Where Have All the Fairways Gone?
I have played Wilmette for many years and was excited for the renovation in 2014. I love what they did to improve all aspects of the course. But there have been consistent problems maintaining the fairways in even moderately good condition. After a promising spring, 2018 is no different. The fairways are hard, bare in many spots, crusty in others, and rarely lush. Not sure what the problem is, but I think I’ll make this course a once in a while stop rather than my ‘go to’ golf course.
Horrible shape
Been playing here for 20 years. Worst shape ever. Greens are fine. Fairways are horrendous.
Solid golf course
I highly recommend this golf course. It was in the best condition that I have ever seen it and I have been playing this course for 25 years or so. I know they had a lot of renovations done to this course and it paid off I believe. The fairways looked pure and the greens were rolling true. Very good time! I played early and that helped because we did not have to wait that much.
Very somethings
Course is a lower end public course, sorry but true. Terrible maintenance.
This Golf Course is currently in the best condition it has ever been! The fairways and tee boxes provide perfect hitting surfaces due to the tight root structure. The aprons to the greens are cut tight to allow for either a putt or a chip up to the hole-on every hole. The rough is thick yet kept at a playable 3" height. The greens roll fast and true and hold most any shot. Plenty of undulation to challenge the best of putters. Strategically placed bunkers keep you thinking placement off the tee. The grounds crew keeps the edges neat and trimmed and I've noticed the traps are groomed daily.
The improved drainage and regulated cart use is really paying off. The golf staff was very professional and polite as well. To the Head Golf Professional, Superintendent and General Manager, job well done guys! Thank you
The only downside is the restaurant. Unfortunate because it's hard to beat the setting overlooking the 18th green. Great spot for a cocktail-if they poured even a moderately good pour. The beer is cold however.
The new management will need to be replaced before I bring the family back. Servers were good but while we were there the management micromanaged the servers at almost every turn. At one point the New Manager interrupted our conversation with our server to speak about another table not having water, yet other servers were standing at the ready with water pitchers close by.
The Father's Day buffet food was unappealing to look at and pricey. Most of the food was not hot. Plus it tasted like it would be better suited for a boutique hotel buffet rather than the hearty family friendly food you would expect to find at your local golf club-as it once was.
I like to play this course
I bought the season pass to play weekdays, and I think that it offers a very good value. The condition of the course in general is above average. The fairways are in great shape and the greens are some of the best in the area. The staff at the pro shop goes out of their way to help in any way they can to make your experience a good one. The grill is also a good place to get a bite after your round.
A Renovation Gone (largely) Wrong
The renovation completed over the past few years was absolutely necessary from a turf management standpoint - and with respect to providing better playing conditions, it was certainly a huge success. Unfortunately, it failed miserably at preserving the course's charm and character. Many of the quirky features that made Wilmette an interesting replay time and time again have been replaced by rather generic fairway contours and green complexes that lack nuance and variety. Gone are the quirky greens at the 4th, 10th, 14th, etc. etc. Gone is the awkward blind tee shot into the 2nd green, and gone is what was arguably the best Par 3 on the course: the 12th. How many golf courses have a bunkerless Par 3 that scares you?
I still like the course...and it's usually in great shape and the staff is very friendly. Pace of play is no worse than anywhere else on the Northshore. It just seems like the hired the wrong people for the job.
Updates finally take hold
Recently played Wilmette. Have played there many times over the years. Was disappointed last year with fairway conditions. All is fixed and in great condition this year. Definitely recommend it now.
Classy golf
Playing Wilmette is always a treat, great staff, new greens and fairways, competitive for all handicaps. It is like playing in the country while being close to the city. Food , beverages, and patio are also top shelf.
When it’s on, it’s on!
After the course was redesigned, there were many features and nuances added to make it challenging for better players. The conditions are really good now and when the greens are cut short, par is a good score on a lot of the holes.
Pace of play...
I’ll begin by stating I know it was Memorial Day but my experience is that on Mondays of holiday weekends courses open up. Not so much on this day... Ranger was out but couldn’t alleviate any issues. Not sure I’ll be back... it was a ridiculous experience, I had so many issues I could write a book, between pace of play, drunks, drugs, families, teens and deep cuts.
Great condition!
There have been issues due to drainage in the past which led to poor playing conditions. The superintendent has done a full 180. Wilmette is in superb shape, the fairways are terrific (bluegrass, fun to play off). The greens were re-done a couple years ago and have grown in beautifully. They are probably running 10 on the stimp and are as smooth as can be. The last problem was always the bunkers. I can vouch that in May 2018 they are consistent, with the right amount of sand, and great to play out of. Overall--if you had a less than satisfactory experience in the past, those days are over. This is a FUN course, in great shape, and a bargain compared to similar courses. Go give it a try, you will be impressed with the work of the superintendant.
layout keeps your interest, greens were aerated but were still fast & smooth & true- surprisingly so. Fairways & rough were not anywhere in good playing condition. Course was only worth what I paid in greenfees.
I’m back!!!!
Wilmette is a great new (4 years) layout that had some turf issues last year, but the condition this spring, despite the lousy weather is very good.
"We’re not quite sure what you’re referring to regarding the course conditions." Wilmette management has responded several times to negative comments about fairway grass conditions. They must be in denial. I believe every fairway on the course has some section that is either roped off or sections of "grass" (dirt with hope of grass) that are not very playable. Holes 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, and 15 are significant sections in bad shape. I appreciate that the grounds crew may be working hard, but that is akin to a "participation award"---fairway grass conditions are not good.
