For the price, not as good as advertised
Let's start with the positives. Nice club house. Lots of available amenities. GPS on carts was accurate. Good overall conditions for mid October.
But... this course is definitely not worth what they're charging when compared to many others in the area. First, the pace of play was atrocious. 5 1/2 hours with a tee time that was very, very early in the day. When a course gets back up within the first hour of opening for the day, they aren't playing attention. They have very accurate GPS location on the carts. They can determine who the problem groups are. All it would take to solve the problem is a communication system and active, involved rangers. If I'm paying over $100, I expect to enjoy the round and not be standing continuously waiting to play. We as a golfing community have to stop accepting 5 hour rounds as acceptable and call it out. As it was, there was not a single ranger to be seen. I've played 23 different courses on weekends over the last 2 years. This was the first among them that didn't have a visible ranger presence on the course. Not that it would have mattered. Every person we saw working was a teenager.
As for the course; if you're going to portray it as a high dollar, premium layout, then there shouldn't be fifty range balls in the very first fairway/right rough. The practice range runs parallel to the first hole, with only a mogle hill separating them to hide the course from the range. To have that many balls at 9 in the morning, with many of them mowed in half, it gave the first impression of it being a municipal track. Inexcusable to have to be looking for you ball amongst the range variety. Yes, they were yellow, but still. Plus you had to wonder if you were going to get pelted, because no one on the range would see you to yell four. And if you're on the first hole and someone on the range has to yell four... well, you get the point. They need a net, but to put one up would ruin the illusion that it's a 'premium' course.
My other observation is that it's not really a memorable layout. There's a lot of the same. Yes, there are a couple of gimmicky holes... 4, 9 and 10 come to mind. Shorter holes that 'make you think'. (2 of them became cart path only, which negates the GPS system. I expect that on par 3's, but other holes seemed random.) But I felt more than once that I was playing a hole a second time later in the round.
The route itself was rather confusing regarding it's identity. Is it a links course? Not really. Is it marsh laden? No. Water only comes into play on 2 holes. It definitely plays on the nature preserve natural habitat angle, but it's not to the point you feel you're in the wilderness. The unsightly high power lines to the south and nearby homes on some holes remind you quickly you're not isolated from civilization.
For all it's pretending to be, Golden Fox is really no better than the other courses at Fox Hills. In fact, by far the best among them is Strategic Fox. If I were to go back, that would be the only one I'd play.
need more staff
Course was packed and in great shape. Very slow pace all day. Our only complaint was that Cart girls left at 2:00 on a hot and sunny day because "they had been there since 8:-00 am". So the whole course died of thirst for the next 6 hours.
Great place to play and one of best practice facilities at a public course ever
This course is a beast when the rough is wet and the greens have some moisture
As the title says, this course is a beast. I played from the same length tees (gold) as I do at home on a tight course with VERY small and firm bermuda greens. The spin I was seeing on approach shots today with these softer bent grass greens was simply amazing. However, the great were like putting on a wet slick mound of concrete once you were there because they were ridiculously fast. Note, that isn't a complaint, but more of a reflection that I need to practice putting on the tile floors at home before I get back on this fast of greens!
Great track in great condition with extremely friendly staff!
The course is in great shape and the greens are beautiful. From the initial “Hi, welcome..” and everyone else we encountered was very friendly and welcoming. Enjoy your round…we always do!
Extremely Disappointed
Let me start by saying this is a beautiful, well-maintained course that I genuinely enjoy playing. However, the tee sheet management has become horrendous. I booked a twilight tee time hoping to sneak in a quick 9 after work, but after 2 hours, I walked off the course at the 5th tee box. Nearly every hole had 3—sometimes even 4—groups backed up and waiting.
To be fair, I was warned in the pro shop that play might be “a little slow” due to league play. In my opinion, if multiple leagues are occupying both sides of the course, public tee times shouldn’t be available. Even if I had stuck it out, there’s no way I would have finished the 9 holes I paid $40 for.
Very disappointing. I’ll be looking to play elsewhere on weekdays moving forward.
Decent greens but not worth the money
Paid 75 dollars at 3pm on a Saturday. The greens rolled nice and were somewhat challenging. But there weren’t many memorable holes. Nothing stood out. They are charging the same price as eagle crest in Ypsilanti, and more than Stonebridge in Ann Arbor. For the price there are way better options in the area. I probably won’t be coming back.
A nice track
Having played the classics at fox hills many times and for a league, I love this spot but had never played the golden fox until recently. We got off to a bumpy start when the course insisted on charging cart fees for our group when I was certain they were noted as included in the prepaid booking. After deliberation, they eventually refunded our 80$ but it made for a little irritation and chaos upon arrival. Luckily everything went much better from here on out. Course is forgiving apart from some tall tricky grasses, condition was great as were the greens. We never waited for more than a couple minutes on each hole. It was challenging but not punishing, I’d enjoy a trip back if the price was right!
