Maplegate Country Club
About
Maplegate Country Club sprawls across 150 acres of gently rolling hills that are blanketed with forests of stately maple, oak, beech, and white pine trees. The golf course is situated just off of I-495 along the border between Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Although the location is seemingly isolated, it’s conveniently only 45 minutes from Boston. The course plays harder than it looks with a diverse layout that will test you with a variety of different shots. Maplegate Country Club's front nine features more target-style golf but you'll get to pull out your driver on the back nine. There are some tough holes, but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper. The variety that the golf course offers made it the natural choice to host U.S. Open Qualifiers in both in 1998 and 2001.

Too Much to Pay for Lousy Greens
Played on 5/5/13. Greens were in bad shape possibly from late aeration. Hard as rock and slow and bumpy is not worth the full in-season rate. I felt overcharged even at the discount rate. Fairways are in decent but not great shape. I won't be going back for a while.
More expected for the money
I went to Maplegate for the first time last week and was disappointed. While the staff is friendly and polite the course was not in great shape. The tee boxes were fair to poor condition and the greens were very bumpy. The fairways and rough were in excellent shape but playing as one and having never been to this trak I found myself confused on where the next hole was located because of poor signage. As far as the course layout if you are a first timer you had better have a good GPS because many of the holes are blind and it is not readily apparent where you want to be. Unless you are a huge hitter you can leave your driver in the bag for most holes. If you enjoy target golf this is the course for you. I imagine playing the course on a regular basis would develop a better local knowledge, but at $59.00 and no pull carts before noon I would much rather play courses like Highfields, Blackstone Nat. or Kettlebrook for the same money and lots more amenities.
Great Layout - poorly maintained
This course used to be one of the best around but its high price kept me from playing it often. Played it April 16th which is still early in the season so I wasn't expecting great conditions but what I found was discouraging. The greens had thin spots (not snow mold) with little grass in spots. The fairways were in rough shape with lots of divots and thin spots and the edges aka rough had alot of bare areas. Looks like damage or wear you'd see on an old overgrown course where tto many trees do not allow grass to grow. The $35 Golfnow price was ok but the normal $69 to play this place will leave you disappointed and not ever wanting to return.
pretty nice for early in the year
empty course, nice for early in the year, but definitely will get better as the grass gets greener and the trees grow their leaves
Needs a little TLC
Overall, this is a good experience. The special they posted on GolfNow was a terrific value for me, and a great way for them to fill an open spot or too. The regulars are outstanding playing partners.
The course is not in ideal condition, but it is not awful, especially given the time of year which I played. Fairways are decent, but the first cut and the greens need some TLC this spring.
nice mix of holes, premium on driving
early in the season so there were some areas that need so attention. the price was right though 27 bucks 18 with a cart through hot deals.
Fairway/Bunker/Tee Box conditions great, greens need a lot of work
The layout is difficult, need to move the ball both ways of the tee to shoot well, lots of tee shots less than driver. The greens porbably won;t be ready for at least a month to start rolling true, only complaint is the greens. Price and layout is fantastic.
Could use a little TLC...
...and this could be a great course. Challenging layout and great location.
First round of the season
We played Maplegate the day after it opened for the season so it is difficult to make an accurate assessment of the course. Considering it was still March, the conditions were not that bad. Certainly some sunshine will help things, but it also would have been nice to have rakes near the bunkers and properly color-coded flags in the pins (most seemed to be red regardless of where they were actually placed on the green).
The pace of play was slow due to the high number of people on the course that day (it was the first warm Saturday of spring), but the course seems to be pretty aggressive about how many players they send out (the starting tee times are only about 8 minutes apart), which I'm sure is a contributing factor to the slowness.
The course itself is challenging, with interesting features and long, rolling fairways. With some maintenance this could be a really beautiful course.
great layout poor condition.
course has great ppotential however condition of fairways and greens left with graeat need of attention poorly taken care of greens need a lot of work fairways in need of much attention.
Great layout needs to recover from a long winter
We had a great day at Maplegate, albeit cold and breezy. This was our first time at Maplegate and we found it to be a very enjoyable track. Course condition was mixed. Greens were better than expected after a rough winter, rolling true on some, but with bumps on others. Tee to green there is quite a bit of turf repair to be done -- seemed like a fair amount of it likely originated last summer/fall, so makes me question how well conditions will bounce back this summer. Still quite a bit of storm debris in places, but there were clear signs the Maplegate staff is working on this, so will get better in coming weeks.
All in all, we had a great early spring round of golf. Because we liked the track as much as we did, we will definitely be back to play again when the conditions should be better.
A sea of leaves.
The course was not ready for customers after hurricane Sandy. The staff member offered a few balls prior to playing, but we lost balls on the fairway. Leaves were in piles in fairways and were not bagged. These were the good holes. Job security I guess. From the t-box on 10 it looked like a sea of leaves. The entire left side was covered. Only a small landing area on the right and that had the fairway bunker. Very disappointing for the price. I played another day this summer and the course was better, so this is accurate for the day, but not in general. I think the green fees are high for the course.
Course could be great
Needs more attention to fairways - most greens are nice. Had too much debris on the fairways (pinecones and leaves and braches) you might expect off the fairway. Needs a clubhouse.
great value needs a bit of attention rough was rough
ok great value better than average needs some work around the edges but overall good a hard course especially from the tips
Worst conditions I've ever seen,
The course had the worst conditions I had ever seen here. Staff seemed to pack in the foursomes so that pace of play was brutal, over 5 hours and waiting on every shot. Not sure what happened at this course but it needs some huge TLC.
needs work
The tee boxes are in very rough shape. Many of the forward tee boxes did not have any grass on them at all.
Nice people, but the course needs lots of work. Not worth the money, even with golf now discount.
poor
front 9 in horrible shape, 1 green is 50 % dirt.
back 9 is above average
poor condition
This course may have been in the worst condition of any course I have ever played. There was no fairway (all burned out) and the majority of the greens surfaces were mud. Luckily we paid 39$ on golfnow otherwise they are charging an absolutely horrendous price of 69$ on the weekend! To be honest, if I paid the 69$ I would have walked off after the 4th hole and asked for a refund. It's a pretty setting but that's about all it has....
