Love the Layout, Horrible Pace of Play/Course Management
The layout is great and this course good be great. However, pace of play is not enforced, no Ranger during PM play. It took over 2.5 hours to play 9 & left after 14 holes - 4.25 hours. We called the pro shop after 3rd hole because we were already backed up, waiting 10+ minutes at every tee box. Even after contacting pro shop, the pace of play did not improve.
Pro is rude
I left my rangefinder on the golf cart when I called back the pro was very rude and unhelpful. Never go there again unless they hire a new pro.
A Newly Renovated Gem Of A Course
We heard that Black Bear had been recently renovated and wanted to experience it. After reading all of the bad comments from previous years the recent comments were all very favorable. This course is extremely challenging and has great terrain with some steep elevations and many blind shots and shots over ravines. Lots of elevation and some steep hills to climb but it was worth it. Also, for the price we paid it was a steal! They also have a Par 3 Practice Hole to start out on ... which is a bit confusing if you don't know about it. Or you can skip the practice hole and go to the first tee. Also, the green at No. 18 is over a small lake/pond and can ruin a good score if you hit the water instead of the green. Also, a nice bar and grille inside and a small outdoor patio that makes it nice to watch golfers coming up 18. I would definitely recommend this course. It had more improvements to be made, but what the new owners have done so far deserves to be a must try course!
Unique layout
Love the idea of a practice hole to start. Fairways and greens in excellent condition. Has numerous unique and interesting holes with elevation changes. Several blind shots would benefit from a bell.
Overall was a decent course. Fairways were a little bit thicker than they should be and there were some dry patches on the greens but overall for the price in the condition it is in I would come back and play again. My biggest problem is the pace of play. I started at 11:30 and didn’t get done until almost 5pm. Definitely need to have a better system for pace of play.
Great track
The course layout was always great, but the improvement in maintenance has been incredible. Better every time I play it. The new clubhouse, restaurant, bourbon bar, and simulators really set it apart. Great value as well
Fairways need to be addressed
Had a great time playing here but it wasn’t because of the course it was because of the the couple I played with… the fairways were just way to long and it was the equivalent of rough in most areas I play! The greens were so slow which was another issue… DO A BETTER JOB!
Great improvements to the course
Been a few years since playing, last time under different ownership. The new management is doing a very good job restoring this course back to its original shape. Excellent that they have opened up the grill and has a very nice selection of meals to select from.
Looking forward to playing the Black Bear in the future.
Really nice course
Course was in excellent condition. Not super difficult but still offers a challenge with the different hole styles. Compares very well to the fancy courses but at a much better value.
