Nice people
Staff very friendly. Only complaint might be leaves everywhere. But overall. Nice place
Fine course
Nice course to play for a challenge!
good old course
Wicker Memorial, a municipal course, is well maintained, with tricky greens and a nice variety of challenging holes. It has been around for about 90 years, and its tree lined fairways have taken a beating due to the latest beetle infestion. Wicker has lost 100's of their giant old trees, but hundreds more have been planted for future generations of golfers to curse. The entire course is very well maintained, I highly recommend to any and all levels of players.
Great course for the money
loved it, it was very dry but we have not had much rain.
Good value , nice greens
The grass is finally growing in on fairways
The greens are nice and a lot of trees have been removed making it more forgiving to your average golfer . Will defenitely come back .
Round played in 1st week of May 2016
Wicker Park suffers from the rain.
The day we went it was cart path only due to the prior rains 2 days ago. It tends to always be real swampy.
The rangers make sure your cart path only all the time so it was difficult to keep pace of play things started to get slow out there.
The course held up its end. Was impressed in 2016 that it wasn't as bad as years past.
They also cut down some fairline trees between the 2nd 17th hole. It made it easier than previous years.
Golf now special was 15 with cart. Worth it all day.
Fun in the sun at Wicker Park Golf Course.
I had a great time on a beautiful 80 degree day at Wicker Park. My only hiccup, my golf cart stopped working after I loaded my clubs on the cart. This is one of the better public courses that I have played at so far this season. Bring your range finder to get accurate distances from tee to hole. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Great value when you book tee times via Last Minute Golf App.
Great greens. Course well kept.
Wicker Park is a very well kept course. I've played there earlier in the year and noticed just recently the amount of work that is constantly put into the course.
Greens are very well kept. Ground isn't too hard on the tees. Great amount of challenging par 4's. Perfect amount of water and sand traps in my opinion. I will always look to go to this course. Staff is very kind too.
No rough play
After all the rain the course had a few water spots and the rough wasn't cut, making it difficult if you didn't find the fairway . Overall the course was good
Crowded
I took advantage of a hot deal and arrived for my tee time only to find out 2 ladies were also scheduled for the same tee time as well. The Marshall made us play as a group even though we didn't know each other. Was moving at a good pace until the 5th hole where the was a log jam due to a group that showed up without a reservation playing a best ball scramble! How does that happen?! Not only that they had 6-7 golfers in a couple of the groups. Last 13 holes were frustrating to say the least. Not normally my experience when playing here.
Public course
I know that this is a public course but that is no excuse lack of cleanliness of the course. This is the second time I've played this course and as much as I think this is a good challenging course for the beginner & moderate golfer...I as much dislike the maintenence of this course. There was tree branches of all sizes in the fairways & on the greens plus the amount of leaves was out of control. Use a blower why don't you!!
Basic and Crowded
My brother and I are very new to golf. We've played a little over a half-dozen rounds, so feel free to take this review with a grain of salt.
We booked an 11:04 tee time on a Tuesday. Like I said, we're new to this, so we play outside of peak hours so we don't hold up more serious players. The course was gridlocked. There were groups in front of us hitting as soon as groups in front of them cleared the area, and groups behind us doing the same. At 11, on a Tuesday! Can't imagine what a Sunday afternoon looks like!
Crowds aside, the course was fairly simple. Most holes are straight shots, and the majority feel like a mirror of the last. It didn't feel like there was really a signature hole. Every other course has at least one that makes you happy just to tee up on. Nothing like that here.
Oh, and somehow there were leaves EVERYWHERE, in the middle of summer.
There is a beverage cart though!
Good city course
I've played several city courses around the state, with Wicker being as much "city' as most of them due to it's urban location, I'd say it's very favorable, offers fair rates, and is nestled beside a bustling part setting. Columbus also has a nice course in the middle of their city. Got to keep those leaves cleaned up better though...it's only July.
Good Value, but you get what you pay for.
Starting the review with saying I paid $14 total (golfnow fee and taxes)(hot deal).
This course is about a mile from my house and I have played it 2-3 times each year for the last 3 years.
Overall the facility is okay. It has a range, so that is good. The course has changed over the last couple of years with the violent storms of the last couple fall seasons. 3 years ago, the fairways were lined with huge trees. But now there are A LOT of trees removed because they fell during storms. You can see the stumped remains. They have planted some new trees, but they are 10' high seedlings and will take at least 5 years to even be a factor while playing.
The course is very flat and basic. There are some very small streams that criss-cross the course which provide some challenges.
Very few bunkers on each hole. Some holes had none, and the most is probably 2 on a couple holes.
There is some water to navigate, but really only comes into play with a very bad miss.
Entire course was pretty dry. Had trouble getting a more flexible plastic tee into the ground a couple times. Greens and fairways were very, very firm. I chunked about 4 approach shots (8 irons) that landed 20 yds short, but they rolled onto the green somehow. Anything that actually landed on the green, rolled over.
The main annoyance was the leaves. The course had A LOT of leaves laying all around. And I mean A LOT. It felt like we were playing in September. There were a lot of times we had to move about 15 leaves to get a clear putting line on the green. Or a couple times we had to search for ball that was just off the fairway and had to kick through leaves to help find the ball. It was a little frustrating. You would have thought that the leaves would have been mowed up or gathered up 8 months after they fell from the previous year?
As stated in first line though, I paid $14 with cart. So it was good for that price. If you pay more than $25 or so, I would go somewhere else in the area.
Lost on the fairway!
This is an ok place to pick up a quick 18. The bartender was rather rude as I was buying beverages for the course. The first tee was stacked with five groups at my "reserved tee time." All this could be overlooked. The absolute worst part was the course itself. I have never golfed somewhere before that you could lose your ball on the fairway. There was so much debris on the course. The course itself could have played nice it's a very straight course but when you're spending ten minutes looking for your ball through the debris on the fairway each time it cuts into your fun and focus.
Pace of play
My colleague and I have played wicker several times before, but this was probably our last. We got a $13 hot deal, but took over 4 hours to play a course that should barely take 3. The twosome in front of us was taking 8-12 strokes apiece per hole, and the ranger had to tell him to move aside for us. A guy playing another hole nearly took our heads off with an errant shot but couldn't even yell fore. There are enough courses for under $20 in NW indiana that I am pretty confident we will not return to wicker.
well played
Staff was friendly, course was very well maintained, save for a few holes hindered by construction still. A few greens were dried out , but nothing nature can't fix. First time playing there in a few years. Definitely worth the money .
Friendly setting and friendly staff
Condition is good and fun golf course in the park.
Rude staff
This had to be the worst round I have ever played. They allowed me to book a tee time right after there was a scramble of the regulars at the course and a group of 12 walking seniors. I was told that it was not a good time to golf and I replied that I booked on-line and it was pre-paid. I asked if I could get a rain check and was told NO. I jumped around the course trying to get my round in, but was so frustrated from waiting that I only golfed 7 holes.
