West at Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort

About
Situated in southwest Michigan's beautiful lake region, Gull Lake View Golf Club offers five championship courses that are easily accessible from Detroit, Toledo, Chicago, Grand Rapids, and Lansing, making it a favorite for golfers from all over the Midwest and Great Lakes. It is also less than 3 hours from some parts of Canada. Gull Lake View West is the club's original course. The club is the oldest and largest in southwest Michigan and it all started with the West Course. Opened in 1963, the golf course has a traditional layout that offers a challenging but fair test. The natural terrain takes center stage on this course. The layout plays across grassy meadows, rolling hills, and valleys and there are also a few densely wooded holes. The diverse terrain calls for a variety of different shots as well as careful strategy.

Pace of play
This is a really nice course, with some really nice length par 4s that if you find the fairway, you can have a birdie chance. However, the hardest hole on the course is a long par 3 with a deep green. The back side has more uphill holes starting on 11, a rather short par 3, but don't short yourself, and a long par 4 that plays longer than scorecard uphill. The home hole also is the same as it is a long, uphill par 5. The major problem we had was on the day we played there we took a later am tee time, and there was a foursome of women who played every shot, and to be honest, they should have picked up at "double par". Please control the pace of play when it comes to this!!
Awesome!
I have to say, we were first group off that morning and what a beauty course! Nice challenging shape shot holes! The pro shop staff was the best out of the 5 courses we played this long weekend. Very friendly and really personable! Will be back next year and will stay at the villas!
Few Better...
The GLV courses are some of the best in SW Michigan-Great condition, great staff, always enjoyable-we were first out played 18 on a Saturday in about 3.5 hrs.-
Gull Lake View Perfect Once Again
My wife and I hadn't played this course in a couple of years and found it in great shape. Fairways and greens were beautiful. The course has some challenges but is not difficult to play.
The staff here was friendly and the course was full but not at all crowded.
Good course, tough for seniors
Course is in excellent shape, but it's natural properties, EG water hazards and very soft spongy fairways, plus many up hill blind shots, make it a very difficult course overall for seniors.
Wonderful Sites
Natural lay out very traditional and challenging. A must try and see for yourself. Do bring extra golf balls.
Enjoy!
Gull lake view west
Love everything about this course and the staff. Very pretty now with fall colors.
Still a Beauty!
I haven't played Gull Lake View in about 20 years. Booked a 8:51 am tee time for the west course. Upon arrival the pro asked if we wanted to follow a 16 player group or if we wanted to play the east course with no one to follow. No brainer....we played the east course with absolutely no one in sight and had a great time. Course was a little soggy, but considering the amount of rain we have had lately, very playable. Overall condition of the course was quite good considering a whole season of play on it. Greens had not fully recovered from top dressing but were very playable. I would absolutely recommend playing!!!
tough greens
The course was in great shape. The greens were tough just been airated. I had 40 putts my average putts is 28-30.
Don't waste your time or money
Had a tee time set for Sunday, and I don't think I could have been more disappointed. For starters, I've played there before and hadn't been impressed, and was absolutely shocked to find out it cost $65 to play a round - had I done better research ahead of time I'd have chosen to play one of the many other courses around town that offer a superior experience at a lesser cost, but that's just the beginning.
My biggest gripe is pace of play - it took our foursome nearly 6 hours to complete a round, by far the longest round of golf I've ever played. We had to wait on every single hole, often multiple times. We finished the front 9 in 2:35, and as we pulled up to make the turn, realized there were 6 groups on the 10th hole (2 playing, 4 waiting). We had to wait about 35min to tee off, and should have just left at this point. By the time we had teed off on 10, we were already over 3 hours into our round (my group usually plays 18 in about 3:30). The ranger was at the 10th and we were "joking" with him about the slow pace, and he pretty much just laughed at us and said it's always like this out here, what did you expect? I did not expect that response, I can tell you that much!
For the price, I also expected things to be a little "nicer". Only about half of the ball washers actually had water in them. Some of the wooden hole markers (which double as trash cans) looked like they were about to fall over and hadn't been maintained in many years. The west course is across the street from the clubhouse (few min cart ride), and they only have two beverage vending machines (cash only) at the turn. The sister course stonehedge is set up the same with a course across the street, but they have a nice snack shack at the turn so you don't have to drive all the way back to the clubhouse.
To sum things up, Gull Lake has (partially) opened a new course this year, and I think they'd have been better served by putting their resources into making the existing courses better, rather than price gouging to pay for the new course. I can only recommend playing if you get a steal of a deal and have all day set aside to wait.
West Course @ Gull Lake.
This Course was one of 5 run by the same Management Corp. The unusual fact here is, they have 5 different Greens Supers. So every tract has a different niche for course set ups. The East course starts off easy and steps up the challenge as you go. The tip of the century here is, to play target golf. There are only 4 holes that you can "grip it & rip it". Has anyone played a tract where the #1 & #2 handicap holes were par 3's? I didn't think so! The greens were larger than average with major undulations. It's a 2 sleeve day for the average golfer. It's a fun course but, will test your mettle. We will return to play the sister courses. Golf Now got us awesome rates to play on Labor Day with carts.
Decent Course
Gull Lake West looked more interesting
pace of play
slower groups not letting faster one play thru with 2 or more holes open in front of them. What were the course rangers doing?
West Michigans Best
Played the east corse perfect day, course was in great shape, greens were perfect. Was hitting the ball really good with makes any round good. Really a great course, will be back with my friends.
Woooooo
Great course. Very well maintained. Don't know if I would pay full price to play here but definitely worth it with the hot deal. Will be watching and waiting to play here again
Fun Track
We played on a perfect day weather wise and got a good deal on Golfnow. The course is great. There's elevation changes, large greens and a friendly staff. I will definitely play it again.
