Hillsborough Country Club
About
Hillsborough Country Club is tucked away amongst the foothills of the Sourland Mountains. The golf course overlooks the beautiful Amwell Valley, sprawling across lush rolling hills gently sprinkled with mature trees. The par-70 layout is player friendly enough for all skill levels, it is even gentle enough for beginners. While it may not be what you're looking for if you want a long and challenging test, it's great for a casual round with a few tricky surprises. Accuracy will be generously rewarded but the golf course isn't overly punishing if you're slightly errant. Golfers will come across a fair amount of strategically placed sand traps as well as the occasional water hazard. In addition to the course, you can get even more short game practice in on Hillsborough Country Club's practice chipping and putting greens and there is also a driving range available.

I will never play here again
I am writing this review because of the condition of the Hillsborough Country Club. I typically play 2 rounds per week and have done so for the last 35 years. I play almost exclusively at municipal courses so I am not what would be considered a snob. I played the Hillsborough Country Club golf course in September 2015 with a foursome. I read some of the other reviews about this golf course and cannot believe that some of these individuals played the same course that I played. I can only imagine that anyone who gives this golf course anything other than a poor rating must be related to some of the employees, or it is the employees themselves who are hoping the golf course doesn’t close.
Starting with the tee boxes, they are in horrendous condition. They are uneven and bumpy – often times it was hard to even find a piece of grass on which to put your ball there were so many divots. It is clear that no one does anything to maintain them.
About 5 of the greens had such a severe slope that no matter where you landed your ball, it ran completely off the green. My foursome is made up of individuals with 15 to 20 handicaps. When we would get a good shot, we wanted to be rewarded, not penalized by the ball running off the green. The same was true for the fairways. Often you could hit the ball in a perfect line in the fairway only to have it trickle out of bounds because the fairways are so severely sloped and there was no watering whatsoever. It was like playing on a paved parking lot.
You can tell that the golf course is not maintained just by looking at the cart paths. They are paved and look like they are about 40 years old. They are full of cracks, bumps and weeds. Often you had to drive your cart over them very slowly so as not to have your teeth jarred or your neck or back hurt. The sand traps were never raked in their lives. Some of them had little ditches running through them from rain which must have happened several weeks ago and there is no maintenance whatsoever.
The owner of this golf course is not a golfer. He is a real estate investor. He has owned this golf course for many, many years and clearly does not care about it. I understand that he runs it at a loss intentionally as a write-off. None of the individuals in my foursome, including myself, will ever play there again. We will not even play there if there are no tee times available anywhere at any time and even if it were free. Instead of being a relaxing, stress-free day, it was totally unenjoyable and frankly my entire day was ruined due to the abysmal condition of this golf course. Proceed at your own risk.
Play it when you have a deal
The course conditions were great. I have played this course twice and both times I was very pleased. It is definitely a short course that uses its greens to make it a challenge. Smaller greens that roll fast and have dramatic undulations that can turn a 5 foot putt into a 3 putt in the blink of an eye. Playing on Sunday we paid a little more than I am used to at this course, but they included a lunch and a domestic beer voucher which made it an excellent value for a weekend round. One thing that bugged me was that the range was not open at 7am on a Sunday so I had to spend almost an hour chipping and putting when I expected to hit a bucket. Regardless, I would definitely go back.
Thank you for the review! We're glad you enjoyed your time with us and we apologize for any 3-putts our greens may have tricked you into! We look forward to having you back!
Not Too Long, but Challenging Courses with Relatively Narrow Fairways
Hillsborough has narrow fairways (and some tee box is too close to other holes), and somewhat challenging around greens. It was not a long course, but difficult for me get better scores in par-4's and par-3's. Par-5's are very easy here. I wish they had a faster greens, but I think it is worth it.
We appreciate your review and we're glad you could find the course to be a challenge. We hope to see you back again soon!
Barely worth the money
Facilities are in just Ok to shabby condition. Course is not well maintained. They should not charge what they do

My 3rd tiem back.. Love this place
I cant say enough about this place. For a public course, (for me) its worth the 50 minute drive) I really enjoy this track. The fairways and overall conditions are well cared for, the greens are challenging as can be and its overall a good time and beautiful scenery to calm you after getting slapped with a 3 putt on lots of these greens ! Bring your A game.. and enjoy the course. I recommend a cart, there's some crazy elevation changes on some of these holes. Overall, this course presents a fair challange to any golfer from 5 to 25 hdcp..
Love ths course !
I love this course. It was my first time playing and I've gone back a few times already since. The value is great and it seems like each time I've been, I've been the only one out here. Pace of play is as fast as u want it b/c there was never anyone in front or behind us. Bring your putting came though, because 70% of these greens are on a hillside or slanted and present a real challenge, but that's part of the game ! Good luck. But if you go, you will most likely love this place. well well cared for and the back 9 is more of a challenge after a nice moderate front.
Great course and great value
Our foresome meant to pick a different course on Golfnow but didn't realize we mixed up the names until after the tee time was set. We all loved the course had a great time and glad we mixed up the names! Not being from the New Jersey area and playing a course like that for the value with lunch included it was completely worth it! Will definitely be back when I am back in the area again!
This course is very challenging.
Although this course is not very long, even from their longest tee box "whites", it offers a variety of doglegs that make it tough for any golfer. Course is in great condition.
Very Nice Course
Played this course for the first time yesterday. Staff was very polite from the moment we got there. Course conditions were good for a public course. Pace of play was a little slow only because there was a Foursome of kids two groups ahead of us that really slowed everything down. But overall I really enjoyed this course, a lot of dog legs both left and right, shots that force you to layup on some holes, high tee boxes and low tees boxes to factor in different yardage calculations which was fun. Was able to get a phenomenal price through GolfNow. Definitely will play here again.
Terrible
Super hard and burned out greens and fairways. Way too tight of a course with no rangers anywhere to regulate play. There are no divot mix bottles on the carts (which feel like they are going to fall apart) and the tee boxes are all destroyed. The rest of the facility looks like it was part of Chernobyl. Glad it only cost me $35
I am sorry you had such a bad experience at HCC. It is definitely a tight, old school layout that doesn't fit everyone's game. I'm puzzled about the burnt out greens and fairways comment. Maybe you have confused us with someone else. It has been a particularly hot summer, yet our greens have garnered nothing but praise, with only one fairway showing stress. Divot mix on the carts would be a nice addition. I'm afraid you have lost me with the Chernobyl comment, but thank you for taking the time to comment. I hope your golf experiences, wherever they may be improve.
Challenging course
Love playing this course. Very interesting layout and slopes. Well maintained greens are fast and tricky. Would love to play here again.

no crowds and feel freedom on the top of the mountain.
Great track!
What a place, it's a extremely well kept course. I will definitely return for more rounds here. Not an ounce of fescue anywhere, this is a pleasure to play and difficult enough without the need for tricks. Narrow holes and doglegs will test your accuracy off the tees, with its share of wide open options as well. A well laid out track with amazing views. Bring some bug spray as its that time of year where you may hit a few greens with those annoying gnats, don't let them rush your shots, but keep in mind you'll run into those most every course you play so this has zero effect on my opinion, this place is an A+ and my biggest complaint is that it's not closer to my house ;)
Plus they have a hot bartender, so, what's not to love haha
Don't Waste Your Time
The course is old, tired and short but has nice views. Very easy course that almost plays like a long par 3. The people were pleasant and helpful. It's also a little sketchy driving into the course as there are rundown buildings and a motel on the way in. They charge too much for the quality of the play. Save your money and play Neshanic.
I really like this course.
I have to say it's a nice course and they keep it in nice condition. I've played there about 10 times and was never disappointed. Not extremely challenging but it has it's obstacles. I'll definitely go back and recommend it to friends. Please just get your exterminator to spray some of those sand traps to eliminate those bees. They were definitely a nuisance. Especially along the right side of the fairway on hole 1. There were so many that I had to drag my ball out of there to hit it. You know I didn't add a stroke of course. Thanks.
SLOW, LONG DAY
We played in well over 5 hours. Had to wait on every hole. Fairways and greens were in good shape considering the 2 inches of rain the day before, except 1 green that had standing water. Tee boxes another story, none were flat, had to search for a "good" spot to hit from. If not for the golf now price I would not have played here at all.
GPS Off All Day
Course is in good shape, and has some old school character to it. Small greens rolled true all day. If you spray it off the tee you will have tree issues. Which leads me to a giant issue we had with the course. The tee box would say a hole was 360 yards. The marker would be next to the measurement marker in the ground. My golflogix gps on my verizon phone would say the hole was 50-70 yards shorter consistently. Sometimes the GPS was right. Sometimes the marker was right. So it became too much of a guessing game on tees with where to aim and how far the hole truly was.
greens in very good shape
Have played this course many times . Greens are always tricky but in very good shape
Beautiful course
Course was immaculate. Course is on one big lean. Sand traps could have been better
Beautiful Course
Well worth the drive from Brooklyn to play. Great layout, very friendly people and the 11th hole is awesome. A must play.
