The Captains Club Golf & Event Center
About
Located just 15 minutes from Flint, The Captains Club Golf & Event Center is one of the area's most popular public courses and it was even voted Grand Blanc's best golf course. Known as much for the challenging layout as it is for the affordable rates. The spacious layout offers plenty of room with wide-open fairways, none of which run parallel to one another. Dense stands of mature trees enclose most of the holes, making them feel even more peacefully secluded. Towering trees loom above the narrow fairways and they also surround the large, undulating greens. Water also has a prominent presence on the golf course. A series of waterways weave through the holes, almost completely surrounding some of the greens. The Captains Club Golf & Event Center is a course that will test your iron skills, but there aren't many opportunities for driving.

Not at all what I was expecting
Heard great things about this course but it was very disappointing. The layout was good and you can tell the course was well built, it's just not taken care of. Being a former greens keeper I would say it's a lack of resources being put into the course and a grounds crew that doesn't know what they're doing or just doesn't care. For starters the course was extremely dry, which is honestly strange considering the amount of rain we've had in the last few weeks. I would say nothing outside of the greens gets any water. The tee boxes were in horrendous condition and very few were actually level. The fairways were very dry, a lot of dead grass and disease. Same goes for the greens. Although they were mostly green, they were in pretty rough shape. They were dry to the point that we were clubbing down because it was so hard to get a ball to stop, even with a wedge. Most of the greens also had disease which appeared to be going unchecked. An example of the crew either not caring or not knowing what they're doing was the green on #6. The green is massive. Yet, the current hole location was cut within 5 feet of two recent hole locations. One them was within 2 feet of the current hole and not replaced correctly. It was bizarre. I haven't seen something that amateur hour in all the rounds of golf I've played. The course just isn't worth what they charge. $50 for a weekend morning isn't that steep but at that price you have to at least water the course and have some level of up keep. Disappointing to see a good layout and foundation go to waste.
Course is a work in progress .
Booked the 1:04 pm tee time on GolfNow. Couldn’t beat the price at $9. 00. I breezed through the first nine holes behind another single. The cart path needs repairs starting on the par 3 third hole and ending on the par 5 6th hole. The grounds crew was patching them with gravel after #8. As I said before I was rolling along with no issues until I reached the par 5 at number ten. At that point I ran into a foursome . These guys came out early for their league play to get I an early nine holes, I don’t begrudge them that but, they refused to wave me thru. They spent the next nine holes looking for their wayward balls. In the woods etc. on the greens three of them would walk off when finished while one guy practiced putts. This place needs a Ranger in the worst way. I’ve golfed here on 15 occasions this season and have yet to see a ranger. The pace of play is particularly bad on the back nine with folks from the league acting as if they own the course. Woodfield , you can do better. I like supporting local businesses , but this is ridiculous.
Slowest play ever!!
Tee time 5:45. Paid for 18, and played 9, finishing at 9:50 in dark. Beer cart girl stopping by twice thankfully. Wound up playing in a group of 10 to try to speed things up. Do not try to play this course in the evenings following leagues. The people we met up with said this is the norm. No course ranger anywhere that I saw.
Tough course
The day I played, the course was a little wet, but not terrible. The pins were in very difficult positions. Almost every one was tucked away in a corner of the green. On hole 8, which is a par 3, it was a blind tee shot, which I’ve never seen before. Overall, I enjoyed the course. If you play the blue or black tees, you must be able to move the ball left to right and right to left.
Brutal pin placement
The reviews on here are prolly from bad golfers. The cart paths are beat up drive slow or don't use them not a big deal I never had a cart path ruin my day. The tee boxes are used it's a golf course use a tee they are flat it's all that matters to me. Prolly seen the cart girls 5 or 6 times on a Monday with bad weather cudos to that. As a guy that plays 120 rounds a year the course will be getting more of my money. Only complaint is that for a course that is all about shot placement and really nice layout their was no place to hit the ball to go at pins. all very front or very back. 2 were in middle but right on huge slopes. The one par 3 you could not even see the pin from blue's that is unacceptable at 200yards plus. This course should give us a discounted round for the carnival pin placements lol. Really nice course just be fair with the pins I don't like having to hit pin point shots only to have a 3foot circle to hit my approach to have less then a 20 foot put.
2021 Captain's Club
Greens: Excellent
Tees: Choppy
Fairways: Generally excellent, but with some choppy areas
Rough: Generally good, some areas have been allowed to grow and block views toward the green making it difficult to see groups ahead and plan shots.
Cart paths: badly in need of repair - many potholes and broken areas
Bunkers: Sand is in good condition, making them very playable. Patrons tend not to rake, and saw tire tracks in one bunker.
Layout: from the White tees, excellent variety. Course requires hitting targets from the tees on many holes. May be too short for some.
Needs Lots of TLC
The captain's club is a great layout. Feels like you're playing up north. But the course is in dire need of some care. The tee boxes are atrocious. Divot marks make a difficult to get a comfortable stance. Cart paths are indicative of Michigan roads....all broken up and full of potholes. Greens roll good but are full of unprepared ball marks.
I'd recommend Sugarbush in the area rather than Captain's club.
Slowwwwww
They overbooked so there were several groups ahead & behind us.
They also squeezed two groups in front of us & the group we were waiting on at every tee box.
Great courae but with pace of play, I’m not sure I’ll be returning.
Also don’t book on Thursdays as they have leagues. Only got in 14 holes, but we’re waiting at every hole.
Not terrible, but not great
Course conditions were very dry (as has been the weather). The cart path was worse than most Michigan roads. A lot of challenging holes, but don't go in June the cottonwoods and horseflies are atrocious. Was expecting a nicer course for location and price.
Decent course, slow play
The course is fine, but this place has been plagued with slow play for 25 years. They have rangers, but no one will say anything to the slow players, so they upset everyone else on the golf course. 3 hours to play the front nine. Number 7 tee had 3 groups on it. It would also help if they would mow down some additional areas. The fact you can lose a ball on every hole makes this course terrible for beginners.
Looking pretty bad!
I was disappointed with the conditions. Needs water everywhere. Tee boxes are the worst I’ve played this year. Glad I was able to use my golf now rewards and pay less than 30. Not worth anything more
Fun to play
Price is a little steep for the condition of the course but it was fun to play. Tee boxes need some love.
A course that needs repairs.
Tee boxes in bad shape, greens need work, fairways average do have large bare spots. Cart paths will throw your back out.
Other courses in area are in better shape.
