Great Gorge Golf Club - Quarry/Rail Course
About
Great Gorge Golf Club is situated on 500 acres of naturally preserved land, nestled in the Vernon Valley between the Wawayanda and Pochuck Mountain Peaks. Designed by George Fazio in 1970 on behalf of Hugh Hefner for his Great Gorge Playboy Club, the course boasts 3 championship nines: Rail, Lake and Quarry. With four tee box options, the course is manageable for newer golfers yet challenging for lower handicap players, making Great Gorge an ideal venue for all golfers.

An Aging Classic
We played two of the three nines - Quarryside and Railside - which were challenging and visually appealing, which is why you should consider playing the course. However, the "aging classic" reality is that the roads leading up to the course and the paths along it were, to be kind, in disrepair ... so much so that we had to sit up and forward in our cart so that the bumpiness didn't hit us both in our butts and our backs, which is why it's a bit difficult to justify this price point. I'll probably return - it had been years since I've played the course - but don't expect this track to join a regular rotation just because it's a tad pricey for the experience of it: a challenging, visually pleasing course that can be quite painful to get around (because of the ubiquitous bumpiness of the paths and on-site roads).
Course asphalt paths in poor condition
Beautiful course. Great greens. Previous rainy days required path only for carts. Terrible paths in need of extensive repair. On any other day you can drive on the fairways.
Great Gorge
The golf experience was better than I expected. When we entered the property and saw the closed down hotel and the conditions of the parking lot we were not expecting a good course. When we saw the conditions driving range and cart paths we almost asked for a refund. I am glad we stayed for the actual golf course. The fairways, greens and tee boxes were very nice. Greens are very challenging and overall it was a fun course to play.
The worst part of the day was a wedding planned for later in the day. Hef's Hut, the restaurant on the property, was closed the entire day because of the late day wedding. That meant no food or indoor plumbing for our group of 6. Then when approaching our last hole for the day a marshal came out and said we have to hurry up because the wedding would be starting soon they didn't want our playing to interfer with the party.
Total lack of planning. We could have played a different back nine (they have 3) and no one would have been disturbed. You can't shut down indoor plumbing for an entire day because you have a wedding at 5:00 on a Saturday night. Even the staff said the wedding was a mistake and would probably be the last one they do.
My friends and I all agree we would go back to play the couse but we would definitely check on other events happening at the course first
Potential but pace of play ruins it
For the money it is a good deal for the money. If you don't mind 5 1/2 hour rounds it's even better. Course has so much potential but drainage is horrendous. Standing water all over course.
Play three times a week
The course is very nice however the car path are horrendous. Not sure if they are waiting to put money in this course because of the Hotel coming in or they just gave up on the car path.
If you’re not gonna maintain a car path, rip them up and let us drive on gravel. I give this the worst car path of all golf courses I’ve ever played.
Course is well maintained. Pin placements were diabolical. Friendly staff, especially the starter, Mona.
Drive for value
My son, and my friends all played together this Monday. Let me start by saying this is the best staff of any course I play in NJ. They always accommodate the guests and do it with an attitude of gratitude and that’s so appreciated. If you have not played Great Gorge because it’s to far please make the effort the drive is worth it. GG is one of the nicest public courses you will ever play and the vistas are to die for. If I could give this place a 1000 stars I would. MUST PLAY COURSE for your 2025 season.
Work in orogress
Course was fine. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were in nice shape.
Cart paths were deadly. There are a lot of elevation changes on the course and the hills combined with the lack of maintenance of the cart paths is a problem waiting to happen.
There was a wedding scheduled for the day we played so the restaurant and bar was closed to our party. I don’t agree with scheduling a wedding on a weekend during prime golf season when you know you will be closing the facility to people who paid for access to your venue. But worse than closing the restaurant and bar was banning all golfers from using the bathrooms. You should not ban paying guests from using bathrooms for the 5 hours they will be using your property.
Worth the drive
Course is professional grade in every way. Management, starters and restaurant Great Gorge is a must play. I also had my sons friends playing and they are new golfers so for a great rate they played a Premier golf course. Thank you GG amazing effort every time!!!
Disappointed first time experience
Greens are fast & difficult. Good challenge. A couple of blind shots. Beautiful scenic holes over water, through valleys. Golf cart died on hold 12 took over 30 minutes for the course to provide a new cart. Had to walk a bowl and a half and let multiple groups play through. Round took over five hours no apology for someone saying sorry at any point. After the round was completed spoke to the pro shop. No managers were available on a Sunday which I find hard to believe. Car paths was like going on and off road trail.
