8 Hour round
I have never seen a golf course more overbooked.
Not only did we have our tee time delayed 20 minutes, when we pulled up to the tee box on 1 there must have been 20 people waiting in line to tee off. It took us a full hour just to play the first 2 holes. It took 3.5 hours just to play the front. So by the time it’s all said and done with the delay...almost 4 hours to play 9 holes. By the time we made the turn we were so frustrated we left after only playing the front 9, even though we payed for a full 18.
The course itself isn’t bad but wow is it poorly ran. If you enjoy spending 90% of your round waiting doing nothing, playing for 7-8 hours, and wasting your money be my guest.
I can’t recommend this course after that experience. I will not be going back.
Decent links course. Incredibly slow play
Course was in real good condition considering all the rain recently. Only issue from that perspective is that a lot of the tee boxes weren't flat. Not a huge deal but something that is a pet peeve of mine. If you haven't played here it is a links course with multiple short par 4s and a par 5 that restricts you from using driver off the tee if you hit past 240. So you wont be hitting driver on 14 holes here. The real big problem with my round was the pace of play. I assume it was a combination of overbooking and a lack of a ranger out on the course. Was waiting at least 10 minutes on every tee. 20 minutes on the first two tees. It's a solid course but I would not recommend playing it on the weekends.
Slow
This course is normally very fun to play but because the course scheduled too many groups at one time it was very slow. I had my tee time bumped because the group behind me complained to the club house and then the starter got radioed to let them jump ahead. I didn’t mind to much at first until we found out this was maybe the slowest foursome in the world.
I like the course and it was in great shape but this experience will make me second guess booking here again.
Awesome course!
Great guys that work there! Awesome links style course, great pace of play too!
Experienced Golfers Preferred
Haven’t played here since HS back in 2002. But boy, was this course brutal. Ignoring the wet conditions, this course has too many blind shots. Tee shots and approach where you can’t see the green or the pin from normal hole elevation. You really have to know the layout prior. Only complaint I have is that for a par 71, there are too many long par 3s. Almost all but one were 195+. The greens were very bouncy and the greens ran true once the sun came out. They should eliminate one or two of the ridiculous pot bonkers. I slipped coming up the wood steps and that could have been a serious injury since the one green-side was about a 20+ foot drop.
Beautiful Day
It is a great course for the money. Not many bad shots are punished, because they heather was mostly gone, along with any woods on the course. I would play it again.
Slow first nine
Had a threesome of beginners in front of us on the front nine. They took so many practice swings that they even made me tired watching them. Course would have gotten five stars except there were many fresh ball marks that should have been repaired.
Clubhouse and Pace of Play
Course was way better than expected after checking in at Clubhouse(Barn). Golf Carts are a touch old and was surprised at how many twosomes were placed behind us, we felt rushed.
Beautiful Rolling Green Fairways for Miles to See
I played this course using a hot deal. Tremendous value for what I paid. The green fairways were beautifully manicured, greens were in excellent shape. The pins were in very tough positions only a flag stick away from the greens edge.
My only issue was pace of play. They had a few twosomes and threesomes with young children, learning the game, slowing the groups behind. (On one par three we had 4 groups waiting to hit).
I understand that kids need to learn the game, but the Myth has a beauty par 3 up the road, and it’s not my job to tell people where they can and cannot play.
So....
In the end, price point was excellent, staff were friendly, course was in excellent condition....
Only issue was pace of play, my partner and I enjoyed our day and had a couple extra pops while we waited around in between shots.
If you can handle waiting in between shots than this is a must play.
Fun Track Links Look
Have played Blackheath several times. It has a links look with some fescue but minus the pot bunkers. I played the blue tees. Challenging par 3s. #7 and 15 have more room than it appears in front of the greens. #8 is a par 5 whose tee shot can be a bit confusing if you have not played the course. The fairway goes out well to the right and then bends back to the left. #11 is a tough par 5 with a couple of bunkers on the right that you do not see from the tee. There is lots of room left. The 3 finishing holes are challenging. 16 is a long par 4. #17 is a par 5 that forces most of us to lay up off the tee and plays uphill to the green. You can see almost all of the course from the 17th green. #18 is again a long par 4.
Poor course layout, badly maintained greens & loud music
Poor course layout has golf balls coming at you from several directions on some holes. Greens are in poor shape - lots of unrepaired ball marks and generally run down. We observed / heard loud blaring music being played by several patrons. Old, beat up golf carts. Plenty of better choices in the area for golf.
Best course for the money in Oakland County
This course is easily the best course for the money in Oakland County. It Is always in excellent condition, the layout is challenging but forgiving, but more importantly it is fun! Bang for the buck, there is none better. Period.
They really pack em in there
Course sets tee-times up 6minutes apart from each other. Unless you get out on a weekday prior to 8:30am, plan on a 5+ hour round.
Fairways and greens were in great shape, tee boxes are a little wonky here and there.
The staircase up to the tee box on hole #15 seems like a safety/health risk. They built the stairs over a rotting, existing set of stairs and didn’t bother to rebuild, instead just “covered the old stairs up”.
3 hour front nine before getting a rain check
Zero control of golfers by the course staff. The starters aren’t worth a darn, they just read books and twiddle their thumbs. We had 8 carts on every tee box during the front nine. Not sure why they even have tee times if they just send groups out whenever...
