Fair pricing but horribly maintained
We decided to play this course because a $39 round w/ cart is tough to beat, however the course we felt was horribly maintained. There was a couple of nice holes, but my goodness do they need to mow it more often. There were several instances in which we saw exactly where our tee shots landed in the rough - and couldn’t find it. Lost way too many golf balls that should not have been tough at all to find. Not sure when the greens were last cut because those were the slowest greens I’ve ever played on. The fair way was the length of the rough in some places and the tee boxes were a nightmare.
Challenging Layout
Tee boxes and fairways were a little beat up, but that’s to be expected early in the season. Majority of greens were in great shape. Course layout is tight. Don’t expect to be able to hit driver on every par 4/5. Great course to get some work in on your long irons. Bring an extra sleeve of golf balls.
Letting it go
Walden CC is the most convenient course for me to play being only 10 mins from where I live. Over the past few year the course has taken a turn for the worst, at least in my opinion. I have a very simply rule to where I’d play golf: if the greens are in great shape, it a good course for me. WCC used to have greens comparable to most of the high-end golf courses in DMV area. However, in the last few years their greens have progressively gotten worse, I don’t think they rolled the green once all of last season. The rest of the course has never been anything to write home about, and it still isn’t. I will continue to play there because of the convenience and it’s challenging layout. I think the WCC grounds crew needs to get the course back to where it was in 2017 and 2018.
Aerated Greens
Walden aerated their green, but the greens still rolled pretty well. I can’t wait for them to grow in.
I’ve always enjoyed playing at Walden CC, and happy to call it my home course.
My Home Course
I consider Walden CC my home course since it’s less than 10 mins from where I live.I play here more than anywhere else. Walden is a short tight course which makes it pretty challenging. The fairway and rough are rarely in good shape, but the greens are almost always in great shape. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. I enjoy playing at Walden because it’s a challenging course. If you want to sharpen your iron play, Walden is a good course for that.
An Interesting Layout...give it a try.
Walden has a unique layout for this area.
I live nearby, but don't get a chance to play Walden too often. They jacked up their rates about 2 years ago (COVID maybe), and there's no way I'd pay $70 here! There are too many wet spots, I think 5 holes outside of the par 3s are cart path only, and the local residents that actually have memberships there aren't the most fun to golf with if you get paired up. They act like it's THEIR course and you're playing Troon North.
If you can get past the price and the nonsense, the course layout is different for this area. You can't go Driver just because you want to; you'll get penalized.
I usually only play Walden now when I catch a good deal on GN. I would never pay their posted rack rate.
In all, a fun little long course, but I wish they went back to the old pricing chart.
Bad layout, bad conditions.
Tee boxes scruffy and overgrown. Rough patchy. Asphalt bunkers. Whatever. But it’s also just a badly laid out golf course.
