Harkers Hollow Golf Club
About
Nestled in the hills of Scotts Mountain, Harkers Hollow Golf Club was carved from a sloping hillside, giving it a challenging terrain with plenty of elevation changes. Opened in 1929, the golf course has a classic layout designed by Robert White, the first president of the PGA of America. Although it is a seemingly mild 6,551 yards from the back tees, the course plays much longer and harder thanks to the undulating terrain. The layout does offer a few lengthy holes as well as some interesting par 3s. The greens are small and fast with breaks ranging from subtle to dramatic. There is hardly any water but the Lopatcong Creek does run the entire length of the golf course and requires the occasional carry. The par-3 fifth hole is the club's signature. It is particularly notable for its scenery, which is why it has served as the backdrop for many weddings.

Worst course I ever played
Save your money this course is worth 5 dollars for 18 holes with a cart. the green are fantastic but everything else is like playing in a park with no grass.
Dead fairways and good greens
The fairways were in bad shape. Hard to find a green area in some fairways.
Not what I remembered
This was my first time back at Harkers in about 5 years. First the good...got a great rate on a Golf Now and the greens were in decent shape. The rest was disappointing. The fairways were either burned out or not mowed. Conditions from hole to hole were inconsistent. The place doesn't seem to be cared for at all because from what I remembered, it was pretty good. Stopped in for a post round beer, and the bar was not very inviting. I hope the owners are planning on better maintenance because it's a great piece of land.
Poor Conditions
At the very least, grass(weeds & dirt) could have been mowed. It appeared to not have been cut for at least a week. Fairways were dry, full of crabgrass and weeds, and bare in most spots. Only saving grace was the greens. An employee said the course was good now in comparison to how it was. They should shut down until they get their act together
Nice layout, challenging approach and greens
Though the course does need service on some of the starting 9, the layout is always fun and with character. Approach and greens were a challenge, which I like. Greens in great condition. Staff was friendly and the lunch special was a treat.
Value option when Architects blows the budget
The greens were excellent. The view tremendous. The pace of play fast. The price is super reasonable. Even with brownout fairways and the poorly maintained facilities, a good bargain for the hacker like myself or even bogey golfers.
Value, Interesting. Formerly Great
I play 100 or so courses, and 100 is my score.
I can see that this was a once Great place to play.
It was not as bad as some reviews I've read.
Greens were Great, Fairways not sooo, but move the ball 5 inches and get a lie/lye. Mountain based course with influence all over, bump and run to many greens. I can't wait to get my novice brother on this course, perhaps his novice son, and play it often. Real golf course from the 1930's coming back to popularity I would hope. I drive 1 hour plus to visit and will do it anytime. Not PGA, but a great value and beautiful course that can entertain and sharpen one's game. I hope that the owners will continue to upgrade and entice more players. Hidden Gem for the average golfers to support.
Disappointed
Heard years ago this course was very nice. Knew someone who used to be a member. Decided to try it but played on patchy burned out fairways and weeds taking over tee boxes. Greens were in good shape but overall I was disappointed in its condition. I see the potential in this course but for whatever reason it has not been well maintained.
great value, but needs fairway maintenence
Fairways are severely burnt out. Greens are ok. Staff is very nice. Finished 18 in under 3 hours on a Friday afternoon.
Pleasantly surprised
After reading all the negative reviews I expected a dump. Far from that. Steve was a pleasure to deal with. One can see they are doing lots of work on the course mostly on the back nine so far but they are getting there. Rome wasn't built in a day. Greens are FABULOUS !!!!!! second only to my home course Quail Brook. Bit of a ride for my foursome but well worth it. Will definitely be going back soon. Note, to course, please remove the eyesore tennis courts...
the course could be great if they take care of it.
the fairway is really beat up you cannot tell if your on the fairway or out. fairway are dead grass and the bunker had a hard sand.
still needs some work
greens are in good shape, but can't say that about the rest of the course. major issue remains lack of maintenance, burned out fairways, uneven tee boxes. Also, you need to bring your own water as there is no drinking water on the course. They give you a bottle of water- lasts a few holes in the heat. Even the ball washers were dry. Course is OK at special rates but not worth an hr drive. Course was empty on weekday. No interesting holes that you will remember.
Very rude staff
Desk clerk was barely audible and he was rude. Tossed the keys to the cart on the counter. Went to putting green and his sidekick came out. It seemed like he was watching us. We had a 2:30 pm tee time and at 2:15 asked if we could tee off , no one else was around waiting to tee off. He told us he would'nt let us tee off because we had a reduced rate from Golf Now. They seemed mad that we paid less than the usual rate. Definitly not an asset to the golf course. We were thinking of becoming a member but have changed our mind because of his attitude. We are senior citizens who bother no one. Just wanted to play a peaceful round of golf. Ownership should be made aware of the poor performance of its staff and Gol Now should be made aware that the staff seems to resent their reservations.
It's sad to see
The course looks like it used to be great. Amazing layout and good length to it. But.... The course today has the quality of a cow pasture. First, in most cases, you can't tell the fairway from the rough. Second, greens were slow as anything. You could not get a good lie anywhere, even on the tee boxes. Bunkers were terrible, and everything was overgrown. It made the course look ugly. All this course needs is some tlc. It has the potential to be a great track. Plus 78 bucks for two people is outrageous.
I think I expected more..
I was told good things bout Harker's Hollow but overall, I can only say course is average. They say their greens roll at 11 on stimpmeter but that's very inaccurate. Maybe 8 or a 9 on some greens..also, bunkers are poor. Fairways and rough weren't really cut. Tons of clover, dandelions, and other weeds. It just seems they don't do much course maintenance.
Good course for practicing accuracy
Course is not long and honestly, a lot of the holes look the same which is a good thing! Front 9 has generous fairways. Back 9 are a little tighter fairway so use a wood or iron off tee; not a driver.
Sand traps need dressing.
Rough is weedy and rough so it's tough.
Ladies tee's are really absent - mostly in the fairway!
Country Club of the Post-Apocalypse
Playing this course reminds me of what golf would look like after the apocalypse. Nice layout, and as you scan the course, you'll see down trees from Hurricane Sandy (never removed), overgrown flower beds, and beat up tee boxes.....weeds in the fairways, unevenly cut fairways, and greens that roll around 7-8 on the stimp meter. Fairways are rock hard.
We played winter rules in June. We had the course to ourselves on a weekday afternoon in the 80* temperature range. Golf is golf, and for $18 to ride and play 18....not a terrible deal. Play here, and help the management get the revenue to bring this course back to life. A shame to see such a nice layout suffer from neglect.
Course needs upkeep
We were dismayed at the condition. The grass - all over - was exceptionally long. The grass on the greens had seed heads on them. The fairways felt very narrow since the mowing was limited to a center stripe. This could be an interesting course if maintained properly but... This would be a good course if you have someone who has never been on a course before and wants a low pressure outing.
Course is fun to play.
Challenging holes best to play with someone so you dont lose your ball after hitting it. Rough is thick but course is in pretty good shape.
