Maplegate Country Club
About
Maplegate Country Club sprawls across 150 acres of gently rolling hills that are blanketed with forests of stately maple, oak, beech, and white pine trees. The golf course is situated just off of I-495 along the border between Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Although the location is seemingly isolated, it’s conveniently only 45 minutes from Boston. The course plays harder than it looks with a diverse layout that will test you with a variety of different shots. Maplegate Country Club's front nine features more target-style golf but you'll get to pull out your driver on the back nine. There are some tough holes, but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper. The variety that the golf course offers made it the natural choice to host U.S. Open Qualifiers in both in 1998 and 2001.

Never play again
Slow hard greens, chopped up fairways, beat up tee boxes,,very very slow pace of play. Left after 9 holes 3 groups waiting on 10th hole.
Overpriced and poor conditions
Course tee boxes, fairways, and some greens were in terrible shape. Many holes were designed to impact high handicap short drive players ( hazards were 180- 230 away on multiple holes).
Slooow greens
Course was in decent shape but the greens were very slow. I think 3 of 18 were rolled so it was tough to get a consistant feel.
Narrow course in very fair condition
The course provided great value for the money we paid on GolfNow.com but even some of the tee boxes weren't mowed. A lot of repair work underway. A lot of hazards forcing you to lay up short or take a major risk to clear on par 4 and 5 holes.
much better than I expected given some of the recent reviews
greens were much better than many I have played on this year. It was evident that some of the fairways had been impacted by the severe winter weather but not to the extent that it had a negative impact on my game. Overall , Maplegate remains one of the better courses in the area. Will play it again shortly !
Really bad
I have played this course in the past, and it has a great layout. Unfortunately, the conditions were horrible, rough was merely clumps of grass, and greens were extremely slow and awful. Tee boxes were not mowed. It's such a shame because this course used to be well kept, and is a great layout.
Horrible
Horribly overpriced like any course in Massachusetts. Fairways not kept up and greens horrible. Ariated everytime I have ever played there. Need to start taking better care of the course if they wanna charge that much to play. Will not be playing there in the near future.
Waste of what cold be a good course!
I booked a tee time through golf now for yesterday (6/1/14) and was exited to get to play this course which is normally over $50 for only $35.00 with a cart.
I arrived at the course roughly an hour before my tee time to hit the range and putting green. I went into the clubhouse to pay and get my range balls and there was no one there except a young girl working the concessions. She was polite but did not know how to operated the computer / register and told my friend and I that we had to wait for her brother to come back. We waited roughly 15 minutes. I paid for my green fees and my range balls, which were pretty beat up, and waited for my friend to complete his identical transaction in which they ran out of range balls and handed him a half full bucket and said, "have fun.". They charge $7 dollars for range balls.
Finally out of the clubhouse with our range balls, we make our way to the carts where apparently 15 carts had dead batteries and we were told they had no carts at the time and when one became available they would bring it to us on the range. We walked over to the range which is slightly elevated and I got a little excited seeing that people were hitting off the grass and not the mats. The excitement quickly left when I saw that there was barely any grass and the ground was uneven with small chunks of crabgrass dirt patches and rocks. I was forced to tee the ball up for every shot for fear of hitting a rock and also that it would be almost impossible to get good contact even if i was to try to hit off the uneven, bumpy, hard packed dirt and rock. One of the young employees brought us our cart just as we were finishing up. The cart still had trash in it, the plastic canopy on the back was cracked and broken and interfered with my driver and woods when trying to either take them out or put them back into my bag.
Already disgusted, we made our way from the range to the putting green. The putting green was very small and shaped oddly and was pretty busy. Two to three people were forced to practice with just one hole from about a max of 10 feet due to how crowded it was. While on the practice green, there seemed to be some confusion with who was supposed to be teeing off and when and we were repeatedly asked by one of the staff when our tee time was and how many people we had (at least 4 times in a 20 minute span).
Finally standing on the first tee, par 5 and slight dogleg left, we had to wait a good 15 minutes for the group of 4 to finally hack their way from the tee box to out of range of our drivers. The pace picked up slightly and was not to bad for the front 9.
Note: score card says that you can hit driver on every par 4 and 5 on the course. This is untrue. for the first 10 holes, you can only use your driver on 2 holes, the first and i believe the 6th. On every other hole, unless you bomb your driver with 270 carry or only hit it 200 or less, your laying up off the tee.
Greens were in less than decent shape, they missed patches with the mower on some greens, other greens were not mowed at all and looked to be at least a week before their last trim. The greens were recently aerated which caused for a bumpy roll and almost every green was littered with unpaired ball marks.
After the front 9, we pulled into the club house to grab a quick beer and hotdog. They had a poor selection of beverages, alcoholic or not, and were out of many things. The hotdogs were still cold in the middles and their relish and chopped onions had been sitting out all day and were warm and gross looking.
Back at the 10th, the course continued with much of the same as the front condition wise. At the 12th, the group of 4 in front of us either left, or played through, and we were now stuck behind a group of 5, yes 5! It took a little more than 3 hours to play the rest of the back, continuously having to wait large amounts of time before every one of our shots with the longest about 10-12 minutes waiting for our approach on 18. At no point in my golfing career so far had I wanted to just hurry up and finish until now.
The layout of the course has potential but the condition of the tee boxes, greens, rough, sand traps, and even fairways was poor to say the least. For the money this course normally charges (and even the discounted rate I had through golf now), I would recommend going down the street to Bungay Brook or even New England Country Club for a more enjoyable experience.
I will not personally play Maplegate again unless I hear there is either new management or at the very least a new greens keeper.
this is a very nice course, tree lined fairways.
course was in good shape. greens were slow due to rainy day. people at course very very nice.
Pleasant Surprise
I went to this course on a whim. I am new to the area and wanted to try the Golf Now app. This course was fun to play. It had a few unseen obstacles that were surprising for a first time player. The course is open enough to play from balls of the fairway, unlike the thick course of Plymouth and Upper Cape courses I usually play with friends. I really enjoyed the course and look forward to playing it again.
Quaint and Quiet
Average QUALITY course but each hole has character and requires some strategy. Not in bad shape, but grass is "iffy" (even when you DO hit the fairway)
Maplegate
Great course outlay. Some skinny fairways and a lot of trees but reasonable distance in reference to the difficulty of hitting the fairways. Good amount of lay-up holes.
Great course
Great course. Has some low areas so with the rain it was cart path only. Other than that it's a great place to play.
Disappointing
I love the layout of the course, but the green were horrendous.
I know it is early and it was wet, but most of the greens had 2" wide ribs all the way across with some bald spots to boot which made putting a bumpy mess.
Some tees were temporary which I can live with this early, but the greens were a left over from a bad punching or something last fall.
Hopefully they will grow out and be rolled out smooth but I would hesitate to spend the weekend rate to play again.
quiet setting that has a good lay out
friendly staff. The course is coming back nicely. we played a steady round and the foursome will come back to play again. The fees were very reasonable.

Nice round for the money .. Friendly staff and course is a nice layout .. Not too hard not too easy
Early season conditions
So so at best. Hot dogs only. No cigars. Conditions were rough. Greens slow. Uncut. Fairways had many bare spots.
Nice course...can't wait to play it with good weather!
Nice course and surprisingly empty on a Sat AM!
Great staff, awesome layout, and pretty challenging. Greens are a little bumpy but I attribute that to it being week 2....
Definitely bring your smart golf hat! You will pay for shots hit into bad places.
