Heron Lakes Golf Club - Great Blue Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Course was opened for public play in 1972. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and is located off of I-5 next to the Portland International Raceway. It was named after the Blue Herons that inhabit the many lakes and ponds around the course. There are two courses, the Great Blue and the Green Back.
The Great Blue has been rated for years as the most difficult golf course in the Portland Area. It is a links style course with water, tall rough, narrow fairways, and sand everywhere. Most fairways on the Great Blue narrow to small greens that roll and pitch in several directions.

That’s a green. Notice how my ball did not roll, but bounce every two feet. Photo submitted by u790885909 on 10/09/2024

Decent Course - Rude Staff
I've played Heron Lakes a few times and never been treated well by the staff. Pitty...the course is fun and would play it more often if the staff weren't in such a hurry to get people away from them. Customer service is dead at Heron Lakes.
Great course
Had a great round of Golf and would highly recommend the course. In my case I was glad I had an extra sleeve or two of balls.
Golfing with good friends
The Great Blue course is more challenging than the Greenback course. I would have liked for the sand traps to have a little more sand and raked. Some of the machines used for maintenance had gone through the traps also. Otherwise, the course is in good shape and fun to play.
really nice
tees=A fairways=A rough=B sand=B greens=B+ nice variety... good conditions
The Great Blue
Too bad it was rainy yesterday but the course is in good shape and the green were really rolling nice.
Great Value
Great value and greens are great, good challenge for any golfer and appreciate the variety of holes.
na
Pace of play was terrible.
3-4 groups waiting on some holes.
Great Blue Heron Lakes
Lush vegetation and water = very scenic. Course and greens in good condition.
Best deal in the Portland area!!
We booked a 4-some on GolfNow for a 3:30 tee-time for $15/person!! Given how well this course drains and the pristine condition of the greens, Heron Lakes is by far the best round for your money in the North Portland area!!
SLOW!!!
Usually, one can expect a little slower pace of play on city courses, it seems. But, my last outing was terrible! S-L-O-W play two groups ahead and REAL S-L-O-W pace for the group in front of us. I know it's early in the season, but "practicing" with 6 swings before every shot, then crawling back to the bag or cart, ,only to stop and look for balls in the water or trees, is a bit much! Doubt I'll play The Great Blue again! As for the course---if you're going to have "sand traps", you might want to buy some sand to put in them!
Rain or Sun, Heron Lakes shines
The weather forecast for the day was iffy, and that probably led many people to cancel their plans to play. Too bad for them, after a couple sprinkles on the first two holes, it was a pleasant late winter/early spring day. There were only a few people on the course, so we played at a comfortable pace. Despite heavy downpours the day and evening before, the course was in fine shape. The greens were in particularly great form. Kudos are due to the staff: the clubhouse people were warm and friends, and the course was in amazing shape, given the season.
Unique Golf Destination
Heron Lakes-
The Greenback is really beautiful with it's nature. Lots of trees and wildlife. In the summertime you will loose balls, if you don't hit the fairways. Great dogleys front and back. 14th -17 is amazing. The Great Blue is longer and harder in my opinion. Don't forget to look at the huge fish in the ponds. Also Heron Lakes attracts a lot of those guys with 400.00 drivers that cant hit straight. They have no short game as well as no Golf Etiquette. Lots of testosterone around those tracks. They're fun to beat...
Have fun!
1st time on the Greenback
I really enjoyed the Greenback. I had heard a lot about it but this was my first time to play it. It seems like most people overestimate the easiness of the Greenback. Compared to the Great Blue it is easier, less water hazards. There are trees, so if your drives don't find the fairway, you may have tree issues. Since it was January we played the white tees. I think the back tees would really add to the challenge of the course. The greens were large and in good condition. They were very fair, no crazy undulations. Since its been a dryer than normal winter, I can't comment on how the course drains. Overall I was very happy with the Greenback and I can't wait to play it this summer.
Great course close to home
For a great course close to my home and in the heart of the portland area that is heavily played, they do a great job keeping the course in great shape. It was a dry, clear, sunny winter day. Greens were fairly fast but in good shape. Fairways were also in good shape. A good value for $18.
Scenic and challenging
First time ever playing the HL complex. Walked the Great Blue. Fairways and tees in pretty good shape. Greens hold but are super-bumpy probably due to fall and early morning freezing. If you don't make your first putt, pick it up and go to next hole. walked in about 4.5 hours in group of 4.
It's a good layout with a good mix of holes (short, long, wide, narrow, straight, dogleg, etc.). I played from white tees because others wanted to. Would love to play from blues (6500 yds).
wonderful wildlife to see
had a great time, saw more wildlife than expected in a city course. brought a friend for his first time there and he found it wonderful. easy level walking course and very dry for this time of year. greens fast and smooth and blown clean of leaves. while playing we were treated to seeing not only geese, ducks and herons but also received and up close look at a bald eagle
flying over the east end of the course. that was just too cool.
Links Style, Pretty Difficult
I prefer the Greenback at Heron Lakes, but the Great Blue is very nice as a Links style course. Easy to lose balls in the tall grass. Fast greens. Interesting, beautiful layout. As with the Greenback, the pace is SLOW. The courses here are very busy and people are loathe to let you play through. We always get done at dark or later since we usually golf in the afternoon.
Like Greenback Better Than Great Blue!
Greenback plays better for me. The layout is interesting and the greens are fast, but not overly. The only criticism for this course is that it is very busy. More than once we have had to wait for slow four-somes and even once a five-some that would not let us through. We usualy start in the afternoon but it seems like we never make it to the 18th hole before DARK.
Nice Course
Have not played the Great Blue for a long time and forgot how challenging it is. The course was in great shape and fun to play. Had a great time!
