Heron Lakes Golf Club - Great Blue Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Course was opened for public play in 1972. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and is located off of I-5 next to the Portland International Raceway. It was named after the Blue Herons that inhabit the many lakes and ponds around the course. There are two courses, the Great Blue and the Green Back.
The Great Blue has been rated for years as the most difficult golf course in the Portland Area. It is a links style course with water, tall rough, narrow fairways, and sand everywhere. Most fairways on the Great Blue narrow to small greens that roll and pitch in several directions.

That’s a green. Notice how my ball did not roll, but bounce every two feet. Photo submitted by u790885909 on 10/09/2024

Mud and goose poop
Probably the worst place to play right now.
The course is covered in duck and goose poop.
To make things worse there was mud all over the course from insects or something.
My Clicgear wheels were caked, not to mention my shoes were also covered in mud and goose/duck poop!
I hope no one gets sick from all this feces on the course.
Rename Geese lake
The lack of geese control has completely destroyed this golf course. It was really disgusting walking through all the geese scat that is everywhere including the greens. There is hardly any grass left around the greens and in the fairways.
Heron Lakes
It's a great course a little bit hard on the first or second hole over the water and then just great place to play I like it my favorite place to play but I usually putting green side I like it better it's a little easier
November golf?
No wind, dry fairways and goose crap galore! This the was 14th days in a row of no rain and the course was in great shape for November. The firs few holes on the blue course were covered in goose crap as well as the final two, but in between the course was playing great. Greens were recently fertilized to kill the moss? Which made for a ugly black appearance but didn’t impede putting.
Great shape!
The Blue is in great shape. Greens still were rolling good. I know there getting punched soon though. Staff was excellent. Good value and great test of your game!
Moderate difficulty; not in top condition
Fun course that’s especially suited to mid-handicap players. Two disappointments. First, the practice green was substantially slower than the greens on the course, so unsurprisingly I 3-putted the first hole, and it took me a while to recalibrate. I lost 4-5 strokes over that. Second, some of the fairways were in poor shape with large bare spots. Is that normal for September or does a maintenance investment need to be made?
Hard course with a technical layout
Overall good condition with a very technical layout. Forces you to plan your way around the course.
Quick Vacation Round
Was able to get a tee time and matched up with another traveler and played in 3.5 hours. Great scenery and some wildlife
