Great track
The course layout was always great, but the improvement in maintenance has been incredible. Better every time I play it. The new clubhouse, restaurant, bourbon bar, and simulators really set it apart. Great value as well
Fairways need to be addressed
Had a great time playing here but it wasn’t because of the course it was because of the the couple I played with… the fairways were just way to long and it was the equivalent of rough in most areas I play! The greens were so slow which was another issue… DO A BETTER JOB!
Great improvements to the course
Been a few years since playing, last time under different ownership. The new management is doing a very good job restoring this course back to its original shape. Excellent that they have opened up the grill and has a very nice selection of meals to select from.
Looking forward to playing the Black Bear in the future.
Really nice course
Course was in excellent condition. Not super difficult but still offers a challenge with the different hole styles. Compares very well to the fancy courses but at a much better value.
I always love the layout of this course, but the conditions have been poor the last couple of years. However, I’ve seen a great turnaround and the course is very nice now. Would highly recommend it to anyone.
Up and coming course
This is a great little course. Every season it's better and better. The staff is amazing and the food is really good.
Fun and friendly place!
We have golfed in Michigan for many years and this was our first time at Black Bear. The course was in great shape other than a little problem on one green that looked like they were having a fungus issue. Otherwise everything was great and friendly staff. And we loved that we got a “ practice hole” to start!! Never have seen this at another course what a nice little bonus!
Michigan golf does not disappoint!
Black Bear is Back!!!!!
I played this course many times in the past. Wonderful layout! However in the last few years the course fell into disarray and they did not keep the condition of fairways, greens, and tee boxes well at all. My kids were calling it the “ brown bear” because nothing was green. But now there are new owners and it’s back to “ good condition “. Greens are smooth and green. Medium speed. I prefer faster but these are acceptable and well kept. Fairways are green. Not mowed as short as I’d prefer but more than acceptable. Tee boxes are good. It’s back! Great value for the money. And restaurant is good as well!
Should not be on Golf Now
I left a review earlier about the 6 some in front of us and forgot to mention that when we went in and complained after the round the girl behind the desk said “if you don’t like it, go play somewhere else”. Believe me, we will never be back.
This course should not be on Golf Now as an option.
They allow 6 people to play in groups as a “scramble”. The 6 some in front of us played in bare feet and flip flops. We called on the 12th hole and they came out and the 6 some let a four some and a three some play through until it was our turn to watch the antics, Real golfers in a 6 some might be able to play a scramble at a four some pace of play but bare feet and flip flops golfers? Do not play this course. I won’t even mention the long grass fairways that make it difficult to pull out a fairway wood. Disgusting round on a beautiful Michigan day.
Most Improved in Northern Michigan
First hole to start your round is called the 19th hole. Nice par three to warm up before your 1st scoring hole.
* great greens with challenging topography.
* great value for 18 holes with a cart.
* very well maintained golf course.
* Friendly staff, and full service clubhouse overlooking the challenging 18th hole
Overall, I enjoy playing this golf course just off I-75 just North of Gaylord.
I want to apologize for the experience you had today. Our pace of play is 4 hrs 30 minutes. I as the owner was informed of the situation, by the young lady behind the counter, the Golf Pro and and our irrigation tech, We try to make everyone happy , we try to keep the pace of play and we try to eliminate groups of over 4 from playing together. I reiterated that to our employees. We are still learning and making adjustments.
