Swamp course
The course seems like it was built on a swamp. The fairways were part dirt and part grass. The pace of play was horrible. We were going to play 18 but left early because it was a joke.
Beware of the greens!!!
The course is pretty interesting. Not too difficult but an interesting layout. No two holes are the same. But the greens i thought were pretty deceptive. Putting is the best part of my game. I had numerous putts from within ten feet and I only made one. Could have been just a bad putting day but there were just a lot of little breaks I just didn't see. Overall a good day at the golf course
downing farms
Played from blue tees, was still kinda short. Price paid on golf now was well worth it
for still being cold temperature
Very nice course, it is actually in Salem, Michigan not Northville. for the temperatures been extremely cold and we had it extended long winter the course was in pretty good shape the trees hasn't bloomed yet the putting green was not hard but you can tell the course is well manicured and taking care of. When I pulled up to it up into a dirt parking lot I'm not expecting the course to be in the condition. Farm land area. Staff was freindly and accommodatin .
Fun course
We really enjoyed the course, learned quick you have to be able to hit it straight. Tall grass lines the fairways makes it tough, if not impossible to find errant shots.
Nice course for great price
This course has shorter yardage, but still offers great challenges for beginners. Some greens are smaller, not so flat, with water fronts hazards. It is very interesting to play in this great course.
Nice Course but boy it could be so much more
For the price I was thrilled. This is a Geaorgeous course that just needs attention. If they put some money into this it would fetch top dollar (and than I couldn't play there so maybe I dont want them to fix it :) ) but it has sooo much potential. The layout is very pretty. The staff was nice. No problems with Rangers like Hickory Creek has being rude. The complaints I would have is the sand traps are overgrown with grass. It would be so nice if they would add sand and fix this. There are some spots on the fairways that need attn too. THe other complaint is the greens are not all the same speed. I get used to a slow green and the next one is a lot faster. Makes putting tough. Also the dirt roads for the carts are ehh. The other problem I had was the pace of play . 3.5 hours for the front nine. For some reason the back nine didn't have anyone on it. Took an hour for the back thank goodness. Real slow people and no one speeds them up but I'd rather have that than rangers barking at you. Still the scenery is geourgeous with some very pretty holes so I would definitely come back.
great value
booked last minute accommodating open layout better than expected
good place to learn
What a great day for golf at an exteremely economical price! I did not "wait" for slow players except on the 9th and 18th holes. I was able to work on my game while taking the challenge of long and short holes, some with unusual twists (an 80 yard par 3?)
The front nine does not have any character.
It was a good deal on golfnow however the drive was long and I thought the course would be much better.
Paid too much for the course.
The staff at Downing Farms is great, very friendly. However, I felt we paid too much for what we got out of the course. Tee boxes, fairways, greens, etc. all need quite a bit of attention. It appeared that the course does not drain well. There were several puddles and mounds of mud throughout. I have paid the same price (and sometimes less) and have had much better experiences.
Short and tired
This course gets lots of play and it looks a bit tired.
Very playable even from the blues.
Good location is what makes it popular.
Great deal!
Decided to drive the 45 minutes from my house to Downing Farms, because $13 for 18 holes is quite the deal. Turned out to be well worth the drive, because the course was delightful. Challenging holes with scenery all around. No need to play conservatively, as the course is completely engulfed in wildlife rather than houses and parking lots. You may lose several balls through 18 holes, but if you look hard enough, you can find as many as you lost. This was a great place to play, and challenging for a beginner like myself. I will be back!
Hidden Gem
I have been dismissing Downing Farms because of the length (<5900 yds from blue tee). There were no other courses with discount tee times the other day, so I decided to give it a try. Wow, I was pleasantly surprised. The course is short, but deceptively so (similar to how Merion was). There are many short par 4's of about 300 yds or so and couple of short par 3's. That's why the overall length is shorter, but there's nothing 'EASY' about this course. The greens are pretty small and they are tricky. Fairways are not the widest around and there are a couple of par 4's with good length of 420+.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised and will definitely come back here.
Golfnow price vs. course rates
Make sure you call the course and ask about their twilight rates. GolfNow was charging $10 more than the $18 rate they usually have for twilight. Thankfully the staff was honest and helped me save some money.
The staff was awesome. The greens are deceiving, they are much slower than they appear.
Overall fun course. A little off the beaten path which is nice. Tight fairways. Slow but very nice greens.
Beautiful Course
Reminds me of an up north course, very nice staff and nature around each hole, good mix of difficulty... Not enough water though
Bunched up but challenging
We were surprised by the difficulty of the course but it seemed to cause a big delay with only one foursome 4 groups ahead of us. The back 9 we waited 5-10 minutes every hole. Not good.
Good value and the course was maintained. We will go back in hopes the pace of play is better.
Not bad for a saturday morning
My twosome played 9 in under 2 hours. The greens were a little slow but in GREAT shape. Stay out of the rough it is deep.
