Hole 10 Photo submitted by u314164227538 on 07/08/2023
Greatly improved, excellent value.
I hadn't played Mississippi National Highlands for several years. I was pleasantly surprised at the improvements and the overall conditions of the course. The maintenance and enhancements I noticed were timely and helped improve the quality of play. The staff was incredibly courteous and went out of their way to be accommodating. Since I was one of the first ones off, the pace of play was outstanding and I finished 18 holes playing as a single and roughly 2.5 hours.
Location
Really long drives in between a lot of the holes. Not designed very well but really good scenery
Great Day at the Hiighlands
A slight rain scared a lot of people off on a Friday morning. Our twosome (Groupon) played behind a foursome and used slow times in the fairways to look for balls in the woods until the green was clear and it was okay to hit. The greens themselves were perfect and the fairways were very green and well manicured. The rain lasted two hours and the last nine was quite pleasant. Oh, I almost forgot, we found 91 balls during the round.
I love the course because it has 6 par-3's (152, 150, 135, 124, 84, 149).
Scenic and fun layout
A very scenic and fun layout with 6 par 3s and 5 par 5s. Several holes have dramatic elevation changes which add to the appeal. The course is not overly long and while there are a few holes with some length there are some much shorter scoring holes to take advantage of. The pace of play has been terrific and all I've come in contact with (pro-shop, players on the course, maintenance staff) very friendly. My only regret is that I live an hour away from this little gem. .
Dogleg left
The draw shot comes into play a lot. The tree lined fairways can make approach shot a punch out shot. Tough course but fun..
Highlands is the best course I've ever played
I came up from Indiana to visit family from Minnesota and let me tell you there is nothing like this course in Indiana. The elevation changes are crazy. The course was extremely well maintained aside from a dead patch on hole 15 I think. Pace of play was rather slow. Had a bunch of 3 and 4 somes in front of us. They slowed the pace of play down a lot. I finished in 4 hours and I played alone with my wife riding along. Course was challenging and makes you think about your shots. Accuracy is more rewarding than distance. Indiana most of the courses you can just swing away with a fairly normal shot. Not here. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who is not local trying to find a really unique course to play.
Saturday golf
My only complaint is that the beverage cart only showed up once. We were on the 8th tee and never saw the beverage service after that. I recommend that more than one beverage cart be of service.
dissapointed
Sand traps are crusted brown dirt. Course maintenance lacking evidenced by crumbling cart paths and significant weeds throughout fairways.
Highlands
I played very early in the year. The course was in really good shape for that time of the year.
Early Spring Outing
Having not played Mississippi National (MNGC) for a number of years, we were excited to return. The 3rd week of March may not be the best time however to play this challenging course. Greens were in good shape, fairways in most areas were good. Cart paths on Highlands very good - no wash outs. Parts of the course were being remodeled - good modifications - but mud was an issue a number of times. Because of the trees and shade the course was still soft. Very well worth a trip in May, June, July, August, September, Leaves in October can be an issue.
Nice fall day for golf
The course was in pretty decent shape after being closed last year. The greens ran true and the fairways were lush, except that there was a fair amount of leaves on some of the holes. I saw no indication that any of the holes had been blown clear of leaves, but it did look like they had been mowed. The bunkers left a lot to be desired. It didn't look like they had been touched for a long time. I hope the new managers clear up the bunkers as it is a fun course to play. I said fun, not easy.
Unique Course
This course is really unique because the elevation changes are unmatched. There are so many hills, obstacles, and challenges! You have to take a cart, walking not allowed at this course, on a couple of the drives from hole to hole, it takes about 3 minutes to get to the next hole by cart! It's definitely a course to play, you just don't find many courses around with this type of elevation, well kept up, and nice true greens. As you can imagine, lots of "club ups & club downs", a lot of thinking and imagination needed!
Drive it well a must here
The Lowlands is a walkable track (unlike the Highlands) that is tree lined with some long par 4s that require both long and reasonably accurate tee shots. Almost all if the par 4s & 5s are dogleg left or right - if you can cut corners accurately you can shave distance off the hole.
The greens are fairly large & most have some type of ridge that disects the green into a lower and upper portion. If your on the wrong section relative to the flag, 2 putting is a challenge. I over read break on most holes as it didn't break anywhere near what I thought. Fairways are in good shape but on some holes seemed very spongy. Greens also in good shape although green speed seemed inconsistent. Other aspects of course need maintenance. Bring water as i didn't see any on the course. Inexpensive to play & good value.
Great & fun course
Challenging course. Each hole is different. Well kept up, excellent value.
this course has great views and change of elivation
This was the first time playing the Highlands since the city of Redwing took it over. The greens and fairways were in very good shape. Only a couple of greens had some damage but putted well. Traps were terrible, just like they were when the previous management group had the course. The places where they replaces sand traps for grass bunkers were in bad shape. because of the over all condition being what they were the cost should have been lower. Once they get the traps in shape and improve their fairways, then I could see paying more.
Wow!
We came from Illinois for a family function and my brother inlaw and I decided that if we were driving 6 hours for their aunts 80th birthday party that we deserved to squeeze in a round. We were the first off at 7am and had the course to ourselves. We see nothing close to this terrain in flat Illinois. Worth it just for the scenery. Truly beautiful. The course is really challenging and fun. It's tight so hit it straight. Only negative was no drinking water on course and no kitchen/bar but looks like that is all being redone.
Fantastic course
We decided to play the Highlands course based on previous reviews and we were not disappointed! What a hidden gem. Challenging holes, fantastic views, no crowds and peace and quiet. Course was in great shape. Greens rolled true. Overall great time. We will definitely make the trek here again.
Great Signature Hole Makes the Round
Mississippi National has two courses, Highlands and Lowlands. I've never played Lowlands but leading up to this round I asked around for recommendations between the two and nearly every one came up as a vote for the Highlands.
Overall this course is a pretty sweet design carved into the bluffs near the Mississippi River. Although there isn't any riverside holes, there is one par 3, #17, that is worth your green fee. A tee shot with an over 150 foot drop to the green from the tee box is a unique opportunity provided by the Highlands course.
Only other thing I'll say is defiantly take a cart, you cannot walk this course.
Mississippi National-Lowlands
Course is in good shape after the Spring/summer monsuns ended. No temp greens remain. Somewhat a target course but pleanty of opportunity to let the big dog eat. 3:40hr round on a Saturday, priceless.
Excellent course and time
Course and day was superior in excellent condition and pace was awesome. would recommend and will often.
