Harkers Hollow Golf Club
About
Nestled in the hills of Scotts Mountain, Harkers Hollow Golf Club was carved from a sloping hillside, giving it a challenging terrain with plenty of elevation changes. Opened in 1929, the golf course has a classic layout designed by Robert White, the first president of the PGA of America. Although it is a seemingly mild 6,551 yards from the back tees, the course plays much longer and harder thanks to the undulating terrain. The layout does offer a few lengthy holes as well as some interesting par 3s. The greens are small and fast with breaks ranging from subtle to dramatic. There is hardly any water but the Lopatcong Creek does run the entire length of the golf course and requires the occasional carry. The par-3 fifth hole is the club's signature. It is particularly notable for its scenery, which is why it has served as the backdrop for many weddings.

not worth it
The first three things I noticed when I arrived at the first tee
1. The course was in bad shape. Tee boxes were torn up/dead and the fairways were just weeds cut really low
2. The bunkers all had grass and weeds growing through them.
3. nobody was really there. Which tells me that this course is not good enough for anyone else either.
the greens were okay only because no one plays there (or hits the greens). Although I paid 15 dollars through golf now, it still wasn't worth it. spend the 25-35 somewhere else and actually enjoy yourself.
Don't waste your money
I played this course when it was private. It was in great shape. This time I couldn't believe the conditions. Greens were OK but fairways were burning out and being overgrown with crabgrass. Traps were very poor and being infested with crabgrass. Wait for good reviews before playing this course !!
Don't recommend
Bunkers are overgrown, course is in bad condition. Don't waste your time with this course.
Harkers Hollow Review
Harkers used to be a really nice private course but went public. Only issues I have: they don't water enough (at all?) during dry seasons so the greens and fairways get really burnt out and they let the greens grow longer making them really slow. Great value though, would not pay more than $40 to play there. Need to play here early and late in the season, Playing in July/August you run the risk of no grass in the fairways. Oh, and they stopped taking care of the traps, looks like they're letting them grow in with grass.
Old tradition golf course
The course lay out is excellent, but it seems like there is no superintendence. The fairways are worse than any golf courses in this world, nobody taking care of the fairways. There are no sands in any of the bunkers, but all the bunkers are strategic place. The sad true about this golf course is simply no one taking care of it.
Sleepy Hollow
Great beginner course for the not so seasoned amateur. Fairways are a bit rough, but when you don't hit the fairway often it doesn't matter much anyway. Friendly staff, and met a legendary older gentleman named Mick. Would play this course again.
needs work
Nice layout greens were in very good condition..fairways need work and the rough must have been set up by the USGA for the US Open..the guy was "mowing" it as we played but was really just knocking it down
Possibly the worst course I have ever played...
Very good potential, some holes with great views, but they need better management. Greens were just ok, lots of brown spots and a lot of pins were filled with disgusting green murky water..
Worst fairways I have ever seen. There was more dirt than grass on the fairways and was horrible to play.
It was also the first time I have ever seen groundskeepers using turkey basters to clear water off a tee box. I don't think they know what they're doing. I would not recommend this course to anyone.
Pace of play
Went out by myself and finished the round in under 2 hours on a Friday afternoon.
Poorly maintained course with great potential
This course has a beautiful layout and a great tradition, but I guess economic conditions in the area have made it difficult to provide the necessary maintenance. The bunkers were more like waste areas, and the fairways had lots of weeds and brown areas. I wish the owners would find a way to invest in fixing up the course and promoting it's potential beauty.
Harker's Hollow Golf Course
Harker's Hollow Golf Course is a moderately difficult golf course in Phillipsburg, NJ. Upon arriving, the staff was very friendly and provided us with a scorecard and a cart. When we went out onto the course, I noticed that the fairways are not well kept at all. The bunkers have weeds growing in them and there's not that much sand. The greens are pretty well kept, on most holes. For $25, it's worth playing if you just want to play. If you want to play on a more well-kept course, spend the extra money and play at a different course.
Best Value Going
I have played Harker's before and I will play it again - as much as possible. If you're a course snob this place probably isn't for you. But for the average to intermediate golfer, this place can't be beat - and for beginners (or trying to teach one) this is it. Hands down you can't beat $30 for 18 holes with a cart. I paid triple the weekend before and quite honestly - not sure why - it was the same driving distance. Sure - the fairways are a little rough here and the bunkers are not in good shape, but the greens are fantastic. The staff couldn't be nicer and the $9.00 lunch deal (any food item with a free 1/2 pitcher of beer) means you played 18 holes with a cart (with some spectacular views), excellent food and beer for $39 bucks. You tell me where to find better value than that - I am all ears. Oh - not to mention they give you a "Bounce Back" coupon that allows you 2 for 1 greens fees if you come back within 6 days. Sure - this caters to the more local crowd but because I played on Sunday I could use it the following Saturday - so another round with a friend for $15. Yep - 5 stars folks.
The views at the higher points are stunning and 18 back to the clubhouse is great. I am glad this place exists and I hope it stays true to itself - make the improvements necessary but don't jack the rates because you "can".
Jokingly - my only complaint is they got away from the old logo on the shirts - I like my 1939 and swinging stick figure short! I forgive you! Ha.
Looking forward to heading back soon!
Good
Well played. Fairways in tough shape. Greens were perfect
May Be Worth a Visit
It had been at least 15 years since I played this course. The weather was cool for the end of April. Like many other courses it is slow to recover after a cold winter. The fairways were absolutely awful, and apparently that is not a change from last year. It is best to hit the ball into the rough (not the trees) for a good lie.The bunkers look as if they hadn't been touched in years. It may be that they are being allowed to grow into grass bunkers. The greens were in excellent shape, and some proved to be very difficult. However, not every course is a garden, and the views surrounding the course are wonderful. .I enjoyed playing there. Keep reminding yourself that the courses in Old Tom Morris' day weren't the groomed lawns that we like to see today.
Great value.
I learned the game at Harker's as a high school student more than 40 years ago. After a harker's fell into disrepair, I was surpised to hear that it went semi-private. I decided to try it out last year. Greens were ok, but the fairways were not doing well (grubb damage).
I tried it again yesgerday and am I happy that I did!!! The greens are a great and the fairways are almost back to their original luster of 40 years ago! This is a great course with varied elevations, a few bunkers and some water hazards to add a little challenge to the mix. In short, this course is a tremendous value and I would highly recommend it for a beginner or intermediate golfer. It will not be challenging to the more experienced golfer.
Can't Wait To Play Again !!!
Challenging course, hard to read the greens. Wonderful views and can't wait to play again !!! Great course.
Set expectations correctly
What the reviews say is true: greens are in super condition and fairways are mostly pretty poor. Fairways are better on the back than front though. Yes, in some cases, fairways are just dirt in ALOT of area so you'll have to move your ball a few feet to get a fair lie. This place does have a fun layout though and nice views. It does kind of have a feel that you are sneaking onto a defunct course which was ravaged by Sandy a few years ago....down trees, torn fences, weeds, low maintained, etc. Be realistic though, it's a great value if you get a Hot Deal rate on GolfNow. If you can play 18 with a cart for under $20, I don't see how you can think it's a bad overall experience in my opinion, regardless of the condition of some fairways. Have played a few times with groups and as a single. Always have had the whole course to self so pace has always been the best!
good value
greens in good condition, fairways sparse in some areas, rough was a challenge
greens are excellent
Course is close and good for me too practice on. The greens are in beautiful shape. However the fairways are a mess. Also bring your GPS because it's not well marked
