Maplegate Country Club
About
Maplegate Country Club sprawls across 150 acres of gently rolling hills that are blanketed with forests of stately maple, oak, beech, and white pine trees. The golf course is situated just off of I-495 along the border between Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Although the location is seemingly isolated, it’s conveniently only 45 minutes from Boston. The course plays harder than it looks with a diverse layout that will test you with a variety of different shots. Maplegate Country Club's front nine features more target-style golf but you'll get to pull out your driver on the back nine. There are some tough holes, but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper. The variety that the golf course offers made it the natural choice to host U.S. Open Qualifiers in both in 1998 and 2001.

Course was a little rough
While the pace of play was fairly good and the course is an overall delight, it was definitely in some rough shape, greens and fairways alike. If they were to just put a little more into maintenance, I think this could be very fun and a good course for the money... As it stands, I am glad I got it on Golfnow for $29 w/ cart. That's pretty much all I'd be willing to spend here for 18.
Challenging layout that needs some maintenance attention.
Played here with a buddy of mine today after making a hot deal purchase . Had it not been for the fact that I paid half price, I would have been disappointed. As stated by another reviewer there were several holes with blind shots and not knowing exactly where to hit the ball we guessed wrong a couple of times. A few of the tee boxes seemed pushed up a bit leaving us to hit off of crabgrass and dirt tee boxes. It appeared that they had aerated a few tee boxes and they were aerating the 18th fairway while we were there. Some of the greens were in good shape, but there were others that had been lost. I spent a good amount of the day in the bunkers scattered around the course, and can say that they were nicely maintained. For full price I would go elsewhere, but at half price it was acceptable.
A Nice Course
So I golfed this after booking a red hot deal and for the price it was great. However, a few critiques I should make. First was that when I arrived at the pro shop (if you can call it that, more of a check in counter) I realized I had forgotten a glove and asked to buy one. They didn't have any in the store, no balls either. In fact the only things I could see to buy were hats, food, and drinks. Once on the course, it was a nice place. However the tee boxes were not well maintained and I often found myself searching for a spot that was more than just dirt or crab grass. Also, there are a lot of blind shots, which was great, however there were no bells or anything to alert the next golfer that you had passed the danger zone. Having said all that, the course itself was challenging enough, the traps were well maintained, the staff was really friendly and apologetic for their lack of golf merchandise, and my girlfriend and I had a good time. This is one of those courses that if someone wanted to go I wouldn't change their mind. I'm glad I went here but I probably will not be returning.
Soooo not worth it
Played the course on 8/18 with a friend who had never played there before. I last played there about 3 years ago and had decent memories of a fun track. Over the course of 4 hours, I saw other players driving on tee boxes and greens with no ranger in site. Almost every tee box was impossible to put the tee in the ground and grass hadn't been but in a week. The greens were concrete and at least 20% of each "green" was just dirt. Overall just a completely unenjoyable rounds from start to finish...oh and they get you for $69 bucks which is at minimum $20 bucks to much.
Great layout but course in ragged condition
The course layout is a great with a number of challenging holes and interesting features. However, the tee boxes are uneven and almost all dirt and all the greens had bare patches with some almost half the green. My buddy had one long putt that was 40 feet all in the dirt to get to the grass part of the green. Fix these things and the course would be a great place to play.
nice course...greens in rough shape
Beautiful course in a quiet setting. Very friendly staff. Went and played on a saturday and the course was dead, noone playing which i found odd. Until i got to the first green and realized why the course is so dead, the greens were all covered in burn spots. Tee boxes were a little rough as well. Got a deal online to play cheaper than the daily rate, but the price is a little steep at $69.
Embarrassing
What a joke..$50 to play this crummy course. By far the worst course Ive played in a long time. Another golfer was with his son speaking with the marshall in the parking lot and I heard the word "embarrassing" about 10 times in a minute. I think he didnt want to use more profound abusive words in front of his teenage son. Greens burnt, fairways burnt, tee boxes.burnt/dirt mounds..the absolute worst course..Id be just as upset if I spent $30 dollars there. Golfnow, why is the worst level of condition only "requires attention"? You need something a lot more specific and harsh to describe this course.
long course, holes look similar.
some tee boxes were all dirt, some greens were in rough shape.
course is in horrible shape!
the staff were very friendly upon arriving. But the course was just in horrible shape, greens were aweful, fairways were decent on some holes, and the T-boxes were very bad. Very overpriced not worth the money at all..
Course was in very poor condition. On most greens we were putting through hardpan. Very narrow off the tee and extremely small greens that inconsiste

The weather has been rough on this course
I've played here many times before and have always liked this course. It is challenging enough and picturesque, but this year the weather has taken it's toll on the course. The day I played, many of the tee boxes were being aerated and the greens had a lot of dry, dead spots. I hope they can bring this course back to it's previously good condition because I usually like this course a lot. I will say, however, that the pace of play was very good.
Course repairs and Maintenance Needed Now
Course in very poor condition throughout. Many greens, tee boxes and fairways have brown areas requiring massive repairs. If I paid full price for my round, I would have asked for refund. Maintenance staff is on the course now doing work but its probably too late for this season. Big disappointment from what Maplegate used to be as course. In the past, the management used to be bad to the golfers, now the course condition is not up to par.
Poorly maintained course, no consistency to pace of play, hard as a rock fairways and greens
Terrible conditions, looked like the greens keeper had something against the course, greens burnt out to unplayable, fairways hard as a rock with terrible lies in the middle of the fairway, best conditions were in the rough, can you imagine you were actually trying to hit it in the rough. My playing partner summed it up perfectly, they should have payed us to play.
Don't schedule a tee time any later than 2:30
The day was great, the staff are very friendly. the course looked like it was intentionally burned in some areas. My biggest complaint would be, the sprinklers. They came on as i was making my apporach to the green on the 18th hole. It was about 6pm and made it almost impossible to make my last approach shot. if you play Maplegate and you are approaching the 18th around 6 pm do not hit the ball in the fairway because you will have to deal with the sprinklers, or wear a bathing suit.
nice course, very poor condition
i was lucky enough to find a great rate of $20 on GOLF NOW.COM.. if i paid the full price i would have been very upset.. the tee boxes were patchy at best and some were even bare of grass.. the greens were also patchy w large dirt areas w no grass at all. there was some airation on the tee boxes and some wierd diagonal slicing on the greens w no previous warning prior to booking the tee time or even at the clubhouse when checking in.. the course has NO plaque w the lay outs at each hole! virtually no yardage or distance markers in the faiways ( a few holes had white and blue markers in trees but nothing that could be paced off.) i havent played this course in several years. it was at one point known as a nice track. all i can say is im very glad i paid $20.. and i would play it again for $20.. i will thank Golf Now for the discount & i will leave it at that..
Beat by the heat
I've always liked the layout at Maplegate, which is a decent challenge from the blues. I've had past issues with their very shaggy greens for what I consider a premium greens fee. Conditions this time were borderline awful. Several greens were completely baked with large dead spots. Lots of large hardpan/dead spots on aprons and fairways too. Greens were actually being verticut to break up hardpan crust. Many tees were more crabgrass than grass. Many sand traps with multiple large washout areas on the high ends. Not worth $59 on a weekday.
tee areas being airated, greens in terrible shape
would not play it again until it is improved. it appears as if they are not spending the money to keep the course up. When it first opened it was in pristine shape.
Greens were rock hard and sandy, fairways were burnt, tee boxes were dirt and crab grass. Nice course, but maintanence is non existent.

So much potential - such terrible upkeep.
I feel bad about spending my money here when they clearly are putting very little of theirs back into it. Bad greens, next to no distance markers, and brown patches galore. For the price, I was expecting much better.
That being said - it's a sprawling course though a beautiful area. If they could keep their grounds in adequate shape, they would be getting a far better review.
