Sunset Valley Golf Course
About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Worth the rating
My son and I have played over 70 of NJ's public courses and with only 5 of the top 40 left on our list (NJ Monthly Magazine from 2013) we needed to play this one. (BTW, playing Berkshire Valley tomorrow rated 15th) Well, Sunset Valley is rated 24th and worth that rating. Friendly and informative staff. Excellent condition. Couldn't find any grab grass or weeds really anywhere. If you missed the fairway you could find your ball easily. Grass cut to "playable" length in the rough. Greens could have been just a bit faster and I expected this for the rating. Nonetheless, worth every penny.
first time
found the staff friendly and helpful we had a great time pace was great never waited at tee boxes would play here again
Got Five and One Half Hours
This is a very good course in good summer condition with little if any on course ranger management. No way it should take five and half hours to complete a round of golf short of an outing.
Either they overloaded the course with players OR they simply wont manage play. Maybe you can play during the week but weekends are a joke.
Great day out
Love it. Will come back and try not to spend so much time in the trees
Great course
Great course, great value. Not quite at an exceptional level but at a great level of 4 stars. Have to be fair to the superior courses out there.
Maintenance was great, greens in top shape, and layout of the course was good. Lots of hills and elevation changes so its a great workout if you walk. Good pro shop and restaurant, fair prices. and good looking cart hoes.
Great county course
This is a public county course so yes it can be slow if you tee off at the wrong time weekends early before 730 is best. The staff is great they are very accommodating but i would imagine if your a snob or rude you will get that back. Bugs the course has alot of water ponds, streams and is in a wooded area so bring bug spray if your a golfer you should have it in your bag. The course condition its a county course not a country club that being said usually in decent shape. The course it self greens are very tough pay attention to pin positions stay below the hole not very long but a good test the layout is great not many better public county courses out there in north NJ.I play this course 3 times a month min great golf course
Never Again
I had the misfortune of playing this course yesterday and got bitten by a thousand mosquitoes and bugs . It seems that the water bodies are not treated properly and there is stagnant water everywhere. I developed a fever today probably from all the bites yesterday .
The staff is arrogant and not at all friendly. They collect $18.00 for a cart and wants you to ride with someone you don't know . Never experienced this any other courses in the US that i played unless you want to do it . And the way of saying it by the starter is as if he is doing you a favour allowing to play after collecting money. My first 2 holes was a disaster trying to recover from this arrogance. NEVER AGAIN on this course and i recommend to stay away unless you have no other option.
very ernjoyable
Everything was fine. Great layout. The starter was very helpful in getting us out.
SLOWWWWWWW
On a Monday, took us 2:45 to play front nine.....unreal. Course is in typical muni shape. Won't play here often because of pace of play. They were awesome and gave me a refund for the back 9!
Rude Staff Ruined Round
I had not played here in a couple of years as past experience was not good. Sorry to say, nothing has changed. Outside of food and cart services, everyone on staff was rude and condescending. Starter and Ranger extremely obnoxious! My buddy's first time playing there and he was appalled. People we played with also got extremely upset with the staff. Guess what? WE ARE CUSTOMERS AND WILL NOT RETURN!!!
Conditions were very disappointing
The greens were recently airated and in very poor condition. The fairways were in average condition at best. Any ball slightly off the fairway was a disaster with no first cut.
Beautiful but challenging golf course
Have played here couple of times and this course never fails to bring out the best (or worst) of my game.
Very nice layout with few challenging holes. The uphill and downhill greens coupled with some tight pin placements makes it somewhat challenging.
The greens are undulated but fair ( please note last week the greens were aerated) . It is important to stay on the fairways as the roughs can be a little unforgiving.
Overall a solid course to play and challenges you every time you play there. Would be my go to course.
Really... Aeration at the end of august
Greens were horrible and bumpy the balls while putting were bouncing every which way... nice course... not worth the 61 for the way those greens played.. unless i missed it there should have been some sort of warning the greens were aerated... pace of play was also slow.. it was a nice looking course.. just wish the greens were not aerated and pace of play was faster ... id like to give this course another try but im not to sure
Course Condition not great
Played this course two weeks ago and it was in pretty good shape. Played yesterday and the greens had recently been aerated, with no information regarding that on Golfnow which was disappointing. I realize all courses must aerate, but they should also let people know before booking. It has been really dry so it is understandable that a lot of the rough and fairways are burnt out. Having played the course in good conditions I would go back, but I wouldn't advise playing there in the next week or two.
Rough provides the challenge
Fun and challenging course with no houses surrounding it. The rough is not overly long but the ball does sink down into it. The rough is what makes this course challenging. It also slows down the pace of play because it's difficult to find the ball even though you know exactly where it is. Not a knock on the course because courses that have challenging rough also have difficulty in finding stray balls. Also, the course is out in front of you with no blind shots. The finishing holes are very challenging but very fair. Lots of people walking but in the heat and humidity of the summer, this would be very physically challenging.
Good and bad
I played twice in one week, both times the grass on the roughs were a bit high, not easy to find your ball.
The second time we were paired with a very old man,who played very slow. On the back nine he was walking .It slowed us down to much. Could not play like that.
Great Bang for your Buck in North Jersey
I was looking to get in afternoon 18 in was beyond surprised by this hidden gem. Hidden away behind a residential neighborhood surrounded by picturesque hills that blocked out the entire afternoon's sun. (which was 100% needed since it was in the mid 80's). I am 100% playing this course again.
Warning!!!
Played as a group of 14 today. $67 seemed way too much for most of the greens being in such a poor condition. But biggest issue was a disrespectful ranger. We started at 1pm and a group in fron started at 12:30. this young punk ranger guy came to us on 6th green and `told us to close the gap with the group in front of us since there's a hole open. I tried to explain that they went out 30 minutes earlier and group behind us were a hole behind, he didn't give me a chance to talk. He said "I'm gonna stop you right there. It's your responsibility to close the gap with a group in front". He said that in very rude tone like a gangster trying to bully I said O.K. and didn't argue cuz didn't want it to be a fist fight and sure didn't want him to ruin my game any more than he already did. I went to proshop after finishing 9 hole in under 2 hours and seriously complained. I belong to 2 different group of 16 golfers each that play every week. I'm not coming back here. My groups will not come back here. And I will advise anyone even considering this place not to come here. I'm sure the words will spread much farther. Unless you get some kinda kick out of paying your money to be bullied, DON'T play at Sunset Valley!!!!
Monday morning ladies league very slow
Ranger told us it's like this every Monday. It was cart path only which also slowed play down. Course played tough due to the wetness and thick rough.
Felt like the sun was setting
1st, the staff was extremely helpful and a pleasure to deal with. The course was in great shape and the greens very consistent. The only negative was the pace of play. If a golfer has trouble walking, they should be required to take a cart.
