Black Rock Golf Course
About
Black Rock Golf Course may be one of western Maryland's newest courses but it's located near some of the country's most historic sites. Antietam Battlefield and Harper's Ferry are just a few minutes away from this scenic course. The opening holes of the layout are tucked into the Shenandoah Valley while the back nine climbs uphill, offering views that stretch across the Appalachian Mountains. The golf course has plenty of holes that will please long hitters, but mature trees and thick rough frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy. Traps protect the front of most of the greens and you'll come across dramatic undulations on some. The par-4 13th is arguably Black Rock's toughest hole. This sharp dogleg right has a massive tree to the right as well as a pond right in front of the green.

Always enjoy!
I always enjoy playing this course. Some of the fairways were a little space. The greens were in good shape. I like the layout of the course
Summer trip to Maryland
Very nice course! Even after two days of rain (about 3+ inches) the course was playable...wet (cart paths only). Played in 3:15. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Would gladly play it over and over again!!
Needs a Little Attention
Let me say first that I really like this course--I like the layout, the views of the mountains, and the variety of holes (and shots). But, I was surprised that Black Rock was not in its usually pristine shape! The tee boxes were chewed up with long grass, the fairways had burned up places throughout the course and long stems of weeds, and the bunkers were lacking sand. Additionally, the pace of play was awful...it states on the scorecard "playing time for 18-hole round should be FOUR HOURS or less" (capitals on the scorecard). However, our round was 4 hours 35 mins. We waited on every hole, every shot, and I never saw a marshal. They either overbook the course or are not monitoring play to keep the pace to their stated time. I was not happy, and basically lost focus (and desire to play) on the back. It was 94 degrees and slow, slow, slow. It will be a little while before I drive the 1+ hour to get there.
Just Average
After reading all the good reviews I thought I would give this place a try. In my opinion just a very average course. The layout of some holes is quite strange. Pace of play was great on the front 9 but by the time I reached the back there was a 3 some playing at a very slow pace with no one in front of them and would not let anyone play through, the ranger did nothing to speed them up he was just under a tree watching 3 groups pile up behind them. Greens and fairways were in good shape but the bunkers are all in need of some work and were basically just mud. For $40 there is some better options in the area in my opinion.
Good value
This was a good value. The course needed to have it's grass cut, but with rain they have been behind in that area. The course was challenging, but fun to play. The staff was friendly. My playing friends said they had a good time. They enjoyed the course as well. If you are looking for a great value and course, play Black Rock.
Solid
Nice course, difficult from the blues. Rough not always great, sand not always in great condition. Beautiful views. Recommend.
Great Layout - Needs Manicured
The tee boxes are in horrible shape - I am hoping that they will improve during the year. Brought memories of why I joined Chambersburg Country Club the last 3 years. Some of the traps were unplayable (some without sand!). Greens and fairways were decent for the time of year.
Two Club Wind
Greens were slow , bot fair once you got the speed down.
Beautiful Course
A great course in the countryside. Scenic holes with beautiful ponds providing challenges off the tee. Love the elevation changes. One of my top two courses to play.
Great course!
We played shortly after aeration, but still was in great shape. The layout is challenging and the scenery was beautiful. An item they really need to work on is the cleanliness of the bathrooms. Kind of odd that such a nice facility has neglected to clean the bathrooms for what appears to be months, both on-course and clubhouse.
Great staff, ok course
The course was being aerated during my play. The greens are small, the edges of the greens need work. The bunkers were in very poor shape from recent rains. Wait till next year.
Nice course and friendly staff
Sand traps desperately need sand! I know it is extremely expensive to refill sand traps but you have to do at least a few at a time. Other than that we had a great day and enjoyed our selves. Course was in great shape considering all the rain we've had.
Great course
Drove over an hour to play there and will do it again! Beautiful layout with challenging holes. Despite all the rain this year course was in good shape.
Not great
Tee boxes- horrible unless you’re into crab grass
Fairways- horrible more crabgrass
Greens- very nice shape, on the slow side but it is a muni.
A great layout, so great a some point I overlooked the poor conditions. Also I am going to put some blame on this summers conditions. Everything shaggy I will place blame on the weather but the crab grass everywhere but the greens including bunkers is shameful! To be ranked as Marylands top muni is baffling!
Quick 9
Snuck in 9holes in an hour and 15 mins on a Sunday morning. Great pace and considerate groups ahead allowing me to play through. Course was in great shape considering the amount of rain the previous few days.
