Great value
Nice layout. Well maintained. Great value at Golf Now prices.
Well worth the ride!
The course was in great shape, the staff very friendly, and what can I say about the GolfNow rate other than awesome! Seriosly, even without the great rate, it's worth the daily greens fee. Although it's out of my way, I'll play there again this summer.
this course is in bad shape
this course is in bad shape for this time of year, patchy fairways unkeep bunkers. the only time you can get an even lie is on the tee box.
A good layout
NECC is a good layout that I had not played for awhile. But it is ruff around the edges. While they have kept the good layout, some attention to the turf conditions is in order. I recommend playing only when you can get a Golfnow bargain.
Great course
Only paid $25 and for mid May the course was in great shape. Challenging course, definitely need the GPS provided as there are quite a few shots with no view of the pin. Loved the layout!
Couldn't agree more ... terrific layout ... even better value!!!
Course greens were recently aerated and putting was terrible.
Average course and greens were difficult to putt due to recent aeration. Tee boxes were hard packed.
You're not kidding about the hard surfaces from the teeing areas. Don't think it's isolated to the time of year you played either. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the course layout & the challenge it brings with it, but I put an extra club in my bag every time I play NECC. The extra club? A hammer!!!, ... just for teeing up the ball
This is the type of course where you will use all the clubs in your bag.
The course was in good shape - Golf Now alerted us that they had recently aerated so the greens will need a little time to be in tip top shape.
Title of review says it all. This is a "thinking man's" golf course. More so than almost all others in the area.
Good challenge
Other than the fact that the greens had just been airated, everything was very good. They've made changes to open up the course which should speed up play.
Speeding up pace of play should be THE front-and-center concern for this course. No better design in the area, though.
Nice layout but the course needs attention
This course's layout is interesting and challenging; however, it's rough around the edges. Cart paths are horrible and overall the course is a handful to maintain and it shows... no attention to detail. We were behind 4 young guys that had no clue about the etiquette of golf so we waited on every shot while they yukked it up while the ranger allowed this behavior to continue the entire round. Greens were just aerated but their condition should be expected at this time of the year... this was not an issue for us.
Don't have to tell you that "attention to detail" cost money.
Given the unfavorable location of the golf course, its difficulty/challenge, and the club's lack of ingenuity in marketing, it's not surprising that NECC comes up short in areas needing "attention."
Nonetheless, I, like you, find the course layout to be both "interesting and challenging."
Great layout and outstanding staff.
You can't beat the value we received through Golf Now, NECC is a great layout and aside from the tee boxes needing attention it's in good condition. We had a young foursome in front of us who had no concept of pace of play etiquette, which did make pace of play painful.
Challenging for all level of players
At $50 for the round with gps/cart a great value. The course is well maintained, however too many trees have been removed opening the course a little more than ideal. Greens are fast & true.
Want to test your game - play here !!!
PROS:
- I value "value," "course condition," and "course layout." NECC's value speaks for itself. Just play there once, and I then challenge you to find a greater value for golf in all of New England. IMO, there's only one golf course in MA that compares to NECC for layout & challenge - Cyprian Keyes in Bolyston, MA.
- Recent changes made to course layout (e.g. clearing of trees) should attract mid-to-high handicappers back to NECC.

CONS:
- Slow pace of play is due, in large part, to the challenge of the golf course.
- Staff's behavior wasn't noteworthy one way or the other. They were neither rude nor welcoming to any notable degree. Dismissive is pretty accurate. Quite frankly, staff behavior doesn't carry much weight with me anyway. I'd much rather they be dismissive than be a hindrance. Would it make for a more pleasant experience, overall, if the staff was more welcoming & attentive - absolutely!!! But, in the end, that's not why I play this silly game.
- If you ask me, PRISTINE conditions is asking a bit much for a public golf course. Overall, course conditions were fine. The only areas that could use some TLC are the greens and tee boxes.
- The greens lack consistency from one green to the next and some of the greens could be described as "a bit rutty." IMO, the best greens in & around the area can be found at Lakeville Country Club in Lakeville, MA.
- As for the teeing areas, I can only echo what another reviewer shared in stating how hard the teeing surfaces were. So hard on one tee box, in fact, that the 4 of us agreed (for fairness' sake) to all drive the ball off the deck, after the 1st player nearly broke his wrist trying to place a tee into the ground. I'd suggest softening up those teeing areas.

Great shape for April
Solid good course that always recovers so fast in new england. great pace of play and challenging course
Narrow fairways, smallish greens, "odd" layout on several holes, elevation changes, slow play.
All add up to a so-so weekend afternoon. Fairly unforgiving for a mid to high handicapper. If you are more skilled and enjoy blind shots, forced carries, winding fairways, then you'll enjoy the value. We came here attracted by the Irwin design. Glad we didnt pay too much.
Terrific assessment!
For all the reasons you laid out here, this golf course is NOT meant for the high-handicapper. And it will challenge the game of even the most patient mid-handicapper.
great course, 4 sets of tees, golf 4 all levels.
great course, really enjoyed the day because of that, staff very friendy and accomidating.
beautiful scenery & great layout !
through no fault of management the fairways & rough were covered with leaves. hey it is autumn in new england! this resulted in extremely slow play while searching for lost balls even in the center of the fairways. overall we enjoyed the experience and would love to play there again earlier in the golf season. thanks to golfnow.com for the great greens fees & we hope to take advantage of these deals in the future!
As you noted, golfers might want to steer clear of this course during the Fall season. Played there for years, and I don't recall ever seeing any leaf blowing system being used during that time of year. Probably cost-prohibitive to do so for the club.
Rude
Pro shop personel were rude and arrogant. This was always a favorite of ours but with the way we were treated we will be removing it from our playlist.
I understand your take on the golf staff, but do you miss playing the golf course itself?
Awesome value and great layout!
I played New England 20 or so times this summer and it has become my favorite course in the Southern MA area. The greens are always in great shape, the fairways are well groomed and the course is playable by higher handicappers from the forward tees yet a good test from the tips. The range is always in good shape with all grass tees, chipping and bunker green and additional putting green.
The layout is the real key, NECC does not have any stupid holes. Each hole requires thought off the tee and most holes require you are able to work the ball in both directions.
Each 9 is topped off with beautiful and challenging finishing holes. Nice design feature Hale Erwin!
The 9th is a downhill dogleg right that requires tee ball placement and carry. The approach is a challenging and scenic shot with huge trouble short, left and long.
I think the 18th is one of the best holes in the area. Again downhill blocked left by a massive tree and protected right by a row of trees. The two tiered green is protected by a pond short and left. Great hole and not the second shot you want to see if you're about to drop your lowest score in a while. The 18th will challenge even great players.
The par 3's appear innocuous but they are able to put pins in areas that simply aren't oneputtable from certain parts of the green. Genius design.
While the layout is filled with substance, challenge and subtle bite you in the butt characteristics, the clubhouse is a long walk to the first tee and the range, walking is not suggested. But, the carts are equipped with GPS systems and reasonably priced. They also allow carts in the fairways.
The clubhouse is small and lacks golf equipment but, who can compete with big box these days. Egan's Pub is a fun pub environment with good food and very picturesque views from the deck.
Overall, NECC is probably the best value in Southern MA - Northern RI. I would be surprised if prices didn't increase soon. Thank the good lord for Golfnow!
Took the words right out of my mouth. Design/layout is second-to-none in the area!
Not sure about the greens "always" being in great shape, though. Good, maybe, .... great, hardly ever. And, unless NECC has made SIGNIFICANT changes to its layout, I would NEVER recommend a high-handicapper test his/her game on this track - no matter how forward they play the ball.
All in all, terrific insights!!!
Short, but fun layout with well contoured/ difficult greens
Having not played New England Country Club since 2004 I was eager to return to a memorably good layout. Though still a good layout with its variety of well designed golf holes, the course conditions were at best slightly above average and the pace of play was very slow. Also, the tired conditions of the cart paths and the clubhouse, etc., show a lack of money that should be spent on a course that has carried a high reputation. It was a good day of golf (my wife had one of her best scores on the front side- including a hole out from 100yds out on the Par 4, 7th hole). I would recommend anyone with a handicap under 10 play at least back to the black (middle) tees. Our discounted Golfnow rate made our round a good value.
Appreciate your comments. Thinking about playing NECC in the near future. Did you notice any SIGNIFICANT changes to the course itself since you last played it in '04? It's been some time since I last played there as well (not quite that long, though).
Any other thoughts as to why its reputation may have "slipped" over the years?
Course was in great condition. Challenges throughout.
Played on a beautiful week day. Teed off on time, reasonable pace. Challenges throughout the course, never boring. COurse was in great shape. Great value GolfNOw - Pro shop could not believe the price, but honored it

You can find bargain rates to play NECC without using GolfNow. Played 18 holes @NECC recently for just $39. No better value in the area, if you ask me. Especially given the challenging layout & above average (NOT stellar, mind you!) course conditions.
If you just don't like the course, though, I suppose no rate will be good enough.
