Wallinwood Springs Golf Club

About
Wallinwood Springs Golf Club is bordered by the scenic Grand River on its eastern side. The challenging layout boasts an island green, an island tee, and a peninsula fairway. The golf course has two distinctly different nines, beginning with an open Scottish-links layout before moving onto the back nine, which is enclosed by mature trees. Wind definitely plays a role on the front nine and on the backside of the course there is a 26-acre, man-made lake, where if you're not careful you'll be met with a watery grave on five holes. Extensive mounding is paired with 30 strategically placed sand traps to provide even more challenges. The most difficult hole on the golf course is the par-4 16th, which stretches to more than 400 yards. Golfers will need a long, straight drive from the island tee in order to avoid the water on both sides of the fairway.

Course declines every year
I’ve played this course off & in for over 25 years. It breaks my heart to see this course, the clubhouse & the staff friendliness decline year after year.
I only paid $25 via GolfNow, but even that was too much to pay for this course. Was once a great track, with great conditioning. Nowadays, I refuse to even hit a shot out of their bunkers for fear of ruining a club on the MANY very large rocks in the sand. The growth around the lakes takes away from the beauty of these holes, so don’t understand why they don’t take the time to clean up the brush.
If this course was brought back up to a decent standard, I wouldn’t mind paying $30-$40. They’re letting dollars slip through their fingers by letting this course decline year after year. Back in the day, I played this course at least 10 times a year. I now play once every 2-3 years when I can’t find a tee time anywhere nearby.
Do not recommend this course.
Bring your shot making
At 6300 yards from the whites you better hit it long and straight. A couple easy holes and a lot of challenging ones. They are all fair but hazards lurk at most every turn. Considering the weather has sucked your ball still got a little bounce and roll. A few of the greens have dead fungus spots. The owner is friendly and helpful the other pro behind the counter never looked up when I walked in and cut through the pro shop to hit the bathroom. Fun challenging course, if you get to thinking your good come out and get humbled.
Well kept
Played the course, and even after an all night rain, the course was in good shape. Back nine had some standing water, but otherwise pleasantly surprised at how well the fairways drained and held up.
Continues to disappoint
Haven’t played here in years... and now I know why. Back in the day, my buddies and I loved to play here. The course (& clubhouse) decline every year. The bunkers are some of the worst I’ve ever played (LOTS of rocks... some the size of tennis balls). The course had an outing going on that we weren’t informed of (GolfNow should have mentioned this when I booked the tee time). Incredibly slow play. The pin placements hadn’t been changed for many days, so ragged overgrown cups. Not moving the cups also caused an incredible amount of wear around the area due to foot traffic.
The only way I would play here again would be a $20 green fee.
Sad to see a really nice layout turn into a really low quality golf experience..
Good Value.. Challenging Tee Shot Track
This track offers tremendous value. Where I’m from $31 for 18+cart is an absolute steal on a Sunday. I’ve been out here with family and my cousins took me here to play. I had a great round and a great day on this challenging but fair track. My cousin tells me the summer out here has been very brutal and dry so the conditions we encountered werent surprising. When you cut greens in a drought it can be very delicate. There were definitely burn spots but the majority of green square footage was above average. The speeds were pretty good. A bit slow but not over the top. The bunkers were an absolute disaster but I expect this on a public track and again for $31 I’m not complaining. The key to this course is the tee shot. If you’re spraying it right or left you will find trouble on a majority of the holes. There’s a couple holes where you’re either hitting through a tree lined corridor or have a tiny tiny landing zone. Water is also in play. I love a course where you have to shape shots and hit some irons on 4’s instead of just bashing a driver. I would play this track again.
Disappointing
Course conditions were poor. Fairways decent with some burnt out areas. Greens were smooth and rolling nice, but were very burnt out in areas. Interesting layout and very tight on the back side. But clearly the course has fallen on some hard times and they’re doing the minimum to keep it playable. Too bad, because I’m sure back in the day it was a great place to play.
I teed off bright an early so my review may not be perfect. I can't speak to the pace of play since I was first out on the back with no one behind me. (LOVE THAT!) Greens were in decent shape. They were wet but still pretty fast, so I can imagine in dry conditions the greens would have been quite fast. The greens conditions could use improvement in care. There were a lot of ball marks and unfixed divots, so that was frustrating but also on the golfers to help these conditions. Course set up is a little more challenging than most courses. Always have to have a good tee shot which I enjoy that challenge. So if you have a problem losing balls, don't come here until you're good enough to have a consistent tee shot. I would recommend the Pines or Maple Hill if this is you. Water or woods/brush on either side of the fairway, at least for the back 9.
Lots of Diversity Hope to Hole
Bought a Hot Deal, but the standard greens fee is still worth it for this course. Lots of Diversity hole to hole and some challenging ones there to. On busy days they will pair hot deal purchasers. Not a big deal because the course doesn’t attract too many undesirables. Only issues I have are the reduction of fairway bunkers over time. Many look like they just decided to let the grass grow back in them. Takes some of the challenge away. And the bunkers that remain have many, many stones and rocks in them. Kind of normal for many middle priced West MI courses. All in all a fun place to play.
Good layout and pace of play
The course layout is nice and the pace of play was good. It was okay value for the price you can definitely get better. Bunkers are the biggest downside like playing in a gravel pit
Great course but not kept up. Needs many trees trimmed back (hitting from the back tees some holes have branches blocking one side within 50ft). Beautiful layout and length. This was once a premiere course but is now lacking
Nice course
I played this course site unseen, and it was very nice. Front 9 was much easier than the back!
Great round of golf
What a great round. The course was in excellent shape. The pace of play was great. It flowed smoothly. Great value for he money: I didn’t break any course record but I had s great time.
The course has potential
Pretty average for this early in the year. Still some patchy spots on the green, and bunkers were hard and rocky. Just don't hit your ball in there and you'll be good. The back 9 is quite a bit more challenging than the front. We went to get food at the turn and were severely disappointed when we received cold hot dogs. We're still alive though.
Pretty good day!
Might be back. Course layout if just fine for your average golfer looking to get out. However, might be the slowest course I’ve ever played.. I had a twosome and when we came upon hole 3 it was backed up all the way to the turn and beyond. By hole 11 there was 4 groups jammed on a single hole. we were able to go play the same hole a couple times on more than one occasion. Had there been a group right behind us I would have likely left for the day.
I understand spring course conditions and you get a pass for that but I never once saw a ranger attempting to keep the pace of play going... Four groups on one hole is completely unacceptable.
Love the back side
Just like my ladies, I enjoyed the front, and I loved the back.
Front 9 is always a bit slow and kind of beat up in places, but the back is in great shape and typically wide open so you can golf as slow or fast as you want.
This is one of my favorites for the money in West Michigan. Highly recommended, just be patient on the front.
Nice layout
Had a few bad spots on the greens but very receptive on the approach shot and putting was good. Pretty open on the front comparison with the back cut out of the swamp and river. All and all I would play again for the price.
Lots of Potential
This course has lots of potential with its layout along the Grand River. Unfortunately, the course maintenance is in very bad shape with blight on the greens and weeds growing in the bunkers. A shame really. If you get a good price on GolfNow I would play it otherwise....find a different course.
