Maplegate Country Club sprawls across 150 acres of gently rolling hills that are blanketed with forests of stately maple, oak, beech, and white pine trees. The golf course is situated just off of I-495 along the border between Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Although the location is seemingly isolated, it’s conveniently only 45 minutes from Boston. The course plays harder than it looks with a diverse layout that will test you with a variety of different shots. Maplegate Country Club's front nine features more target-style golf but you'll get to pull out your driver on the back nine. There are some tough holes, but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper. The variety that the golf course offers made it the natural choice to host U.S. Open Qualifiers in both in 1998 and 2001.

Great layout, not great conditions.

If you like a challenge then shooting from the blue or black tees is for you. However, when you get to the greens be ready for the browns. Most of the greens had 40 percent dirt and had just been aerated. Also, the grounds crew was working on the course while we were out there and literally revving their engines next to the greens while we were putting. Granted we were playing on a Monday. Otherwise the course was challenging with enough hazards to keep all golfers on their toes.

Many of the fairways, all of the greens and aprons need major attention.

Many of the fairways, all of the greens and aprons need major attention. I would not recommend this course to anyone.
I have played this course many times over the years. It use to be top ranked. It has now hit the bottom of the list. I will not play again until I hear they have fixed. I will also recommend to my friends not to waste their money...

A great course gone bad

I played this course for the first time in several years. It used to be one of the better courses in New England. How times change. The course was in really bad shape. Tee boxes were mostly crabgrass and weeds. Fairways and greens had extensive brown/bald spots. Such a shame. Even at a reduced rate through GolfNow, this course is not worth it. Some serious investment needs to be put into this course.

Greens are a MESS

The greens on this course were an absolute mess. According to a marshall on one of the holes on the back nine, they mistakenly applied some chemicals during the hot stretch a few weeks ago and it burned the grass up. There was literally NO grass on huge parts of several greens. A lot of the tees were pretty gnarly too.

That being said, I actually putted pretty well on these greens. They were extremely fast (at least where they were burned out), and rolled fairly straight...

It was certainly not worth the $50 in this condition.

Avoid at all costs!!!!

Apparently they sprayed the wrong chemicals on the greens and instead of closing the place down to repair the greens they are trying to squeeze more money out of it at our expense. The greens are mostly just dirt with small patches of grass here and there. The staff even admitted that the rates should be half what they are charging. Avoid, avoid avoid.

Potential to be one of the best in area, unfortunately the course was in horrible shape.

I loved the layout of the course. Challenging holes, great mix in elevations.
It was so disappointing to drive over an hour and play on horrible conditions. The greens were diseased or brown and even under repair, The fairways were not much better, and the tee boxes were chewed up. I would like to try again, if I hear that the course has been restored, otherwise not worth the trip.

Brown.

Maplegate is convenient (just off Rt 495) and not a bad layout. Unfortunately the conditions are at best just ok and at worst, aweful. It was all dried out and large areas of the fairways and greens were basically dirt. It has been hot and dry around here lately but I have played other coarses (Whitinsville) and they are looking great so it is lack of investment in the coarse that is the issue with Maplegate.

conditions deplorable

Every green is burned out. Most have dirt patches or large sections of dead grass. I have played here off and on over the years and it was always in terrific condition. I was stunned at the current conditions. I am not exaggerating at all. It was unbelievably bad .

Very poor conditions, specifically on the greens. The layout it good, but clearly no investments have been made in keeping it in good condition.

Maplegate has declined dramatically

Course was in terrible shape. At least half of the greens were burned out (brown) on over one-third of their surface area. Grass on greens was cut way too short. No evidence of watering on greens. Fairways and tee boxes seem not have been watered as well.

Maplegate used to be in wonderful shape all season long. Not this year.

I have taken Maplegate off my list. Not worth it even at reduced rates. Very few golfers were on the course, even on a Sunday morning.

This course is not worth $69 with cart...

The price we paid thru golf now was a great deal however we would never pay full price and most likely would never go back. The greens if you can call them that we're in terrible condition. It was like putting on dirt since there was bearly any grass on most of them. It was the same situation on the tee boxes. The yardage markers are nailed onto trees far in the woods you can barely spot them. This course could be a beautiful place to play if some money was put into it and for the price they charge it sb a pristine course.

Nice layout, poor condition and slow pace of play

Played the course for the first time and I was very disappointed. I enjoyed the layout of the course except for the fact that too many holes are the same length but the condition were the worst I've played on this summer. They force you to use a cart and enforce cart path only for no reason that I could see. They do not allow coolers but there is no cart girl going around. We also had a 20 minutes at the turn. The one positive is that the staff were very friendly. I won't be going back.

Greens in need of water and attention

Course was in rough shape. Pace of play was terrible, waiting on every shot. Not sure what, if any of a irrigation system they may have but it didn't appear to be used frequently. the greens were in terrible condition, and the fairways were not that great either. putting green was slow and not even close to the same speed as any other green.

the way the course is right now I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Even the signature waterfall was not working.

if it wasn't for the deal that I got through Golf now I would have been extremely upset playing that golf course.
at least a half-dozen tea boxes had nothing but crabgrass and sand. fairways and greens with bare spots and chunks missing out of them. There were several greens and fairways that were actually crunchy from being dried out.
for a course with blind spots and many large hazards it is the most POORLY marked golf course in the area.

Coursr requires you pay attention

In liked the course accept for there are two many areas roped off,and that creates problems for me because I have trouble with a lot of walking. The fairways and greens are in pretty good shape.

Nice looking at a distance, but greens are too slow

I like this course and the deals are great. I would be willing to pay a couple of dollars more even, if that meant they could afford to mow the greens and the fringe. The putts were just too slow and the fringe looked like the first cut of rough. I don't understand why this should be the case.

Otherwise this course is lots of fun for the money. There are areas of swampy reeds to be carried on some holes, but these areas are not located in very frustrating places, so they seem fair to me. It has some nice challenges and some easier holes for my game, something just better than or a bit worse than bogey golf, depending on the day.

much better than previous experience

hadn't gone here for years due to rangers/staff pushing players along when it was unwarranted, no one in front or behind you but still making you feel uncomfortable. This time was great, played quick, staff friendly, and the conditions very good. Will play here more often after this round.

Good Course for Mid to Low Handicap Golfers

This course is a nice find. Didn't know it existed until golf now recommended it.

It's not a good place to bring hackers.

The greens were wet when we played, so they were a bit slow. However, they ran evenly and they were consistent. The fact that it was a bit wet and rain was foretasted may have made the pace of play faster than usual.

There is a grass driving range, the range grass could be better, but at least it's grass. They have mats too, for those who want them.

Fairways are in good shape, but the tee boxes could be better maintained.

This is not a driver course unless you play from the Gold (far back) tees. There is water and hazards are in play on ~10 of the par 4+ holes, pretty much forcing a layup for anyone that can't consistently rip a 260+ yard carry. This makes the course great for those who know how to think their way around a course. It would be a nightmare for the guys who rip out drivers on every par 4/5. I teed off with a 6 iron or less on ~15 holes.

Other thoughts:
> There are quite a few downhill approaches, and no uphill approaches that I remember.
> It's cart only, but it's a very walkable course. I think if you asked nicely, they'd let you walk.
> The par 3's are very pretty and well designed.
> They do have food, but not much of an offering. The "Clubhouse" is tiny. I'm not sure if they sell beer there or not.
