/club....it was very hard to tell what the course is truly like because it was so early in the season. But...based on my experience, I would play there again.
Course Great, Staff Not
Beautiful course, great gps. No practice range, so hit balls at Countryside down the street. Only two hitting bays into nets that are in awful shape. Staff is very unfriendly, so I will not go back unless it is a
great deal.
Challenging course that is in great shape for a fall round
I had never played at Steeple Chase before but had played at the neighboring Countryside courses multiple times. I'm sorry that I spent so much time and money over there and not at this course. My biggest "problem" with the course is the practice area is almost nonexistent. There is no range but they have some nets set up that you can hit into. There is a large practice green but I did not see a short game practice area for pitching. If you are going to go to the course to practice, go to Countryside with their range, short game area, and multiple practice greens. If you are going to the course to play, go to Steeple Chase. There is no comparison when it comes to the course itself.
The course is in excellent condition for it being the middle of October. From tee to green, I do not have any criticisms about the condition of the course itself. The rough was, well, rough but I don't remember hitting off of any hard pan all day. The greens were smooth and very fast but fair. The practice green actually gives a very good representation of how the greens roll on the course. If your approach ends up above the hole, you're going to have a dicey putt that will pick up a lot of speed along the way.
That was probably my favorite part about the course. You have to play a "smart" game here as you can't just hit driver off of every tee and go flag hunting on each and every hole with your approach shots. The greens are well protected with bunkers and sometimes water. While there are not a lot of forced carries, water does come into play on 10 of the holes. There are two par 3's that are very visually daunting with a forced carry with water almost up to the front edge of the greens. The carts have GPS in them to assist with the distances to hazards and greens. I was also impressed that the GPS actually had the exact distance to the pin and not to just the center of the green. You will need it as there are plenty of blind shots around this course. The 18th hole is a prime example as it is a par 5 that is a true golf hole. You cannot see the green from the tee box as it dog legs to the left. Depending on your tee shot, you may have a second blind shot for your lay-up. The shot into the green is a forced carry over water and if you end up on the wrong side of the green, it will be a 3 putt. Be thrilled if you end up with par on this hole to end the round. I feel like the more you play this course, the better and better it will get.
For a Sunday morning, pace of play was amazing. I was part of a two-some that got paired up with another two-some. The starter on the first tee was on top of things making sure everyone got out on time. We had to wait to tee off on the second, third, and tenth tees to tee off but that was it. We got our round finished in approx 4 hours. The GPS in the carts also does a good job of letting you know if you are on pace or falling behind.
The bar/patio on the clubhouse has a great view over the water. The food was good and they have a great selection of beers and alcohol.
Overall, I was very happy with my experience even though I didn't shoot as well as I could have. I will definitely be back to take another shot at it next year and will recommend it to people who are looking for a picturesque, challenging course in the north/northwest suburbs of Chicago.
Course in good shape
First time playing and I would play again. Great Fall golf pace as we played as a twosome in just under 3 1/2 hrs. Course in good shape
Great Value
The course was in very good condition and the pace of play was excellent. We played on a Saturday morning and never had to wait on the group in front of us.
How does this course get less than 4 stars?
Steeple Chase is a beautiful course with a lot of great and challenging holes. There were a few greens and tee boxes that could use some attention, but the overall experience was 5 star. I will definitely add this course to my rotation.
Couldn't even finish.....that slow
The course is good. However the pace of play due to the park district trying to make as much money as they can makes this course horrible !!!!!
They put in beginners (or so it seems) of twosomes in at the 10th hole, so the back nine was a train wreck. We were three deep waiting to tee off and no one knows how to play ready golf. We left after the 14th hole and went to have drinks at the Irish Milll, a great bar, as I couldn't think of spending any more time or money at the course.
If your a fan of great courses, this is a must play
Having been in the golf industry for thirty years, assistant superintendent, and superintendent, it was a true pleasure to have the chance to enjoy, this outstanding facility. When looking for a course, that when hour finished playing, you walk away saying, wow and I'll come back, this is the course to play. Conditions are second to none. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this course.
Like the variety of shot selection needed to play.
Course was in great shape and some of the jokes need to be thought out before teeing it up. Shot placement on holes like 18 are very important.
Steeple Chase
I have played at steeple chase for years. I play all over the northern suburbs and found the course to be in its best condition this year. Greens were consistent throughout and fairways and rough in excellent condition. There are tee boxes for all levels. Discounts to Mundelein residents a plus but would prefer it be a little more affordable for non residents ($5 less would be perfect in relation to other courses in the area). Would highly recommended playing a few times a year!
Excellent Value and Great Features
What a great gem still. It is hard to believe that this is a park district course. A wonderful set up for all skill levels, Great staff.
Excellent
Very great conditions... But unfortunately the pace of play wasn't good - a threesome in front of me as I played as a single I caught up to them three or four times would even allow me to play through even know there was another threesome in front of them otherwise. The food there is good prices are awesome greens were in fantastic shape as well except for the pace of play I probably give it a five overall !!
Be realistic on slow play
When you start a whole hole behind a group and never see them and the people behind you are not ever waiting on you, there should not be three marshal visits telling you to speed up and close up the gap because you are holding up play. The gap was created by the start times, not our pace of play. We started with an open hole in front of us. My group got very upset at being pushed until we started waiting on the group ahead of us for the last four holes. My partners told me they don't want me to book Steeplechase any more, because this type of oversight makes play less fun. Ordinarily on a Saturday morning when play is almost always backed up we welcome a marshal lighting a fire under a slow group but we are not that group. A marshal should be aware when a gap is caused by starting times, not slow players. At least two guys in this group will not ever play here again.
Nice layout
Hole positions were very difficult this day, some almost unfair due to the huge breaks. Interesting layout and scenery, especially back nine.
Overlooked gem
Public course with a country club feel. Great layout with mix of carries and challenging shots. Can play long. so pick your tees.
Beautiful course and fair challenge
This course if very beautiful. It is well maintained and for the average golfer it is fair with wide fairways and some challenging shots. Some par 3s are over water and the finish hole is a very nice and well laid out par 5. The greens are fast and there is plenty of trouble in the rough to get into if you are not accurate with your shot making.
