Great Gorge Golf Club - Quarry/Rail Course
About
Great Gorge Golf Club is situated on 500 acres of naturally preserved land, nestled in the Vernon Valley between the Wawayanda and Pochuck Mountain Peaks. Designed by George Fazio in 1970 on behalf of Hugh Hefner for his Great Gorge Playboy Club, the course boasts 3 championship nines: Rail, Lake and Quarry. With four tee box options, the course is manageable for newer golfers yet challenging for lower handicap players, making Great Gorge an ideal venue for all golfers.

Quite Fine
As I pulled into the old parking lot, I was a bit disappointed thinking of how much better this place could be if it goes through some renovations. However, as I went up the hill to sign in, I realized that the golf course itself is beautiful and maintained well and the staffing around the course was managed just fine. The starter and the ranger as well as all other employees were all doing their jobs and seem to be quite organized in what they do. Further, I appreciate the promotion rate and would certainly go back there as long as they keep the promotion going. With the promotion, paying around $50(cart included) is very reasonable compare to the good quality of course and the friendly staff. To sum it up, I indeed enjoyed a nice round of golf on a beautiful Friday afternoon there.
Quarry/rail
Course in pretty good shape. Undulating greens make putting tough when in those positions on green. Only complaint is the cart paths, really beat up, towel came unhooked twice, found 2 other golfer's items, beer kept spilling out from can while riding on their paths.
Well kept course
Most greens were hard and many times your shot would roll to the back of the green or off the green. This made your approach shots more challenging.
golf from an old geezer
i liked the course and i played bad, it is a very interesting golf course wich i intend to play many times
Mr. RRD
Very good course and in very good condition.
My only beef is the stones in the bunkers.
Eliminate those and you have a really nice course!
overall Good condition
Overall, the course was in good shape. Fairways, Greens were great. Some areas had the rough too high around the greens. But for the price, it's a good value.
Scenic course with challenging holes...
A good challenge and an exceptionally friendly and professional staff. The food and beverages were plentiful and delicious.
Great conditions
Didn't know what to expect, place looks likes ghost town as you drive in. Played the lakes/quarry courses, conditions were fantastic. Pace of play was a little slow but not terrible. Food was good but a little pricey. Would definitely be back.
Great course
Great course but a tad bit unfair to women. Greens were in great shape as well as the fairways. Staff is always pleasant and helpful.
nice layout
you can tell they need more money the bunkers have rocks that are big not raked out. the grass is not trimmed around bunkers. the rest of the course greens and fairways are in good shape and that is the most important thing. the cart paths are in need of repair badly!!!! GO SLOW ON THEM. I have played there other courses and found cart paths good. but to be fair they had a hard winter.
Course was I great shape!
Golf management is the key here. Keep your tee shots in the fairway. The rough is very unforgiving.
Beautiful views of the mountains and ski slopes in Vernon valley.
Beautiful
One of the best looking courses I've played. I enjoyed the layout and the layout was decent. The only thing that bothered me was the price of the range balls. I'm paying close to $100 to play the course and they have the nerve to charge $10 for 30 range balls! Absolute ripoff. I won't be doing that again but otherwise I plan to go back to the course.
Beautiful scenery and well designed course
Great value and a pleasure to play. Condition of course was very good, quite well maintained.
Good course with a lot of variety.
One of my favorite things about this course is that it is not a cookie cutter course where a lot of the holes look like a previous hole. Only real drawbacks were the sand traps. They were as hard as dirt and several times saw balls bounce in and then bounce out with ease and distance.
Always good
I always go back to Great Gorge.Good value and condition of course is always nice. If it rains hard you may have a problem Lake side but still a great place to play.Only thing I would suggest is for the town to make the owneres demo the awful looking Playboy Club!
Good course but slow play
It was my first time playing this course. The course is well maintained but a little wet in spots. It's challenging but fair.
The pace of play was too slow. It took 5 hours to play the round. Reduced our enjoyment of the course by quite a bit.
Nice course, but round ruined by staff
I always enjoy playing this course. Under rated in my opinion. Conditions were very good as usual. Greens were smooth. Wish it were a few bucks cheaper though.
Round ruined by staff harassment. We teed off at 6:30. A twosome was put off behind us so after a few holes we naturally had to let them play through. From the fifth hole on we were constantly harassed about pace of play. Meanwhile, no one was waiting behind us all day. By the 13th hole we were told to pick up our ball and skip a hole then continue playing. No way we were going to do that so we just kept playing, but it was all we could think/talk about and it didn't exactly help our games. When all was said and done we finished the round in 4 hours and 40 minutes. Factoring in the time for allowing the twosome to pass it was a 4 and a half hour round...EXACTLY WHAT THEY TOLD US BEFORE WE TEED OFF. The group behind us was three holes back. Needless to say we were upset. We paid good money to play this course (not like it was a $30 round) and this unnecessary level of harassment really turned us off from this course.
Would I come back? Probably. But that is because I enjoy the course. Others in my group said maybe not.
Challenging Course
Fun course to play-lots of blind shots and different looking holes. Second time playing would be very beneficial so I will be back. Can be hard to judge distance as your depth perception is off with the mountains and scenery in the background. Yardage markers could be improved and cart paths need to be paved as they are quite bumpy and our bags were bouncing all over the place. Long walk from car lot to clubhouse and they should have a shuttle taking you back and forth to move things along. Staff was polite and helpful. Overall a great challenge at the right price that puts any North Jersey public course to shame.
Such a sweet looking course
So scenic and quiet. Certainly worth the cost and the hour's drive.
