Scenic Gem In the South Suburbs
The Sanctuary near Lockport, IL is a great hidden gem. It's a quasi links style course with a layout that's challenging enough, yet remains fun. The white tees are suitable to seniors and advanced female players or beginner men. The blues will challenge most men, especially on a windy day. The naturally scenary is wonderful, with no houses in site and few side by side fairways. Conditions of the fairways and greens were excellent. The clubhouse and patio were nice for the 19th hole hangout experience. This is a very good value course, especially if you find a deal on Golf Now. Having played other municipally run courses, this is amongst the best in Chicagoland. Should I have said that? I might bring out more golfers to this typically uncrowded find of a course.
Excellence
This course is always in great condition and the staff are always friendly and accommodating.
Great value
I booked a hot deal through golf now and received great value for the price. All the carts have GPS and the course conditions were good, especially for a public course getting a lot if play.
The pace of play was slow as it took over 4 hours for a twosome on a Tuesday. We waited on almost every hole on the back nine. This was due to our group only having two and a foursome several groups ahead.
Nice variety
Part of the course is lynx style and part is wooded. Plenty of variety with water and sand to boot.
Accuracy more important than distance
There isn't a great deal of variety among the holes, but the scenery is beautiful and the course offers plenty of challenges for the amateur. The fairways are narrow and accuracy is the premium here, sacrifice distance for accuracy and hit some long irons of the tee where appropriate. Lots of tall fescue grass is strategically placed to gobble up your ball, and there are plenty of water hazards as well. All in all a fun place to play, and is priced reasonably!
Too Slow
It was absurd how long it took for me to finish my round. It was a Thursday afternoon and it took me almost five hours to finish. I had to wait on every shot and the people in front of us had no idea how to play golf. There were no rangers out there to try and speed up the pace at all. I thought I'd give the course another shot, because this has happened in the past but it was the same all over again. I will not be back there to play again, absolutely horrible.
Usually in great shape and very good value
I play at the Sanctuary usually once or twice a week, Very friendly staff and treatment by employees is great. One of the best values in South Suburbs
challenging fairways
Fairways are challenging to hit. Stay straight some challenging holes nice par 3s. Pace is good and very good course management
Sanctuary is in nice shape
Except for the tee boxes the course was in really nice shape and the greens were true no bumps and extremely fast. Hadn't played this place in a couple of years and my opinion has improved however if this course is crowded pace of play can and will be a problem. Folks in the clubhouse very friendly and our group had a nice day. If you're over a 10 handicap please play the white tees on this course as there are lots of challenging tee shots from the blue/black tees with lot's of water, etc.
Great Value
I purchased a discounted round on golf now and it was more than worth it. This is a great course and in great shape. The staff was friendly and checking in was a breeze. Highly recommend.
nice course
this course is a test of your ability to play smart.
Good test
Great course. Good mix of driving and placement off the tee. Accuracy off the tee very important. $43 on Golf now. Can't beat that
the course has a great layout, there are some outstanding holes
the course is playing great at this time of year, greens are fast as lighting. nice tricky holes.
Decent course. Hey....it's April!
Course was in decent shape considering we had one of the worst winters on record. Narrow fairways and 30MPH wind gusts make a round tough to enjoy. Remember.....it's better than snow!
Surprisingly challenging
It is a wide open course but with enough danger areas to fool you into going for the big shot rather than the strategic play. Enjoyed holes 14-15 greatly in the wooded area, although my scorecard would argue differently.
Challenging and Nice Layout
I was impressed by the nice layout of this course. It's pretty. It's also pretty tough - narrow fairways and lots and lots of fescue. The staff was friendly and helpful.
The course was pretty crowded, but we still finished in 4hrs, including a brief stop at the turn for a hot dog and beer.
It was my first time there, and I would definitely go back, so long as the greens fees are in my price range.
First day out
First day out yeah! Great course today, pace of play got a little slow but overall well taken care of beautiful play.
Fun and Challenging course
This course is wide open with barely any trees until you reach the back nine. For the time of year (Lots of rain) the course drains very well. We got a cart, but were only allowed on the paths (Which was fine) Greens were a bit bumpy, but that is to be expected this early in the year. My only con was no matter where you were on the course there were tons of mosquitoes which are around all year. They don't bite, but there a nuisance.
Overall my round was great and got a great deal on Golf Now.
Like the course. Played in Nov. Great price from Golf Now.
It is winter golf. Played in less than 3 hours. Two balls played on every holes. Nice course, Great value!!! High rough is cut down for winter play.
