Heron Lakes Golf Course was opened for public play in 1972. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and is located off of I-5 next to the Portland International Raceway. It was named after the Blue Herons that inhabit the many lakes and ponds around the course. There are two courses, the Great Blue and the Green Back.

The Great Blue has been rated for years as the most difficult golf course in the Portland Area. It is a links style course with water, tall rough, narrow fairways, and sand everywhere. Most fairways on the Great Blue narrow to small greens that roll and pitch in several directions.

Monday March madness golf

We were crazy to play today, between the soggy fairways and the cold wind it was not really fun. The goose poop was everywhere but that’s nothing new. The greens were in good condition when we finally made it to them. It can only get better and drier! Played pretty quickly which was great.

Portland oh Portland

Solid course. Everything I read prior to playing said the only thing to watch for was the Pace of Play.

I looked up courses to play and found this one at 9:30, was on the course at 10:25. Got done at 3:00. Ooof. I got partnered with 3 gentlemen. 2 knew each other, the other was a random like myself. Everyone was super chill, but golf is a hard sport and there are levels to how frustrating it can be for each individual player.

Front 9 took us 2:45.

I enjoyed all of the angularity. Course was wet but in good condition. We were consistently behind most of the day.

Back 9 we breezed through.

Dropped two of 4 players.

Took us an Hour and half. Yep.

The back was tough in its own weird Heron ways. So many drop offs into ponds and blackberry bushes. Tons of fun to get depressed about. Made it out pretty good.

Long story short. If you are worried about Pace of Play, pay higher rates or go earlier. The Marshal was doing his best. But golf is golf.

golf now 2 stars

I'm giving this a 2 star review because Golf now has emailed me 6 times asking for a review.

Service with Golf Now keeps going down, though the course is great.

Challenging course

This was a challenging course that I will definitely revisit in the summer when it is a little less wet. Enjoyed the geese and nature.

Great course. Too many geese.

I usually play The Great Blue at least 20 times per year. It is a great course in the summer time but the migration of geese to the property this time of year makes the course nearly unplayable. If not for the geese poop, the conditions of the fairways and greens were excellent for the middle of winter.

Played on a Sunday. Arrived late and they still got us on. Great muni track. Back nine is definitely better then the front. Good value for the price. Track is definitely used and abused from the weekend warriors and the maintenance team does all they can sand traps could use some love.

Stunning course

Beautiful course...great layout...you can see a little bit of Chambers bay in this course...with the bunkering and contours. Pace of play was good for the first 8 holes. A four hour pace turned into 5 and a half hours. Also the cart girl showed up on hole 1 and 16...really. oh and there are tons of Heron throughout the course.

Fun on the Blue Course

Heron Lakes Great Blue course was fun to play with a set of challenges. Many sand traps and water on many of the holes, creates challenges but also helps you to focus on the fairway and staying out of the hazards. Recommend you play here and take the challenge.
