Stony Creek Golf Course

About
Stony Creek is part of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks system and many locals consider it to be one of its gems. There aren't any residences near the golf course, giving it a secluded feel and providing unhindered views from the elevated tees. The course opened in 1976 but underwent a major renovation that included re-sculpting the bunkers and reconditioning the entire golf course. The layout features several doglegs and a surprising amount of elevation changes. The fairways are tightly lined with trees and bunkers are strategically placed along the greensides and landing zones. There are also lakes and ponds that come into play on six holes on the front nine and three on the back. Stony Creek's par-3 17th is the most memorable water hole and the 14th is also notable for its tiny "postage stamp" green.

Poorly Managed
I arrived 20 minutes before my T time as a single and didn’t T off until 20 minutes after my T time. There was legitimately 6 different groups waiting to T off. This is at like 1pm on a Thursday. I get paired up with a father/son twosome. The son flew in from it of town so was sharing his dads clubs. Finally our time to T off and the starter stops us to tell us they need to rent a set of clubs. Like bro you had over 30 minutes to bring that up. While renting the clubs they asked “what if we didn’t have an extra $30 on us for the rental?” The response “then you can’t afford to golf.” My broth in Christ, this isn’t Augusta.. it’s a Metropark. I play 9 holes and make it to the turn where there is 6 different groups on both 9s again. I get in line for the back and after about 10 minutes I find a starter and ask what’s going on. He tells me there is a league going and I can’t finish the 18 I paid for… zero mention of this at any point during the many interactions with course staff. When you have a league going off at 4 and are blocking everyone else, mention that to your customers.
Overall the actual course is fine, not great, not awful. Cool nature vibe being in the metro park but some of the greens are pretty bad, like pothole in the middle bad. But power tripping staff that don’t know how to manage a course and overbooking T times makes this place worth skipping over. Don’t forget it cost $10 to even enter the park so factor that into your budget.
Rangers need to relax
Had 8 people broken into 2 groups of 4. Played 18 holes and the ranger was following our group for at-least 6-7 holes. Tried telling us to play only best ball and change which Tees we should hit from. Absolutely annoying! We did not hold up pace of play as we were waiting for groups in front of us and the group behind us was full of Karen’s that wouldn’t stop whining. We let them through for the back nine and then the Karen’s started holding us up because they couldn’t hit 200 yards. Rangers know this as well but still chose to annoy everyone. The course is good but tell ur rangers to stop following groups when they can already see they everyone is moving along.
Fantastic aesthetics and course
Course is very much away from the hustle and bustle, making you feel like you’re outdoors In the woods. Not sure what happened but we got stuck at Behind several groups starting off which was initially offputting. The course itself is awesome though and would definitely recommend
Course was in great shape. Nice challenging course. Greens keepers have fun with hole placements on the weekends.
Unfriendly staff
During my time at Stoney Creek golf course the customer service representative behind the desk Me informed me That I was lucky to play the course Because I had my wife as a rider. Mind you, I am a disabled vet and he told us We’re lucky to be on a state funded course , during a time when we are supposed to remember those who served and lost their lives. thanks for the appreciation to the guy behind the desk. I won’t be back.
And it made complete sense that they had a problem with me bringing a rider, but the group in front of me had two kids who whiffed at the ball a dozen times every single time and didn’t even have shoes on and they’re OK with that
Great afternoon of golf
It was nice to walk in the clubhouse and be warmly greeted by the staff. Pace of play on this Friday afternoon was excellent as our foursome played in 2:10 minutes. It has a feel of up north course as wildlife is abundant throughout the golf course. The course is in great shape greens could be a little softer.
Greens good. Tee boxes bad
Greens and fairways were in good shape. Couple under maintenence spots out there. Bunkers were nice.
The tee boxes were in bad shape though. Please level them and repair grass.
Great Course
Beautiful course, well spaced out, greens and bunkers well taken care of priced fairly
Great Staff
The staff was super!!! Check easy with the app and starter did an excellent job getting us ready to avoid major groups!!! Had a fast paced round with that advice!!!!
Course in good condition, especially for so early in season. Beautiful scenery, deer on several holes. Unfortunately it was cart path only and it turned into a 5 hour round. Don’t believe they have a ranger.
Overall a nice course
I enjoy playing Stoney Creek. That being said they have the worst tee box in Macomb County on the 17th hole. It is nothing more than a dirt pile with the occasional grass patch. They need to trim the trees around the box, then maybe grass will grow.
The course, other than the 17th tee box, was in good shape. There were signs of off season work that was done, but that will improve as time goes on. The greens seemed to run true.
