Good city course
I've played several city courses around the state, with Wicker being as much "city' as most of them due to it's urban location, I'd say it's very favorable, offers fair rates, and is nestled beside a bustling part setting. Columbus also has a nice course in the middle of their city. Got to keep those leaves cleaned up better though...it's only July.
Good Value, but you get what you pay for.
Starting the review with saying I paid $14 total (golfnow fee and taxes)(hot deal).
This course is about a mile from my house and I have played it 2-3 times each year for the last 3 years.
Overall the facility is okay. It has a range, so that is good. The course has changed over the last couple of years with the violent storms of the last couple fall seasons. 3 years ago, the fairways were lined with huge trees. But now there are A LOT of trees removed because they fell during storms. You can see the stumped remains. They have planted some new trees, but they are 10' high seedlings and will take at least 5 years to even be a factor while playing.
The course is very flat and basic. There are some very small streams that criss-cross the course which provide some challenges.
Very few bunkers on each hole. Some holes had none, and the most is probably 2 on a couple holes.
There is some water to navigate, but really only comes into play with a very bad miss.
Entire course was pretty dry. Had trouble getting a more flexible plastic tee into the ground a couple times. Greens and fairways were very, very firm. I chunked about 4 approach shots (8 irons) that landed 20 yds short, but they rolled onto the green somehow. Anything that actually landed on the green, rolled over.
The main annoyance was the leaves. The course had A LOT of leaves laying all around. And I mean A LOT. It felt like we were playing in September. There were a lot of times we had to move about 15 leaves to get a clear putting line on the green. Or a couple times we had to search for ball that was just off the fairway and had to kick through leaves to help find the ball. It was a little frustrating. You would have thought that the leaves would have been mowed up or gathered up 8 months after they fell from the previous year?
As stated in first line though, I paid $14 with cart. So it was good for that price. If you pay more than $25 or so, I would go somewhere else in the area.
Lost on the fairway!
This is an ok place to pick up a quick 18. The bartender was rather rude as I was buying beverages for the course. The first tee was stacked with five groups at my "reserved tee time." All this could be overlooked. The absolute worst part was the course itself. I have never golfed somewhere before that you could lose your ball on the fairway. There was so much debris on the course. The course itself could have played nice it's a very straight course but when you're spending ten minutes looking for your ball through the debris on the fairway each time it cuts into your fun and focus.
Pace of play
My colleague and I have played wicker several times before, but this was probably our last. We got a $13 hot deal, but took over 4 hours to play a course that should barely take 3. The twosome in front of us was taking 8-12 strokes apiece per hole, and the ranger had to tell him to move aside for us. A guy playing another hole nearly took our heads off with an errant shot but couldn't even yell fore. There are enough courses for under $20 in NW indiana that I am pretty confident we will not return to wicker.
well played
Staff was friendly, course was very well maintained, save for a few holes hindered by construction still. A few greens were dried out , but nothing nature can't fix. First time playing there in a few years. Definitely worth the money .
Friendly setting and friendly staff
Condition is good and fun golf course in the park.
Rude staff
This had to be the worst round I have ever played. They allowed me to book a tee time right after there was a scramble of the regulars at the course and a group of 12 walking seniors. I was told that it was not a good time to golf and I replied that I booked on-line and it was pre-paid. I asked if I could get a rain check and was told NO. I jumped around the course trying to get my round in, but was so frustrated from waiting that I only golfed 7 holes.
Great shape
Course is in great shape. Staff is very friendly. Course seems to get better every time I'm there.
Great course.
Great course to play, well maintained. Definitely will get a chance to use all of your clubs, has some nice long 500+ yard holes. No need to worry about "proper golf attire", able to get a round in after work without having to worry about changing clothes. I will be playing this 1 again.
Wicker Park is a good play!
Course was in decent shape. Busy. Had to wait behind another group several times. Some interesting holes with challenges.
Great course - Great Value
Book on a hot deal. Beautiful day. Very well kept course. Super nice staff as well as other players. Nice course to cut your golf teeth on.
straight forward course
Course was in good shape, fairly straight forward, and the staff was terrific.
Always Feel Welcome
I have played this course four times this year and have found it to be a great experience in both course conditions and customer service.
It seems the last few seasons the availability of being able to refresh yourself with a snack or beverage while playing has been neglected by most courses. Not so here at Wicker; even on weekdays late in the afternoon their cart beverage person has been available throughout the round.
Also, the whole staff has been friendly and accommodating upon every visit! The greens are in great shape and a pleasure to putt on.
Beautiful scenery
I always enjoy playing here. Quite challenging from any tee box. Greens were very quick.
it was dry!
there's been a lot of rain here, many inches over multiple days and the course was extremely dry; we were quite pleased!
The issue was, the water cows were all missing.
Having just played 18 on Saturday; we were surprised to find the cows removed.
Had the beverage cart been a tad quicker...
OVERALL VERY HAPPY!!
We will play there again!
It was what we expected
Good conditions, slow pace as usual, staff allowed a five some to go out in front of us on a Friday afternoon. Course was already jammed enough. 5-10 minute wait on every shot and about 15 minutes per tee.
Cotton wood and dandelions
So much cotton wood like playing in two inches of snow. Fairways ok but just off loaded with dandelions! Cut the grass use some weed killer .
decent course for the money
The course is in decent shape this year they are doing some minor fixes due to the construction they had on the property but for the money you can't beat it go play and have a good time
Average at best
Nothing special, muni course with no pro shop or clubhouse.
