Black Rock Golf Course
About
Black Rock Golf Course may be one of western Maryland's newest courses but it's located near some of the country's most historic sites. Antietam Battlefield and Harper's Ferry are just a few minutes away from this scenic course. The opening holes of the layout are tucked into the Shenandoah Valley while the back nine climbs uphill, offering views that stretch across the Appalachian Mountains. The golf course has plenty of holes that will please long hitters, but mature trees and thick rough frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy. Traps protect the front of most of the greens and you'll come across dramatic undulations on some. The par-4 13th is arguably Black Rock's toughest hole. This sharp dogleg right has a massive tree to the right as well as a pond right in front of the green.

AWESOME COARSE
From Virginia Beach, the grass at this course alone puts ours to shame. Super friendly at the club house. Will play again ext time I'm in the area.
Great day
Course was well groomed, greens were a nice pace and true, staff and food were as wonderful as ever!
Recommend
Great combination of left and right dog-legs Greens in great condition I would recommend this course to anyone that loves a challenge
Course in good shape even after 6" snow fall 4 days earlier, cart path only, very wet but no issues. Pace of play was great even tho there were many golfers on course. Staff is great to work with. get you in and out quickly. Play here a lot, great course.
Good layout
Enjoyed the round. Even though they are working the grounds, it's in good shape. Thank you.
Best Municipal Course I've Played
Title says it all, really. It's not exactly inspired golf course design, but it's a fun course that is beginner-friendly while still holding some interest to the better, more serious golfer. It's not a hard course, but that's fine. Golf can be easy as long as it's still interesting. As for conditions, considering it was the middle of February, the course was in good shape. I've played the course during the summer, and conditions are excellent then as well. And it's decent value as well. I wouldn't travel much more than half an hour to play here, but if you live in the area, and you haven't played here, I would recommend it.
Feb 8th, Course in Decent Shape WOW!
How lucky to be playing a round in Early February, fairways and greens are FIRM (not mushy) . Course is doing some work on the OLDER trees on the course, this should make play in 2017 a little different (perhaps easier).
Couldn't ask for more
The course is a great layout and for being this time of year was in excellent condition. I've never met a friendlier staff anywhere. Can't wait for another nice day to make the two hour trip again!
Local Favorite
I play here a couple of times a month. The course is very well maintained. It is my favorite Washington County course. I was very impressed with the course conditions this late in the year. It looks like spring at Black Rock.
Great value!
First time playing Black Rock in several years I found it well maintained even for the long dry summer. Our foursome had a great time on a beautiful day on a fun track. This course is well worth your time especially as a Hot Deal. Enjoy!
OK
First, the greens and fairways weren't bad, though the fairways were a little long. The greens were pretty fast considering the undulation and they were in above average shape. When the greens are good, I can deal with slow play and burned out areas on the periphery of the course a little better than if the putting surface was poor.
best 18 hole value in the Hagerstown area
There are other courses in the area I like more (eg Maryland National) but this is the best value in the area. Senior rates for 18 and a cart are $30, and golfnow has deals less than that. Other courses I like in the area are over $50. The course is fun and fair (eg no ridiculous greens like PBDye), a little long for someone like me that doesn't hit it very far. It was in good shape considering how little rain we've had in the past month.
Nice Track
Had a nice time driving up to Hagerstown to play a course I had not played before. Black Rock was a fun course to play. Arriving very early the pro asked if I wanted to join a twosome one the first tee. He read my mind! Three of us played in less than four hours, had a nice round, and a lot of fun.
Course superintendent was directing reworking of several bunkers, and said we'd like better soon. We responded we would like to be good enough not to be in them.
The course has many challenges, some trees, lakes, ponds, hills. Course easily weaves through all making it a fine challenge. There were a couple holes where an off line tee shot puts one in "jail" but luckily my playing partners had played there before and kept me away from those problems.
It was a fun day of golf and I'd surely retuirn!
Golf @ Black Rock in Hagerstown, MD
Overall the course was in great conditions, The greens however were recently aerated so in a few days/week the greens should be fine.
Fairways were in great shape, grass was green considering it was the middle of summer season, The staff were all helpful and friendly.
I would definitely play this course again .
Must play course in Hagerstown area!
Black Rock Golf Course is a must play course in the Hagerstown area. The course is well maintained and with it's dog legs, elevation changes, angles and generous size greens the course is a delight to play as well as a challenge for all levels of players .
a Jekyll/Hyde course
Almost two different courses, really.
The front side is wooded and fairly tight with abundant waste in play, very challenging tee-shots and approaches on most of the holes...the back is much more wide open with a lot less waste and much easier approaches, though overall a little longer than the front. Both are good sides with good elevation and challenging shots but the front is both harder and suffers from the road-noise and cars driving by the course on the road that leads to the course. The back is really nice and quiet, picturesque, somewhat laid-back, a nice course in and of itself. I would guess that many people come here and just play the back 9 twice. If I had to pick 9 holes to play in the DC area, the back 9 here would be at or near the top of my list. The front I would take friends with let's say "an overinflated view of their golf skills". It's definitely humbling.
No sand, only dirt in the bunkers, and not much in the way of housing on the course.
Decent clubhouse with a good deck for watching play from the shade, definitely a nice place for a round of golf.
Update: played the course several times since my initial trip from the "mountains" of PA. Love the course and will make a habit of playing here.
