Great piece of land, good conditions for March, great value, abysmal pace if play
Multiple slow singles and twosomes waiting at a tees together but not playing together, carrying in conversations when the fairway are open, and generally being oblivious to pace a play. Saw 1 ranger who made no effort to combine groups and educate them about a good place.
This is an great piece of land, a fun and interesting course, and a fair value. I'd play here regularly if the pace was reasonable. 3 hours for 9 holes is unacceptable. I usually walk 9 in under 1.5. I won't play here again unless I'm going off very early or the course is empty. Get a few rangers, educate the clients about proper pace, and you'll get more volume through easily paying for the extra rangers.

New owners are really trying!
(Note: in my book very few courses deserve 5 stars)
I gave up on Hilltop a couple of years ago. It was becoming a goat pasture. A beautiful goat pasture, mind you, but less and less playable. Former owners didn’t maintain the tee boxes...the greens were beaten to death and being taken over by brown patchy fungus...trash everywhere...no ranger...and worst of all they weren’t trimming the trees, which made play incredibly frustrating. You almost couldn’t see the course for all the tree branches overhanging the fairways. Nobody I know is good enough to thread the needle on every shot. And nobody wants to walk through litter ridden, overgrown wilderness to get from green to tee. Hilltop is such a beautiful piece of property! It really was a shame.
Yesterday’s experience was so much better! Tee boxes are being overhauled. Weird swampy patches are being replaced with playable ground. The greens are at winter shag length (as they’re supposed to be in winter) but are in great shape. Steve the ranger was terrific! Trash cans are being emptied on the regular. And TREES ARE BEING TRIMMED, DEAD WOOD HAULED OUT, AND OVERGROWN AREAS THINNED OUT! To me, that’s huge!
Play Hilltop! And when you do, help them out: pick up your trash, replace your divots (it takes 15 seconds), and repair your pitch marks on the greens (3 seconds). The new owners are investing in the place, trying to make it worth our time. With some cooperation and good golf etiquette from players, I can see Hilltop turning into a gem.

better than expected
it's not a 5 star course... nor is it a hidden gem or anything like that, but it's also a lot better than I was expecting and outperforms all the negative reviews.
it's early March, was clean, decent pace for the most part, I really enjoy the level changes.
My complaints are the little creeks seem to be 230-250 from the tee box, so they come in to play when you'd rather have them 200 and go over them.

Course always in playable shape deep into winter
Hilltop is a good tough course with all the challenges of a Michigan course. With a touch of rain today it was a good 50 degree round with some factored wind. December usually gives a good weekend or 2 for a round at Hilltop,

Great course! Unfortunately for me my first time playing it was late in the season. It was really busy and the pace of play was really bad. The course however, is great !

Not worth it.
They decided to aerate the greens and not tell anyone, on top of that the greens are already a mess; they cover any bald spots up with sand which as you can imagine messes with how the ball bounces and rolls. Not awful but could be 10000% better if they tended to the course like any other course does

If you like waiting
Overbooked course, tee times don't matter here. 3 groups that had times after us started before us. At least 2 groups waiting on every tee box. Course management here is trash as well. Greens are like concrete and are tore up. If you miss the fairway at all your hitting off of dirt/clay. Don't waste your time coming here

Better shape than most
For the money this course is in beautiful condition and challenging. I wish I would have played here more this past summer.

Will not go back
Missed scheduled T time because carts were not available.
T times stacked too close together caused slow play.
Greens in poor condition.
Took 5 and 1/2 hours to play 18 holes. Marshals not controlling flow.
Course conditions were not great. Found ourselves hitting off dirt several times in fairways and greens were patchy and uneven in several spots.
